From "This Boy Is Our Last Hope" by Sophia van Gameren:

"Although Andrew recognizes that he and Darth Vadar share similarities - "˜I'm like Vadar in the last five minutes of Jedi' (BtVS, season seven) "“ their redemptive journeys differ greatly."

What did Whedon mean by allowing Andrew to say those words?

well as he thought he was about to die and vader only found true redemption before his death....its along those lines
Who knows what Joss is thinking, LOL!?! I can only guess that Andrew means that he once walked on the dark side, but has since turned around and gone back to the good side. Iirc, Darth Vader joined his son and daughter in celebrating the Rebel victory over the Empire in Return of the Jedi.

That's the way I always took it.

I think it was there because Andrew liked to aggrandise his role in events...

I agree that he did that a bit but I mostly disagree that he said that particular statement for that. season 7 andrew was all about redemption even if he did get a bit carried away. :)
I think it's a combination of most if not all of the above; I don't think it carries any kind of super-significance.

Well, I'm sure it was partly for the comedy effect, and partly because Andrew related most to fictional characters.

i think its cool putting star wars quotes into buffy, and andrew is the perfect vessle for it. as a huge star wars fan myself it was great having my two fave things being brought together.....sweet star wars van dude.....bravo bravo.....

Andrew often used inappropriate comments from old movies/tv that nobody ever understood. I always just took it as something that was swirling around in his braing, but did not make any sense to us!

And also, it could just be the eternal mystery that is Joss Whedon.

Andrew is a good charicture for us nerds....star wars etc....it kind of makes you realise how dorky you are if you actualy understand what he is going on about......i totaly love the van....how cool would that look in your drive way....see told you?

Thanks, well im the biggest one in know......and going by high school......so much worthless knowlage in this head......unless star wars is usefull getting a job....." so can you tell me what planets are featured in episode 3?" some how dont think you get those in a interview.....unless its ILM? ( industrial light and magic....movie makers) .....see????
