I was watching a documentary about Greek Mythology and found it interesting there are a number of similarities between Heracles and Angel.

In the myth Heracles is the child of Zeus and a mortal, Zeus cheats on his wife with. His wife Hera isn't happy about this and keeps trying to kill him as a form of revenge on her husband.

Where the similarities start is Heracles is approached by nymphs and given the option to continue to live his life doing nothing, or a hard but glorious life.

Kinda similar to the option Whistler give Angel (except Angels "easy" life is eating rats and stuff)

Heracles, same as Angel chooses the hero path, and he falls in love with a women and has children, Hera then induces a fit of madness and he kills his children.
Once the madness is cured, he sets out on a mission to redeem what he's done and goes on to be one of the greatest heroes in Greek mythology.
When he is eventually killed, he is made immortal and becomes a God.

Thought it was interesting with Angel finding happiness with Buffy, then goes evil, gets cured then moves onto his fight for redemption and similarly once he's done enough there is a reward at the end of that redemption.

I think there is a lot of nods to traditional mythology visible in the Buffyverse.

I've always associated Angel with Oisàn and the Tàr na nà“g legend, which is basically his life with Darla.

I see Angel as Prometheus who stole fire from the gods and gave it to men. For this he was punished to suffer for eternity (the curse of Angel). In some stories, Prometheus is freed at last by the hero Heracles (Hercules). Prometheus is known for his intelligence and as a champion of mankind.
