Angel and Buffy: The Age Difference?

So you think that low about them? How intersting.

They both new that he is older then her. But what can I say? That's love. It doesn't ask how old are you or is it right time for her to come in, she just does.

(I assume that this was meant for me, if not, feel free to ignore this)

I'm not sure where you get the impression that I think that "falling under the charms...etc" is a low opinion. Vivian Leigh fell under the charms of Clark Gable in "Gone With The Wind." Maureen O'Hara fell under the charms of John Wayne in "The Quiet Man." Those are considered two of the greatest love stories in movie history. I was in no way trying to belittle what the two felt for each other or cast any doubts on the fact that they both felt certain, at that moment, that what they were doing was right. (The next morning was a different story, but not really a part of my consideration here)

Okay, here's one thing that hasn't been discussed , and I do think that it has a certain amount of bearing here. In defense of Angel (I can't believe that those four words actually came from me. I'm probably being haunted by the spirit of Miss K) Liam came from a time and a society where it was both perfectly acceptable and quite common for a man of 25, or even older, to marry a teenaged girl, even as young as 15 or 16, so he really saw nothing wrong with what they were doing as far as any age concern was involved. Sure, you can say "that was then and this was now," but Angel has never seemed to concern himself with the laws of mankind, preferring to do what he felt was "right," and to hell with laws, lawyers, and police. He depends on his upbringing as a mortal to shape a lot of his judgment. The "jail bait" issue almost certainly meant little or nothing to him, while the issue of being Buffy's first lover most certainly did. Deflowering virgins, preferably by force and as painfully as possible, was something that Angelus would do, therefore Angel was reluctant, which I find perfectly understandable.

Ok, so I can't karma you again, well at the moment anyway. But I think you bring up some good points here, points I hadn't thought of before. She'd be proud of you 😉

I think Gone With The Wind can't be compared with BtVS, well not in my book. Ok there was charm, and passion, that's good, but I hate how someone see Angel like Roman Polanski who raped 13 year old girl.

I don't see how Mr Polanski slithered into the conversation, but the final scene in "Gone With The Wind" would work out fine. Just imagine Scarlett pleading with Rhett. "Oh, please, Rhett, please don't fo. I love you, I really love you..." and then Rhett utters those immortal words, "No, you don't. But thanks for saying it." (Okay, that was Spike, not Angel, but the scene would be a classic.)

Buffy loved Angel at that point in her life, as much as he loved her. No one could possibly doubt that. They were in love, and it was wonderful and glorious, and tragically doomed from the start. That's the way Joss wrote it, and that's the way that the actors played it. They both loved the way Poe described it, "with a love that was more than love," and the time came when even they realized that they simply could not be together. So they moved on with their lives, exactly the way people are almost always meant to do. That in no way detracts from what they had, but if they had tried to hang onto it, it would have wound up destroying one or both of them.

That in no way rules out the possibility that Buffy and Angel might one day be together, and very happy about it, despite Joss' efforts to keep them apart. But if they ever truly are, then it will be a totally different relationship than anything that Bangel ever was. Call it Angffy for want of a better name, but it will be something totally different that the schoolgirl infatuation that was Bangel.

I do totally agree that it will not be the same Bangel. For which I am very thankful!
See, that is the difference with you and me. For you they moved on. For me, they never will. And that is the end of the story. Maybe you are right and I'm wrong, but I really don't care. I'll keep on beliving no matter what. I think I'm too young to stop and look all the facts. For me, faith is the most important thing, and that faith keeps Buffy and Angel together in my mind.

Do you not think that to some extent they HAVE to have moved on? Think about everything they have been through? They are simply not the same people they were in season two so they're relationship can't be the same.

Don't get me wrong, you know I'm with you on them making it and finding each other, but if they were to just go back to being highschool Buffy and nonChampion Angel I don't think I'd like it.

Are you telling me to get the "if" out of there
No, I do like everything that happened. I just don't belive it's over. I enjoyed season 1 so much, i just watched episode Angel yesterday, and it was nice to see the begining. I am a big fan of season 2, but I suport him when he left in season 3. That was one of the best moves. I'm glad he stayed in L.A for 5 years. I loved that simple crossovers that told us Bangel is not over. I do sometimes miss High School Buffy, but I'm glad she is better and bigger person now, and I do like champion Angel. I just meant some people see that their love is over. What's done it's done. But I saw that break up.. well like a little break up. Like he is going on holiday, for one summer, and then he is going to come back. I'm so greatful for the last episode, but now in season 8, in any form - movie, comic or show - I would like to see another Bangel romance. I know it's not over, because there is so much to be told.

^ I totally agree!!!
i expressed that before...it would be inappropriate if Angel was some sort of man who wanted to chase down a girl and make her fall for him...it just happened...it was destiny,fate...i don't know how to call this!Sometimes love chooses you,you don't choose whom to love...i know Buffy didn't know anything about Angel...but these things also happen in life...you fall in love because you can see the person's heart and nothing can change that...not even a dark past...

They certainly grew up,so many things have hapenned in their lives that changed them both...but still love isn't sth that changes...i believe that one day(maybe just in my mind!) they will end up together...because when they are,i can see true happiness, they can barely hold their hands from each other...they look at each other as soulmates...so no matter how many years pass angel and buffy share sth memorable and eternal

During all of the time that Angel and Buffy were together during the first three seasons of Buffy and in just about every crossover, I saw a lot more tears than laughter. That is why I say that, if, and that's a very big if in my opinion, Buffy and Angel do eventually end up together, it will, or at least should, be a totally new and different relationship, based on something with a lot less angst and a lot more fun. If Angel can ever give Buffy that, then I will be the first one to wholeheartedly support the relationship. But if all that they have in a shared future is more of what they had in Sunnydale, then I will never accept it.

Pretty much same here. Apart from you know, less 'IF' ;)

I agree, they need to left that drama behind them.
I've tried to pretty much avoid this topic but I had an interesting thought the other day while sitting around at work. It's important to remember that when 'Buffy' was first beginning, they had no idea that they would be making 'Angel' the show. So when they first introduced Angel I don't think he was supposed to be 25 or older. He was probably supposed to be around high school age, 19 or 20 at the most.

It wasn't until after Angel the show started that they 'aged' Angel up into his mid- to late twenties so he could deal with the maturity of the shows content. Same thing happens to Cordelia, 16 when Buffy starts, by the time of Angel S4 she's what... 33? Also with Wesley who also ages from well mannered early 20's to rough and tumble late 20's early 30's over the course of 4 years.

So I don't think they originally intended Angel to be so much older then Buffy at the time. In fact when I first watched it it'd didn't bug me at all, it was only later after I watched all of the Angel series then came BACK and watched Buffy S3 again that I was definitely a little weirded out.

So that's something to think about eh.

PrincessBuffy and Eleftheria - don't you see how in order for there to be the happy ending that we want, they HAVE to have changed, their love has to be different to what it was.

I think love is something that changes. It's something that has to change in order for people to stay together for long periods of time/forever. If Buffy and Angel are going to be happy together when they do eventually find each other again then they have to use the experience they have gained individually in order to be to together and make it work. If they just go back to how they were they will not be happy together, pretty much because they will both GO BACK to something and they need to move forward.

I've been with my partner for five years. The love we had when we fifteen (as much as I look back on it with so much love and fondness) is nothing like the love we have now. In order to have stayed together for this long we HAD to change, our love had to mature and grow, just like Buffy and Angel's HAS and MUST continue to do.

That's the Bangel I see happening anyway. 🙂

Personally I dont think their age difference matters. Especially now. She has lived a 100 lives in her short time being a person so really I think they are pretty even. Now I will say when they first met one might raise an eye brow or two but who cares, they were deeply in love and his mentality was pretty immaturish at the time. I would say for the most part they were on the same playing field in terms of relationships that are truly innocent in nature.

oh Flannen don't misunderstand me...i didn't say that they don't need to change and stay like they were in season 3...i am just saying there is love...because IMO they are soulmates...they have certainly grown up!Buffy both in age and character...well Angel is not supposed to get any older 😛...but he has had a great evolution as a character...the oly thing i say is not gonna change are the feelings between them...i would love to see them together again...and i am sure that their love will become stronger and more mature if they both move on to something new and better(i mean move on together...🙂 )

^Sorry, that was totally me misunderstanding there! 🙂 I do agree, obviously, that the love has remained the same in the sense that it is still, and always will be, there.

I was thinking a little more about this and I realized that really until this topic was brought up I never even thought about their age difference. I wonder if that means I am just not very observant?

I doubt it. 😀 I've been watching for years and I never noticed 'til now. A lot of us don't really consider the age difference because the show is through Buffy's eyes and she never really considers the age problem.

As several other people have said, I don't really care about the age difference as much as Buff's age when they began dating. The age difference is bad enough; But the fact that Buffy was 16 when they officially started dating? Yikes. 🙂

She was the slayer for how many years? One and a half. I don't believe that she could've "lived a hundred years" in that short time frame. They were deeply in love when they first saw each other? No offense, but I can't really see that. Angel had killed, abused, raped, and tortured people before. I don't think that he was immature. He had done a LOT more than Buffy could possibly ever imagine. As for innocent relationships... well, I've never actually understood their relationship. It always seemed unreal to me, and not in a good way... 😀 But anyway, there's really no way to end this debate. In the end, it's all a matter of opinion. 🙂

So, a Spuffster has a problem with Bangels age difference, lmao, what a surprise. Spuffies are too funny.
I'm not sure if I've replied in this thread or not but I'm going to again since I don't remember 😀

Buffy was way more mature for her age, being the Slayer and all. Besides that, Angel is not a pedophile AT ALL. He never had any intention of having sex with her or dating her or anything of the kind. His first and main intention was to help her. But he fell in love with her somewhere down the road and SHE fell in love with him as well.

Pedophiles are just creeps who prey on little children and Angel is anything but someone like that.

The age dif never bothered me, mainly because its hard to compare a vamp to human morals.
In RL i would be a bit shocked at a 27yo dating a 16yo though.
I dont care about Buffy being a minor either(is she?), where i'm from a 16yo can move out and start a family if they want, dunno what it is in America though. So i see it as, Buffys 16, she can do what she wants.
