Angel and Daylight?

I am just starting to watch the Angel series (I started a little backwards with season 5 first..) and Im very confused...

How is it that Angel can walk around the city in broad day light? I mean, so far, (Im up to episode 5 of season 1) he hasnt rushed in nearly on fire once.

Are you just supposed to go along with it for storyline purposes or am I making too much of this?

Sewer systems? That's the explaination they give for when Angel goes out during the day. Also, indirect sunlight doesn't cause combustion. The only ep I thought they messed up on was that one with the creepy guy who went after the kids. That was a bit too direct for my liking.

You mean the fantastic 'In the Dark' with Spike.

The one that ends with Angel chasing the 'creepy guy' off the end of the peer when he is wearing the Ring of Amara, and Angel starts to burn until he is in the water?

I have no issue with the writers consistency with sunlight.

That's the one. It wasn't that moment that was the problem. It was under the pier that annoyed me. It had HOLES in it! That's direct sunlight! But it was only a minor irk.

I've been under plenty of piers(not answering why here!!), the small holes don't make that much of a problem UNLESS the sun is directly over head.

It is quite unlikely there would be any holes large enough for sunlight to get through.

well what about vampire invitation - are we also to assume that invites have already happened? Like when he was going after the worm-like demon who stole bodies in Episode 2 - he totally just entered into apartment w/o an invite.

Don't need an invite to enter a demon's home, only humans.

I can't remember Angel ever walking around in direct sunlight in season 5. I do remember that he drove around in cars that didn't have the blocked-out windows, but that's because Wolfram & Hart installed the special glass to keep direct sunlight from getting through.

I think the older a vampire gets the tougher they become and can handle alot of things young vampires cant. Spike for example was caught in sunlight for a good few seconds sometimes and just started to smoke, before escaping. Then other vampires(in who are you? and Holtz daughter) burst into flames pretty much as soon as they touched direct sunlight. So i assume older vampires can handle sunlight a bit better?

Age-related sunlight resistance would be neato. I wish we could have explored that a bit with The Master and Kakistos (or maybe with Dracula).

When the suns rays hit the cm gap, light hast to follow a straight line. This means the effective span would probably be captured in the gap itself as the gap between planks is generally smaller than the thickness of said plank for safety reasons.

The Vampire would be safe.

Now these rays would go straight down through the small gaps ONLY if the Sun was at 0 degrees based on the horizon being 90 degrees.

These would pose a threat to the Vamps underneath IF there wasn't a super structure of beams and metal holdings forming the base of the Pier.

Even at 1+/- degrees it wouldn't be impossible to expect the suns rays to get through.

Now, from the episode we get the impression that the sun is not at its greatest above the pier SO Fig c) is not an issue AND the fact there is a shadow under the pier allows us to deduce that the Sun isn't at 30/90 degrees as it too would find a way directly underneath as the pier is only a maximum of 10 metres across.

I do think that sometimes they expand the time a certain Vamp can be exposed to Sunlight (only a couple of seconds or whatever though, not like going sunbathing on the beach!) for plot-line purposes, but I can't remember any times that he walks around in direct sunlight.

As much as I like Al's explanation (and magnificant diagrams 😉 ), I'd just like to throw in that Angel was wet in the daylight scene of In the Dark. And we kinda see that vampire combustion can by put out just like any normal fire, so maybe the dampness added to the flame resistance?

Who knows, maybe vampires could come out in daylight, but they'd have to spend all day in the pool.

While I doubt that being damp/wet but not immersed in water will prevent him from sparking up completely (he'd probably start to smolder and then the water would evaporate) it would probably give him more time in sunlight.

However, as we saw, the sea put the fire out. So he could go scuba diving, as long as none of his limbs were exposed 😛

My explanation and diagrams make perfect sense for dry vamps.

I think to test this we need to have Spike and Angel get all wet in white t-shirts (to retain water better than naked flesh) and have them duke it out!
