Up to "Checkpoint" I can see nothing that Spike is doing that Angel would not also have done.
I'm pretty sure Angel would gladly protect Dawn and Joyce from Glory just as Spike did...and Angel would not ask for cash in return! He probably would have come up with the idea before Buffster did.
Angel would ask for nothing in return, while Spike would want cash, beer, buffalo wings...

From what I can gather, it seems this thing that will become "Spuffy" is more of a love/hate relationship as opposed to a true love deal with Angel.

But SPIKE did all of this without a soul. Angelus would have been creative USING Harmony most likely and still killed and fed had he been chipped, Buffy would never have been with Angelus even if it was only sexual.

Yeah cuz he had no choice!! Spike chose to fight good because he could not hurt Humans only Demons, it was cuz he could do nothing else!

And it is really unfair to say that Buffy would have not been with Angelus, Cuz we can't know that. Buffy still loved Angel after he turned back to Angelus, it like spike says Love isn't Brains it's blood, and Buffy is Angels True love!

are you serious? Buffy would NEVER have been with Angelus, re-watch season 2, she GOT they weren't the same and even if she was inlove with Angel she'd NEVER have done that with him. Like I said Spike COULD have fed, did you not watch CRUSH he chose not to kill - or feed off dead people because of his emotions for Buffy

Spike had a choice. He wasn't forced to work for the good guys. He could have left Sunnydale at any point in time to try and get his chip out.

And do you really think that Buffy and Angelus would have gotten together? Buffy only loved Angel with a soul. She never loved Angelus.

I agree that Spike didn't have a choice.

Love/Hate? I think it was pure lust and need.

I'm not sure if Angel would have protected joyce and dawn for buffy. I think he'd be more likely to try and hunt down glory himself and be the hero.

Also I've always thought that perhaps Angel wouldnt help joyce because I feel she was the reason Angel left sunnydale. If you remeber she went to Angel and got him to break up with buffy and convined him to leave in season 3! lol.

Trying to figure out these two guys is what brought me to the Buffy Boards in the first place. It seems to me like Angelus was always a more evil repulsive vamp than Spike ever was. Spike seemed to appreciate human personalities, human civilization more than Angelus. He acknowledged the human condition, the existence of love. He thought humans were pathetic, but he actually bothered to observe, almost admire some of them in his own detached way. And he seemed insecure, frustrated, even as an unbridled vamp. It's like the personality of the original person begins to warp, shape what the vamp will eventually be...Liam was scummy, more pathetic than sensitive William. Angelus was all id, all the time"”sorta like Liam, I guess.

To me Angelus always seemed to enjoy the kill much more than Spike. He prolonged it, tortured and drove his victims insane and got pleasure out of it. It was almost poetic and artistic to him.

When Spike killed it was more "get it done"....he wasn't into the torture...it was more just killing because of his vampire instinct.

I don't think Angelus would have helped Buffy at all....he was much too in love with tormenting and torturing and killing. I do think that if Angelus had acted like Spike did and helped her and stopped killing people then Buffy could have fallen in love with him the way she did with Spike....but Angelus was much too brutal for that.
