Question Angel/Buffy first Meeting in season 1

Angel:Let's just say I am a friend
Buffy:I'm looking myself for my friends
Angel I didn't say that I'm your friend!

What did he meant with this sentence?

Was a little bit confused ! What do you think.
I think that he had a soul but anyway he was a vampire and so he had to be carefull with the slayer. He just wanted to show hey I wanna help you so don't stake me!!

I think he was just trying to be a bit coy about it all. By this time, as we find out in the Becoming flashbacks, he was already compelled to want to help her and drawn to her but was aware of all the issues that came with it. I think he was trying to keep himself at a distance and not become too emotionally involved straightaway. With a comment like that he remain vague and mysterious and not give too much of himself away.

It's a bit like a sarcastic remark which sort of throws Buffy off a bit. He dosen't want to give anything away on who he is, and she wants to know more about him.

It's a bit like if it went

Buffy: Who says i want you around?
Angel: Who says i will be?

Even though if that happened, you knew you would see him and her again lol.

It's also a theme that continues throughout Buffy and Angel's relationship: "You're not friends. You'll never be friends." During this first scene, he doesn't know what will happen between them, but he does know that his feelings for her are out of the ordinary; he's not just her helpful pal.

By the time the episode was shot the writers haven't decided that Angel was a vampire yet. He was supposed to be a Whistler-type character, giving Buffy vague clues, giving her information about the demon comminity when story demanded it.

So in this episode he reacts as a human guy, a messenger from some mysterious forces. He looks hurt by her attack (as Whistler wouldn've been). In the next episodes he appears in a mausoleum, by day, gives Buffy information about The Master but doesn't go with her "because he's afraid" (he's still that Whistler-type guy).

But during the shoot of the pilot Joss has noticed the chemistry between the actors and decided to pair Buffy and Angel. And, in order to make it hard for them he turned Angel into a vampire and wrote him a different backstory.

Oh really, in fact I didn't know that !! That's quite interesting and changes the view of the qestion!!

He was deffinately trying to be mysterious, to get Buffy thinking about him. However, today this has been nicked *cough*twilight*cough*. But it is a nice start to their relationship, as it leaves the audience questioning what will happen between the two characters, and I love that. 🙂

Really? That's extremely interesting! I've honestly never read that anywhere else. But then again, i didn't notice that the shot in the mausoleum was during the day 🙄 Guess that shows what keen observation skills i have.

He does seem awefully arrogant, specially considering what we find out about his backstory and when we get to know him. But as mentioned above, since the writers remade him(great new info btw, got a source for that [MENTION=10218]Moscow Watcher[/MENTION] ?) we have to make up a good reason for it. I guess as said above he was just trying to keep a distance to her. Maybe he already knew he was in love with her but didn't want to be. Or/and thought she shouldn't trust him.

-- I can't find the source. I was sure I read about it in the long-defunct TV Tome. But I checked TV Tome Buffy trivia I saved on my computer - and it wasn't there. I reread the transcript of the press-junket at BtVS presentation in 1997 - and it wasn't there. So - sorry, I can't find the source.

Certain scenes, such as the argument between Giles and Buffy in the library, and Buffy's first meeting with Angel, were re-shot eight months after the first episode was recorded with both Whedon and Gellar feeling that Buffy was too angry in the original takes.
