Angel's Tattoo

Hey Everybody!🙂
I was just reading some fanfiction and I read something that reminded me about Angel's tattoo (the griffin or "bird-animal thing" behind his right shoulder), so I looked up "griffins" on google and found something on a website that caught my attention...

"At first (the griffin) was also protrayed as a satanic figure entrapping human souls..."

I found it kind of cool, it got me wondering though, if Giles read about it in the watchers diaries from when Angel was all evil, why would Angelus get a tattoo that means something like that?

Anyways, thought it was kind of wierd. What do you guys think about it?

That is very interesting. Angel most likely got that tattoo after he got his soul back...especially if its an intricate or complex tattoo because I doubt they were able to do anything like that back in the 19th century.

I'm not sure if I understand what you're curious about Angelic_Slayer, but you should check this one out. It's one of the better thought out theories I've seen on these boards.

Magui explains Angel's Tatoo]

Woah. That was amazingly long and drawn out but entirely enlightening. I wonder if they'll get into it at all in the movies (If there are movies, which there may not be, and if they can get DB to be in them, which they won't *sob*).

*Tries to post on that thread, realizes she can't, decides to post here*

The whole "one of four" thing sees to work well with Angel, he was with Darla and another couple (Spike and Dru, James and Elizabeth) for most of his undeath, then in AtS he had Wes, Cordy and Gunn in S2, followed by Wes, Fred, and Gunn in S5.

Wow :jaw_drop:

Thanks for the link to "Mangui explains Angel's tattoo", when I was reading it I began to wonder if it was by Joss Whedon or something (just because of all of the info in the post). I'm going to read it a couple more times, so my brain can process all the words (3am here, mind is kinda slow), but it does explain the whole tattoo REALLY well so thanks again. 😀

I got curious about the tattoo when I was watching one of the earlier BTVS episodes ("Angel"), and just got wondering about the tattoo. So when I looked it up and found the meaning for griffin I thought entrapping human souls would make sense (because Angel well, has a soul), but didn't Giles find that out from the watchers diaries, that were talking about Angelus from 200 years ago? Just wondered why Angelus would get a tattoo like that.

Again it's important to point out the distinction between a Griffon and a winged Lion. A winged lion is a specifically Christian symbol, a Griffon is not. Angel's tattoo is, as was mentioned in the other thread, NOT a Griffon. A Griffon has an Eagles' Head as well as their wings.

It seems appropriate that he'd have a Christian symbol on his tattoo, since that was an overriding force in his human life (one would assume) and all his actions, from his name "Angelus" to his fondness for sacking convebts, seem to show an obsession with the Church and Christian symbolism. Just look at these lines from "Somnambulist".

Kate: Yeah, it's pretty grim, isn't it? I've spent the last 48 hours putting together a suspect profile, and believe me, being inside this guy's head hasn't been a whole lot of fun. - The tabloids are calling him "˜the pope'. Probably thinks he's doing God's work."
Angel: "No. Just the opposite. This is about mocking God. (Sees her looking at him) That's my guess."

Wesley: "When I saw this story today it rang chillingly familiar. So I reacquainted myself with certain facts, confirming, I'm sorry to say, my grim suspicions. In the late 1700s it was Angelus' custom to "˜sign' his victims by carving a Christian cross into their left cheek. (Cordy flips through the folder) H liked to let people know he'd been there."

Oh, one other thing I forgot to mention about the Book of Kells: Due to the intricacy and near perfection of the artwork it was for many years reputed to have been written by...you've guessed it - Angels. Which isn't too hard to believe, its really something. I have a CD Rom of it somewhere, I'll try and dig it out to show a clearer pic than the one I posted above. Presumably Angel got the tatt done fairly recently, since the book itself hasn't left the careful possession of Trinity College in Dublin for about 4 hundred years.

So if he got it after he was re-ensouled, does that mean it was a kind of repentance thing instead of a mocking God thing?

I'm beginning to think so. For one thing, it's a really beautiful illustration, and somehow I don't picture God swooning in offence at that. I suppose you could say that the message is "Hah! I've got your purdy picture on my back, and I'm a right b*stard!" but somehow I think there are more overt ways of p*ssing off yer man upstairs.

no its the one on his back, u can see it when hes draining buffy

Ah you said David's tattoo, hence confusion.

David's tattoo is the thing on his wrists, Angel's is the bird. Its not a real tattoo.

This is neither appropriate or acceptable for a family board like this one.
