CAVALRY

The Good;
Angelus is so evil and conniving you wonder if Holtz and co had a point? Altogether a great episode with so many wonderful scenes

The Bad;
?

Best line:
Cordelia; (stabbing Lilah) "Why do you think I let him out you stupid bitch?"

Jeez, how did they get away with that?
Some nastily implied racism when Angelus goads Gunn (Liam of course was also pretty racist to Gunn and Wesley in 'Spin the Bottle'). The vamps killing the firemen is also nasty but worst of all the tragedy of the vamped little girl, you realise why Holtz was right to kill his daughter.

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Cliches

Inverting the Hollywood cliche;
Fred wants to continue her relationship with Gunn after she learns of Wes and Lilah. But he turns her down, obviously been getting lessons in quiet dignity from the Groo (Riley could have done with some).

In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cheap Angel; 6

Fang Gang in bondage:
Cordy: 5
Angel: 13
Wes: 6
Gunn; 4
Lorne; 4
Fred; 2

Kills: 1 demon for Gunn
Cordy: 5 vamps, 3½ demons
Angel; 41 vamps, 57 and 1/2 demons, 5 zombies, 8 humans
Doyle; 1 vamp
Wes; 12 demons+3 vamps, 5 zombies, 2 humans
Kate; 3 vamps
Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans.
Gunn; 11 vamps+ 13 demons, 5 zombies, 1 human.
Groo; 1 demon
Fred; 3 vamp+ 1 demon, 5 zombies
Connor; 12 vamps, 5 zombies, 2 demons
Fang Gang go evil: CC and how!
Cordy: 3
Angel: 3
Gunn; 1
Wes; 1

Alternate Fang Gang:
Cordy: 4
Angel: 10
Fred; 2
Wes; 1
Gunn; 1

Characters killed:
255

Recurring characters killed; alas poor Lilah, she was evil but I always felt there was hope for her.
9;

Total number of Angel Investigations:
Angel, Gunn, Fred, Lorne, Wes, CC

Angel Investigations shot: Angelus by Lilah (if she still had her pistol why not use that when Wes enters her hideaway?). CC takes an arrow
Angel: 12
Wes; 1

Packing heat; Gunn with the flamethrower we saw in 'Dad'
Wes; 7
Doyle; 1
Angel; 3
Gunn; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Interestingly it's Gunn who breaks up with Fred rather than the other way around
Cordy: 5 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast+Phantom Dennis+Groo+Connor
Angel: 5; Buffy, Darla and The Transcending Furies
Wes; 3; Virginia, the bleached blonde and Lilah
Gunn; 1 Fred
Fred; 1 Gunn
Groo; 1Cordy

Kinky dinky:
Angelus threatens to rape Fred to death. He also tells an aghast Fred about Wes and Lilah. Angelus thinks Lilah wears a thong.

Captain Subtext;
Angelus thinks Wes is quite the dish 'if I swung that way'. Lilah comments that Lorne's suits make him look like Liberace. Lilah calls Fred 'honey' and asks if CC is trying to 'turn her on?'.

Know the face, different character; 4

Parking garages;
6,

Guantanamo Bay;

Buffy characters on Angel; 16
Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

What the fanficcers thought; read an interesting one once where Angelus wipes AI out but then Dru get's resouled and forms her own heroic gang with Lilah, Kate, Gwen, Oz, Justine, Bethany, Ethan Rayne etc

Questions and observations;
Interestingly in this ep we're told a soul can be destroyed which I didn't think was possible. We learn that Angel always suspected that Gunn killed Sidel. The soul-stealer was buried by the Chumash who are the American Indian tribe also featured in 'Pangs'. Nice scene with Connor and Gunn bonding during the digging. Well, hands up who saw this twist coming? Liars! Shocking an all pretty damn brilliant. But you know what, it only get's better from now on! Nice scene at the end where CC and Lilah almost seem to bond a little. Lilah's 'he killed the...' speech appears to be part inspired by 'The Usual Suspects', could the Beast be in fact Keyser Soze? Or is that CC?

Marks out of 10; 9/10

I'd seen spoilers so I knew, but I'm pretty sure if I hadn't seen the spoilers I'd have been totally shocked.

Great episode. Angelus is still cruel like in BtVS S2, which he'll turn into a loser in the next eps. 😛

Lilah shooting slow-mo is awesome. I'm a big slow-mo fan. I was so sad that she died. She's one of the most interesting characters.

By the way, I always think that when Connor got his soul sucked, it made him be more heartless, don't you think!!??

/me is dying just think I'm gonna post my thought about Faith's episodes tomorrow(or today, if I'm lucky). >_<

One of my favourite episodes of AtS(and also the Faith episodes of this season are great and some of my fav) and possibly best quality of season 4.Angelus is always interesting(apart from sexy-it's not my fault!David is even hotter when he is evil 😛). I knew Cordy was behaving weirdly but I didn't expect Lilah's death!

And poor Fred. I always felt sad when she found out about Lilah and Wes. It's obvious she cares!

I had not been spoilered and was absolutely shocked when it happened. However upon re-watch it became clear that the writers were very confused about what to do with CC so I imagine it makes sense.

She was a very boring character for the last half of S3 and most of S4.

I still love her anyway.

Man, I loved Lilah.
Such a shame she died.

Like evil Cordy although the cirumstances in which she became evil is something I LOATH.
If the Connor/Jasmine deal hadn't have happened, I would've been able to enjoy EC a little more.

Cordy kills Lilah, how dare she! Such a shocker it really is! I loved Lilah being with the whole gang, it's gotta be the first time she has been with them all right? Fred finding out about Lilah and Wes poor Fred! Such a great episode. In my top 5 of S4.

This is a great episode. I love the little bonding scenes, I love Angelus on the loose 😀 (a little too much maybe) but I remember the first time I saw it and I quite literally jumped up from my seat and gasped in horror as CC killed Lilah!
Just like you I always thought there was hope for her.

Love this episode and thought it was great. First time around I was shocked I thought there was something off about Cordy but did not see her being evil coming.

Cordelia; (stabbing Lilah) "Why do you think I let him out you stupid bitch?
I laugh at that line but at the same time I'm like ouch Cordy lets clean your mouth out with orbit shall we 😉

Yep, big shocker here the first time I saw it. I do not like Evil Cordy- I don't think Charisma Carpenter does evil well (or maybe that she doesn't do Cordy being evil well).

Angelus still rocks in this ep. His dialogue gets much lamer after this, although his fight scenes (with the Beast & Faith) still kick ass. Stalking Lilah through the hotel is creepy. RIP Lilah. 🙁

I love Gunn's "Darth Vampire". And of course Lilah's "Kill you all in a bloody shower of violence, but hey! Greater good!"

I'm confused as to the title of this ep, though. What does it refer to? At first I thought it was referring to Lilah's quote about sending in the cavalry, but that's a completely different word, and I don't see the symbolism of the site where Jesus was crucified.

I see it like it is the results of their decision to bring Angelus back and the Calvary reference is to "Forgive them, Father, they know not what they do".

Ooh, that's a good take on it.

TV.com also says "The title "Calvary" is from Latin calvaria, which is from Greek krani`on, which is the root of "cranium". It literally means a bare skull (bare usually meaning bald, not fleshless as in the episode)."

I forgot to mention my absolute favorite quote of the episode-
Lorne: Wesley, would you please warn this walking infection that I haven't forgotten how she poked my head open like a Capri Sun, and while my love for humanity allows me to tolerate her presence, if need be, I will smack her down! Be a doll, thanks.

Oh, I almost forgot Lilah's "Dud ex Machina". The writers poking fun at themselves?

Love the eps. The demon Connor and Gunn dug up scared me when I first saw this eps. The slow mo is awesome and Angelus grabbing the arrow and throwing it back was badass.

I was so shocked when Cordy killed Lilah. I didn't see it coming at all!

Glad Lilah is gone. I never liked her.

This episode is sooo good...I loved it. I KNEW it was Angelus...I knew it! I think I may have had doubts after a while but when they pointed the camera towards the chains on the cell I was sure he was Angelus...David gave it all, seriously..he was awesome! Fred and Gunn..I'm not really sad for them..I thought they were cute but nothing special..Fred is more annoying that ever..I can't stand her..while Lilah..come on, just when I was starting to love this character Cordelia kills her. I was so shocked by the ending I couldn't even speak. I'm so sad for Lilah..I would've loved to see a proper relationship of her and Wesley..and she was great in this episode, made me laugh a lot and I cheered for her when she was talking to Cordelia..God, I can't stand her in this season, especially in this episode.

I asked you this on another thread, but are you watching ATS for the 1st time? I'm loving reading your reactions! :)

Yes..it is my very first time. Actually, it's quite complicated. When I knew they were doing Angel I refused to watch it (I think I only saw I will remember you at that time) but I still wanted to know what happened so I read summaries that weren't very detailed so after a few years I know the general idea of the show and what happens but many things are unknown to me...like, I forgot Cordelia was getting pregnant or she turned kinda evil...all those things were gone from my brain so it's like the first time watching them..it's another whole thing. But I like you like my reactions!! Aahahahah. I write right after I watch an episode! 🙂
