GUISE WILL BE GUISE

The Good;
So wonderful, finally Wes gets a chance to shine and it's just fabulous. Also love Cordy's Angel impression. And love Rick the guard quietly sloping off when it's revealed that he'd had sex with his employer's daughter.

Bad;
Gunn never noticed the existance of netherworld? So how come he once traded his soul at a demon casino? (The House Alway's Wins) Surely there's a better way to get Angels help than threatening Cordy? Wouldn't have Wes have noticed that he'd deflowered Virginia during their sex?

Best line:
Angel; "Wesley was in virginia?"
Wes; "That's beside the point"

Jeez, how did they get away with that?
The father who wants to sacrifice his daughter, my god, talk about the lowest of the low! Prophetically she observes he also insures his car. Angel tortures fake Swami with fishing hook and line through his cheek.

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Cliches

Damsel in distress; 17

Inverting the Hollywood cliche;
Angel plans to infiltrate WR&H by 'moving real fast'
As Gunn horrifiedly observes 'Going real quick was the plan?"

In disguise;
No but love the way Cordy and Wes are able to infiltrate WR&H with just a business suit and a pair of glasses and Wes' Angel impression is priceless.

Wes; 2, one bleached blonde and Virginia

Kinky dinky:
Wes has sex with Virginia although he doesn't take her virginity, that was long gone (what girl ever didn't fool her father in that regard?). Of course if she had sex at 16 that's technically statuatory rape in California. Virginia is lovely, check her out as the 'Blair' witch in Charmed although her outfit in that episode exaggerates her (already respectable) cleavage to the degree it may knock you unconscious. Cordy observes that he 'screwed her over'. The thug refers to Cordy as Angel's piece. Yeska comments that the sacrifice is impure, as Cordy later observes if it was sacrificing male virgins the world would be aethiest in a second. Angel protests he isn't a eunuch and that the curse isn't that clear as later proven by Nina/Darla/The Furies.

Captain Subtext;
Cordy asks Wes if he has any clothes 'a man would wear'? Of course being Wes he has some excellent suits and Cordy has a very nice business suit. Cordy says she loves Angel. She also refers to Angel as girly. The fake Swami's recipie for Angel's happiness is word perfect for his relationship with Buffy, using her as a Darla substitute (but Buffy made him happy and Darla didn't).

Guantanamo Bay;

Buffy characters on Angel; 12
Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru

Questions and observations;
Angel says he rarely goes to church although it's implied that he's a Catholic. A great satire on Hollywood success, anyone with talent and looks has to have magic. A terrific lightweight comedy episode with Wes coming into his own for the first time and getting a girlfriend, just as he should have.
Marks out of 10; 8/10

I really like this episode. Wes pretending he's Angel was just too funny, Alexis really suits comedy. And loved Wes and Cordy/Buffy/Angel.

Angel; "Wesley was in virginia?"
Wes; "That's beside the point"

Hee-hee. That always makes me chuckle.

10/10 for me also. I liked Virginia.

Wanna know something really sad? It wasn't until re-watching the episode last week that I finally caught that line.

That's ok for the longest time I thought Spike went to Africa to get his chip removed and the demon double-crossed him

I had thought that too the first time I watched it.

Well, that's what I thought until I read on this forum that it wasn't for that :')

I think that's what you were supposed to think.
An amazing Wesley episode. I didn't notice that line too because my Thai subtitle said "Wes went to Virginia". I like Verginia character and the way she told everyone she's not virgin. 😉

Just finished watching this ep again. I won't rehash any of the stuff said previously coz Saturn pretty much nailed it. Just a thought tho, anyone else think that the fake swami was kinda good? His advice was actually kinda helpful & pretty much on the nose. What he said about Angel & the demon inside him being one & the same reminded me of the graphic novel/comic story about how Oz managed to control his lycanthropy, well at least until he smelt Willow on (to him) some random chick 🙂

I love this ep!! I might be a tad biased because Wesley is my favorite. But the episode is funny! It always makes me laugh no matter what!

Thanks you're too kind

I absolutely love this episode!! 😀 😀 😀

I love how Wesley certainly shines through with this ep. I think he deserves it. Since is the one episode they kept calling him Doyle.

I like how the Dad calls Angel a Yunic 😀 😀 HAHA the bestttt!!! I also loved the part when it is the middle of the day..and the shami impressinator says Angel can't get to him. Then he gets that fishing pole, he hooks his LIP!! OMG it looked so painful. 😀 10/10

Nice episode. Wesley was fun but Virginia was quite annoying for me.

She was pretty hot though!😀 (always had a thing for redheads, sexiest woman on TV is Marcia Cross followed by that Mythbusters girl)

Ahahah..well, she's a pretty girl but was annoying in this episode..I just watched The Thin Dead Line and she gets better in this. LOL
Found a cute quote:
Alexis Denisof enjoyed playing Angel in this episode, although when the BBC asked him what the props team used for the fake blood he had to drink, he was unsure. "I should find out," he says. "I haven’t been feeling well ever since."[1]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guise_Will_Be_Guise

Anyway, this episode isn't any kind of big plot twist or anything, but it sure is fun. So glad Wesley gets an episode devoted to him. And yeah, I did think the "swami" had some good points, and funny quips about Angel's hair. I always love jokes about Angel's hair. I actually liked Virginia!

Work has been taking it's toll on me so have been sleeping loads when not working, will find your poll now
How could I not love this epsiode? It has Wesley in his wonderful coat. 😉
I think this episode was funny. I didn't care for Virginia that much the first time but I don't mind her now.
^ agree with Saturn 5 she is very pretty. I always loved her hair.

It's a fun Wesley episode but doesn't rank well with me. I dislike episodes where people are made sacrifice's, this and The Bachelor Party, yuck!

Where've you been, Lilah? I actually started a poll without you! :)
Damn - that was my second viewing and I still didn't get the 'That's beside the point' joke until i read it just now. I was too busy laughing that Angel thought Wes had gone to the East Coast.

i thought it was very cool that a Swami would be portrayed as such a down to earth character (the bugs are getting in) - i was almost disappointed he was a fake - so it was a big surprise when Gunn got clobbered.
Lots of laufghs. Alexis was wonderful and i had tears rolling down my face from laughing at the to-ing and fro-ing in this exchange:

Bryce: "She was a virgin before you got here."
Virginia: "I was *not* a virgin!"
Bryce: "What?"
Wesley: "Oh, thank goodness."
Gunn: "I could have told you she was no virgin."
Angel: "I'm not a eunuch."
Cordy: "One day as Angel! One day! - and he's getting some."

Love this episode, Wesley is my favorite character on Ats. 😀
I'm not a fan of Virginia though, I didn't mind her but I didn't care either, and I did not think she was hot, and I usually have a thing for redheads as well, Alyson Hannigan, Ariel the little mermaid...

Wesley actually drank blood! ew!
And this episode has yet another bad parent, very common in Ats and Btvs.

Best line, Angel at the end:
Angel: "Bodyguard to the stars." Yeah, right.

My favorite lines? The whole bit where Angel keeps pestering Wesley about his coat. "Is that my coat?" "Can I have my coat back?"

It was nice to see a Wesley episode. I can only take so much Cordelia...

I love this ep because it's a wonderful Angel/Wes fest.

It talks a lot about identity and how one sees themselves. The wonderful irony of this episode is rooted in using false identity to understand the root of one's identity, get me?

I'll explain: Funnily Cordy actually shows how Wesley sees himself. Before she said that she couldn't believe that Wesley ever had sex. In this episode, she undermines his masculinity, calls him a Shemp and implies that it was because he posed as Angel that got him laid. Although it's played for laughs, the seriousness is rooted in Wes lack of confidence. Angel(us) called him on it in Eternity and we blantently see the cause of this insecurity is his father.

The reason Wes does so well is because he gets out of his own head and own insecurities. He sees Angel as confident and competent and so he plays the part. In doing so he realises he too possess these skills just has to believe it. Also Wes is good looking, smart and a British guy living in LA. It's not surprising he's getting laid the most out of group.

The parallel, is Angel and the faux swami. The Swami was a fake, but the issues they deal with are real. They actually deal with the whole Angel/Angelus issue. While I think there is some DID going on, part of his issue is deliberate disassociation. I like that they dealt with Angel's vanity and dress sense. My brother once commented on the fact that Angel must know he's comes across as cool. He's good looking well dressed and when he opens his mouth, to many mainly women, he comes across as thoughful, intelligent and sensitive. In She he comments on how he thought he comes across as cool. The main issue is not about appearences but how he sees himself. Again, he can't look in the mirror but he sees both man and demon. On one hand he's a charming man and a hero, but on the other hand he's a monster with murderous past. He finds it difficult reconcile those sides, but they are both part of him.

All in all, a great ep. One of the reasons I love Season 2.

I always enjoy reading your analysis. Good points. :)
She lost her V-card before Wes...she said she has another lover before.

Seeing Wes like this got me a little annoyed...ugh lol he looked so lame trying to be someone he's not.

Watching this ep for the first time, so my observations as I go along:

1. What is UP with Cordi's hair?!
2. If that guy tried to kidnap Angel with a gun, he's be hurting.
3. Wesley drinking the blood....GROSS! Also, slick moves on the ninjas, Wes.
4. "Find another small, blonde, love her then treat her like crap. You're inner demon will thank me, I promise." BAHAHAHA. But...sad, too...
5. Oh, please don't tell me Wes is going to do it with Virginia...oh, crimany, he did.
6. Ugh, fish hook!! Nice move, though!
7. HAHAHA, Daddy finding out daughter isn't a virgin while Angel defends his curse.
8. Rick coughing and leaving the room. Heehee.
9. Love the end scene with Angel and Cordelia all jealous!
