Of course the term Reaper is another supernatural series and he too sends souls to hell. Mercedes McNab guest-starred and at one point the devil goes 'Ooohhh Buffy' when handing Sam a stake to recapture an evil soul who thinks she's a vampire (because there are no vampires in the Reaperverse). Spike refers to the King's English as he's seen 2 Queens in his time (Victoria and Elizabeth 2nd) and 4 kings (Edward 7th, George 5th, Edward 8th, George 6th). Spike calls Angel 'Liam', he knows his backstory. Angel likes Spike's poems, did he continue to write AFTER he became a vampire? Spike suspects that it may be the First Evil tormenting him which seems logical. Spike also says he's been a ghost for months which gives us some timeframe. Love to have seen Lee or some of the other casualties from WR&H over the years as Reaper's puppets. In many ways I think they try to cast Fred as the team glamourpuss but she doesn't really cut the mustard in that regard, Amy Acker a beautiful woman but just doesn't compare to CC, Buffy, Faith etc (although she's a revelation as Whiskey on Dollhouse!). Very Christian idea of hell. Eve is actually quite heroic here. Very little Lorne, he's really sidelined this season even if he's now a regular. The fate of Pavayne is very reminiscent of the fate of the 'Family of Blood' in the Dr Who ep of the same name (possibly the best ep ever?), both it and Torchwood drawing a LOT from Buffy and Angel (Angel sunk to the bottom of the ocean by his son, Capt Jack buried alive by his brother). So what happens to Pavayne AFTER the fall of WR&H at the end of the season? When Pavayne says that 'There's hope for you yet boy' when Spike has the choice of being human or rescuing Fred does he mean good Spike or evil Spike? Presumably Fred told Spike about Angel's Manilow obsession?

This episode is pretty gory. I don't much like the episodes that come before this. Pretty weak IMO.

Spike the NAKED hero! Popular with Spikettes and indeed Fred fans. I think Spike will always be a nancy boy crying for his mother, as Darla said to Angelus, the loves we have in life follow us wherever we go

Right I had this all planned out in my head earlier but I've forgotten most of it.

Firstly what's interesting is that Angel tries to do an unconscious 'Angelus' to Spike by passing on his own dispair. Now it seems that Spike buys into this. Now near the end something interesting happens. Pavayne forces Spike to make a choice and he takes a moment to consider. Pavayne sees this and says there is hope for him yet and Spike says says "Not really" I found this either misleading or quite spot on. If Spike means there is no hope for him as person then he's dead wrong. Spike has enogh faith in himself to fight against Pavayne. If he means that there is no hope that he will turn out like Pavayne then he's right.

Obvious parallels: Spike is straddling hell in the literal sense but he's able to fight against it. Angel's damnation is more figurative and more dangerous because unlike Spike's he's accepting it and not fighting against it.

Honestly I thought this episode largely failed. I found the Reaper was kind of boorish, and the scenes with his henchmen were more awkward than scary.

Spike just fits in perfectly in both shows, you gotta love JM. What is with him and getting nude? I like the Spike and Fred relationship a lot. This episode was pretty freaky I fought, should of so been a 18.

I've had much more "Jeez, how did they get away with that" moments in Angel than in Buffy, and this episode was another example.
Brr. I was so scared. And disgusted.
But Spike was awesome in it. Like when he understood he could influence the reality and touch things with a lot of will.

I wonder tough, does he ever gets really corporeal this season or does he always has to concentrate on being corporeal?

IIRC, he does indeed become corporeal, although I can't remember when (& I'm not going to go look it up, I want it to remain a surprise).

Love this Spike-centered ep. Although Pavayne's manner of speaking annoyed me and reminded me of Gnarl. I like the Spike/Fred interaction, and if she & Wesley hadn't gotten together, the development of that would've been interesting. This was one of the scariest Buffyverse eps for me (along with Hush and I Fall to Pieces). I watched it last night after everyone had gone to sleep and I was creeping myself out LOL.

What's going on with Angel here? Is taking over W&H affecting him that much, or is it fallout from season 4?

The partial nudity stuff made me LOL, we've seen more of Spike's "dead body" (Riley reference heh-heh) in BTVS s6.

Finally some of the old Spike revived in this episode. How cute are him and Fred????? I absolutely loved their interactions and how he chose to save her. Lovely foundations of something more...I think that, with both shows, my ships are clearly defining themselves (besides Bangel, who's always been there). The Reaper was a little bit boring but some scenes were scary. I just adored when Angel said he loved Spike's poems...and he said Angel likes Barry Manilow...pure gold.
