ORPHEUS

The Good;
Fabulous, the wonderful flashbacks and Faith and Willow working together with AI, just amazing!

The Bad;
All too wonderful for anything like that. A bit stupid that they put Ally's name in the opening titles, spoils the suprise of her appearance somewhat.

Best line;
Faith; "Dust in the wind. Candle in the wind. There'll be a general wind theme"
plus
CC; "Oh sh...!"
and flapper "Pound snow you mook!"

Jeez, how did they get away with that?
2 headed foetal pigs? Yuck!

Kinky dinky:
CC accuses Connor of liking the way Faith 'cracked her whip' and thinks he wants to be in her 'leather clad lap'. Wes tells Willow about having a woman chained in a closet, she seems more intrigued than shocked. Angelus refers to keeping Faith's thighs warm. CC and Connor's relationship is described as 'icky'. Faith says of Connor 'Break me off a switch, there's going to be a whipping!". Angelus refers to 'eating' his mama!!!!

Captain Subtext;
Willow describes Connor as handsome and androgynous, hmmmm? Plenty of Fred/Willow subtext, even Wes gives a little look when Willow strokes Fred's chin, especially when Willow asks 'What's Fred's story?' and speaks of 'The call of Fred'. Fred wants to discuss Baachanals with Willow. However she later tells Fred 'I'm seeing someone' by which she means Kennedy back in Sunnydale. Faith calls Angelus 'princess'.

What the fanficcers thought;
Not much fic on this ep itself but quite a lot on Willow and Faith's drive back to Sunnydale which must have been a pretty awkward trip. They normally go along the lines of Faith apologising for what she's done followed by Willow forgiving her and explaining her own dark deeds. Then they stop at a motel and have a night of lesbian sex. After all, Willow says that she 'got a Slayer' out of helping Angel Investigations.

Missing scenes;
According to the commentary we have an extra scene where Faith and Angelus see Angel discovering the Hyperion? Why not include that on special edition DVDs?

Questions and observations;
Willow makes her 3rd appearance on Angel. This is actually quite momentous as it means she's actually the 2nd most prolific character in the Buffyverse. Angel is number 1 with 167eps (57eps of Buffy and 110 eps of his own show), Willow is 2nd with 147eps (144 eps of Buffy and 3 appearances on Angel) and Buffy herself is joint 3rd with 146eps (144 eps of her own show and 2 guest slots on Angel not counting archive footage taken from Buffy or the movie) with Cordy who also has 146 appearances (57 eps of Buffy and 89eps of Angel). Then comes Xander with 143 eps of Buffy (he's in every ep of Buffy except 'Conversations with Dead People'), Giles with 123 eps of Buffy, Spike with 120 (97 eps of Buffy and 23 of Angel) and Wes with 107 (6eps of Buffy and 101 of Angel).
I'm sure most Xena fans will recognise Adrienne Wilkinson who played Xena's daughter Livia/Eve as the flapper whose dog Angel saves. Met her at a convention once and she's beautiful and charming. Gina Torres, another Xena/Hercules alumni will turn up in a few eps time and Orpheus is the name of an early Xena ep.
The flashbacks help us track the various stages of Angel through the years. They basically fall down to;
1. Post resouling daze; (as seen in Darla)
2. Try to get back with Darla in Peking;
3. Coming to America; ('Orpheus')
4. Brooding loner; (up until the events of 'Are you now or ever have been?')
5. Hedonism aka The Manilow Years; (up until feeding on the guy in the doughnut shop in Orpheus)
6. Street tramp; (up until meeting Whistler in Becoming pt2)
7. Sunnydale
CC refers to Willow as Glinda, the good witch from The Wizard of Oz (Cordy herself doing a good impression of the Wizard behind the screen). If you haven't seen Wicked go immediately, it's great and you'll never watch TWOO the same way again. What a shame we never get Barry Manilow to guest star as he did on Will and Grace. Gunn once again tells Connor off, once again playing the father role to him. The guy who walks past Angel in the doughnut shop may have been doing cocaine and that's why his blood is racing. With the exception of flashback this will be the last time we see Angelus begging the question is he actually gone for good after Angel and Angelus' epic face off in the dreamworld.
Maybe I've been watching too many Michael Jackson tribute shows but everytime I see the 1920s sequence with it's flappers and zoot-suited fedora wearing wiseguys playing dice outside the speakeasy I keep expecting them to break into 'Smooth Criminal'?

Marks out of 10; 10/10 Faith AND Willow in the same episode of Angel, makes you want to cry with happiness! Rewatched this one 4 times! I know I previously said 5 by 5 was my favourite but actually this is my favourite although the Wes drops the knife bit is still my favourite moment ever

I LOVE this episode. Possibly the best episode of season 4. I also love the Fred/Willow scenes. Willow clearly thought Fred was flirting with her. It was so cute.

I love the scene where Angel and Angelus faced off.

20/20.

I can't remember how many times I've seen this episode. I love it purely because Faith and Willow are in the same episode. I'm not a big fan of flashbacks, but this one is different because we got to see one hell of a girl walking in Angel's mind. 😉

Willow and Fred are so cute together. I cracked up every time I see Willow telling Fred "I'm seeing someone" and Fred doesn't get it. :lmao:

The fight between Angel and Angelus is awesome. I know it's hard to make this scene because they need Angel double. But they did it very well.

Did you guy see Nate Dushku? He's the guy who shot the cashier.

And yay, Willow brought a surprise back to Sunnydale like she told Buffy in Lie My Parents Told Me. :yay:

100/100

I love this ep sooo much! My favourite flashback is probably Angel rescuing the puppy. And the way he says "beat it, Betty" is just so weird, I love it.

I didn't know Angel was THAT sensitive!!!How can I resist the guy?<3
Just watched this episode during my rewatch and i think i may agree with Saturn. Its a cracking episode which is fascinating and packed with entertainment. I love having crossovers so seeing Willow was great. The flashbacks were not only interesting but funny, David Boreanaz is superb in this episode.

If not the best Angel episode its definately in the top 3. I didn't remember what happened in the episode because i hadn't seen it since it aired which meant i enjoyed it even more.

This episode just works and I enjoyed it a lot. It could be the best of the season. I like the feel when Willow comes and I enjoyed seeing Faith when she went into Angel's mind.

The scene where evil Cordy wants to stab Willow and of course in Willow fashion she is thinking of something else and is going in a different direction and leaves. The face on evil Cordy when this happens.

Many moments to remember from this episode. 🙂

It's so easy to forget how brilliant David Boreanaz was as Angelus-his sarcastic cry of, 'Bring on the pain!' as '70's Angel loads up Manilow on the jukebox may be one of the funniest moments in a series, EVER. Just a cracking episode.

i loved the "almost-fangel moments" when faith and angel talk about hugging "but we can't have that"

Lol, I agree, I loved this episode and all of those lines. Watching Angelus watching Angel save puppies and such was hilarious. This episode also gave me a better perspective on what Angel had been doing for the last hundred years after Angelus was trapped inside him.

Amazing episode. Faith & Willow in the same episode. Best crossover episode one of the best of Angel. Love Willow and Fred.

What a cast if we had Faith, Spike, Wes, Willow, Fred and Lorne as a gang!!!

I absolutely adore this episode!

I loved the Angel-Angelus fight, and some scene just made me laugh so hard! Like when Angelus says "No. No, I can't get trough this. Not again". I wondered "What's going to happen???" And then "Dude...You saved a puppy!". God I laughed so much! Also, Angel's hair and clothes in the donut shop were kind of incredibly ridiculous, I loved it!
And Fred and Willow seemed very attracted to each other, you could feel the sexual tension between them!

Oh and, did you notice? You could see how much Aly and Alexis love each other, they really had this connection while acting together, Alexis had such a sweet, peaceful look, and Aly seemed kinda excited around him. I really saw their relationship behind their acting, it was too cute!

I thought Willow's spell was more impressive in Becoming!
But I really loved to see some shaking-walls-Willow's magic!

And it was great how Faith just woke up, kicking and alive, and arrive right on time to save Angel!

Really, that was an amazing episode!

I think you need a witch. And here comes Willow!!

It's amazing to think of season 2 Willow doing this same ensouling spell. She has come so far & it's incredible that she had the power even as a teenage girl!

I love Wes' "No other major changes I'm not up on?" "Just little things". LOL

OMG, I can't decide if 70s Angel is the worse fashion, or the flashback in Amends, with the mustache! LMAO, those are terrible looks on him!

I just read this on Wikipedia, and what a weird bit of trivia:
The WB network cut short the final moments of the first airing of "Orpheus" for an emergency broadcast announcing that the United States had invaded Iraq. The episode was rerun the following Saturday

How cute is this?
Hannigan, involved in both American Pie and Buffy while this episode filmed, was excited to work with her fiance, Alexis Denisof, whom she met while the two were on Buffy. Denisof was also excited. "I feel like it's a play day. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm at work," he said. "My girl is here... really all I want to do is run over and give her a hug."[

Doesn't Willow & Cordy's conversation remind you of Amy & Buffy?
Willow: How've you been?
Cordelia: Higher power. You?
Willow: Ultimate evil. But I got better.

Buffy: Hi. How've you been?
Amy: Rat. You?
Buffy: Dead.
Amy: Oh.

Willow knows about Connor. Why do we never see Buffy addressing this? It's kind of a big deal, and is not even brought up in season 8.
"And the sneer's genetic. Who knew?"

And of course we can't have a kumbayaa moment without a big shocker- Cordy big & pregnant. I'm assuming that that is Charisma's real pregnant belly we're seeing since she was PG in season 4?

And I found this awesome fanvid of Salvage/Release/Orpheus:

Rewatched this episode last night and just had to say I'm a total Frillow 'shipper now! 😀

Excellent episode, but 'Cordy' really bugs me. I want to punch her in the face. 😡

I want to do that a lot this season, which is unfortunate since I love CC (both the actress & the character!)
Recently just re-watched entire season 4(the only season I hadn't cleary seen through and understood). I happened to not have caught this episode in my Angel watch, and seeing it on my re-watch I was extremly excited. Willow, one of my favorite Buffyverse Charcacters coming to the show to once again re-ensoul Angel, F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S. I just loved it. the face of between Cordy & Willow (even though Willow didnt know) I had no doubt Willow would win, come on she was Dark Evil Willow once, Cordy couldn't stand a chance. I also loved the faith & Angel walk down memory lane action. Had some good laughs. Though the Angelus vs. Angel thing was a bit weird to me overall i think this was one of the best Angel episode.

Grade: 10/10

The only reservation I have about having Faith and Willow in the same episode together is that I think it takes something away from the Angel Investigations team- they can't solve a problem so they have to get two characters from Buffy to come in and solve it for them. But the flashbacks are very rich, and it's clear in particular that a lot of thought went into how the different characters would relate to Faith- in this and the previous episode, the relationship with Wesley is particularly well thought out because they've both come to respect the other over time.

Fred and Willow are hilarious, though- I suspect that Fred is to an extent what Willow was originally meant to be five years down the line except that the character evolved in another direction- and I think it's more entertaining to see it as Willow misreading Fred's interest in the magical side of things as another sort of interest. But yes, Willow and Faith heading off together does rather invite you to speculate that they might take their time heading back to Sunnydale.

Anyone else wonder why they just didn't bring Willow back in the first place? Just saying. It seemed like they all forgot that she's restored his soul before years before. Going, "uh..what do we do?" and Fred having to eventually made the call was weird. When I first watched S4 I was going "why don't you just call willow instead of trying to do stuff you have never done before? What the heck is wrong with you people?"
