The Good;
Very good ep, we geninely suspect that Angel might be going bad, Penn gives a real sense of menace and some lovely stuff with Kate

The Bad;
Penn's haircut but apart from that not much. Would the police really let Kate go in by herself?

Best line:
Penn; "You know you'll never get to it the exit before I..."
Cordy (opening blinds letting the daylight pour in) "...go up like a match?"
(nothing more satisfying than seeing arrogance shot down)

Jeez, how did they get away with that?
Penn kills his sister and presumably goes on to massacre his family as Angelus did

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Cliches

Damsel in distress; nope, 2.

Inverting the Hollywood cliche;

In disguise; 3

DB get's his shirt off; 3

Cordy's tattoo;3

Cheap Angel; 2

Fang Gang in bondage: Angel
Cordy: 5
Angel: 5
Wes: 1

Fang gang knocked out:
Cordy: 8
Angel: 7
Wes: 1
Doyle; 1

Kills:
Cordy: 3 vamps, ½ a demon from her time in Sunnydale
Angel: 8 vamps, 4 demons, 2 humans.
Doyle; 1 vamp
Kate; 1 vamp

Fang Gang go evil:
Cordy: 1
Angel: 1

Alternate Fang Gang:
Cordy: 2
Angel: 5

Characters killed: Penn's victims
20

Recurring characters killed;
1;

Total number of Angel Investigations:
2, Angel and Cordy

Angel Investigations shot:
Angel: 5,
Packing heat;
Doyle; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost:
Cordy: 1?
Angel: 1;Buffy

Kinky dinky:
Cordy comments that she makes the coffee and gets to chain the boss to the bed. The everyday life of a Hollywood assistant.

Captain Subtext;
Angel(us) is obviously Penn's father figure. Angel(us) is also obsessed with his father

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages;
3, once again, Angel and Wes just seem to be able to drive into the police station.

Guantanamo Bay;

Buffy characters appearing in Angel; (unless someone can correct me no original Angel character ever appears on Buffy?)
6; Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes

Questions and observations;
Very nice reminder from Angel(us) past and the beginning of the real tension between Kate and Angel. Another hint that vamps share some link with those they sired. Love Kate's white sweater. Wes is now in the title sequence. Angel Investigations has a runaway case so they're obviously taking ordinary PI cases in addition to their supernatural work. Does Angel figure out Penn's plan because he knows him? Or is he heading to the police station to speak to Kate over the school bus plan? Or do Wes and he just overhear what's going on at the station with their police scanner? Penn in some ways is reminiscent of Scorpio in Dirty Harry (who also hijacks a school bus).
Met Jeremy Renner at a convention and a fascinating guy, plays in a band, old friend of DB's from their acting classes, went on to star in 28 Weeks Later (as a character called Doyle?), SWAT and Jesse James with Brad Pitt
Marks out of 10; 9/10 would be 10/10 if it had more arc.

I've always loved Angelus/Angel's flashbacks into the past. And I really liked the episode.

10/10.

Somnambulist is of the series best episodes. Penn is such a great bad guy. Great fight scene where he beats Angel and Kate saves him. And when he goes in the police station and attacks the cops. 9/10

It would have been a nice touch if Penn could have featured in a few of the flashbacks to old days Angelus

Would have been great if we had seen him in flashbacks
I don't really like this ep much. Wesley is great in this, but I really dislike Kate. She's gorgeous, but she annoys me a lot. I'll be glad when it gets around to never seeing her again.
:/ I know that's an unpopular feeling, but...
Sorry, Kate-fans!

I don't really like her either. I think it's the whole cop attitude. lol Plus, she's kinda boring.

I love Kate but you won't have to wait long, by the end of season 2 she changes her identity and moves to New York to become a District Attorney

The actor that played Penn(Jeremy Renner) received an Oscar Nominaton yesterday.

Best Actor, for his performance in the film The Hurt Locker.

Congrats to him.

Congrats to him.

Met him once at a convention and very charming and talented guy, not the first Buffy alumni to win an Oscar, Hilary Swank and Ben Affleck appearing in the original movie

Been a fan of Renner ever since the film Dahmer.

There was a reality show on Bravo called The It Factor, aired a few yrs back. hE was one of the struggling actors they featured.

On one of the last eppys, he was tryin decide between two films he was offered. The S.W.A.T remake and a comedy called The Big Bounce.

Jeremy chose S.W.A.T, very smart move IMH0.

He was one of the FEW positive things in that mediocre film.

Plus he continued to work pretty steady afterwards.

I agree 100% w/ the dislike of Kate. I'm not sure why I dislike her I think she portrays an amazing cop. But I guess I'm still not over Buffy and Angel and when this blonde steps in, it kinda bothers me! :X3:

Always some little blonde driving Angel to distraction as CC might say:smile3:

LMAO! So, do you guys like her better in Law & Order?

I thought this was a great episode- fantastic fight scenes. I love how Kate stakes Penn through Angel, that was sharp. Like others, I do wish we had more episodes with Penn, he would've been a great reoccurring villian. And Cordy's conversation with Angel at the end was great- where do you think things changed for her? Because she sure as heck wasn't like that in Sunnydale.

I'm kind of confused about something I just read on the Wikipedia entry for this episode:
After writing the first draft, Tim Minear had to rewrite parts of the script to accommodate Wesley's arrival and Doyle's departure; the final scene on the rooftop was originally between Angel and Doyle.[1] The script was originally called "The Killer I Created", until a detailed summary appeared online, prompting Minear to alter the title. "I went on to the Buffy message board... changed the title and said it was about dreams and about horrible things that you do in your sleep, which completely fooled the fans," says Minear.[1]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somnambulist_(Angel)

So, does that mean that they [Joss et al] had not originally intended for Doyle to leave at all, and then changed their mind later? Or that they weren't sure where exactly in the season they were going to kill him off?

Sounds like they moved it out of sequence - it must have been great to be here while the show was running and have the writers turn up and wind everyone up lol
loved this episode, nicely tense with Cordy's "someone else goes on and on and on" punching a guffaw out of me.

I liked the the father figure joke too

"OK you're grounded!"
