Angel In Season 7 Why?

Well, I think the way you were using 'plot device' was being perceived in a dismissive, negative way.

I mean was anyone actually really surprised that he didn't show up? Or think it was totally out of character for him to have done so? That's the only way I can understand people thinking he had no purpose or shouldn't have been there.

No matter what was going on in L.A, Buffy was an incredibly important person to him and he would have gone to see her before she faced such a huge event. If he hadn't have shown up I'm sure that on the other side of things Angel would have been torn apart for not going to see her before she faced this battle.

And the fan service thing always makes me laugh, isn't that the only reason Spike even comes back after season two? To pander to what some fans wanted? 😉

I think it was right for Angel to appear in the finale, given that he was a fan-favourite and played (plays?) such a huge part in Buffy's life and the world the show inhibits.

It was 'closure' - of a sort.

But it was also right that Buffy quickly sent him away. It was her big moment after all. End of her story. End of her show.

I'm alright with Angel's appearance in itself. But his actions were very OOC and don't fit well with the events of "Home". After everything Angel went through in the past three weeks, I really doubt he'd be so nonchalontly jokey and casual. Also, Angel should not have forgotten all his character development since S3. Buffy and Angel should be acting around each other like they did IWRY - awkward and tense. Angel should not expect a kiss on arrival and then - despite nothing having changed since S3, where they broke up, if anything they have grown further apart - ask if they can get back together. Awful, awful character writing.

I agree and that's pretty much what I mean when I say it's OOC for Angel to have been there. Motivation wise, I can see Angel turning up (though where was he for the last three apocalypses?), but it was what he said and did whilst he was there in Sunnydale that I find OOC.

I agree on all points, and if Angel didn't appear in this season, perhaps it wouldn't have been so devastating for Buffy when

she finds out that he is Twilight

. Then again, that just works for Season 8. I doubt that Joss was thinking about this when he wrote "End of Days" and "Chosen" in Season 7.

The Amulet is what saved the day and got Spike to Angel (the show) so it seemed pretty important.

But most importantly Angel was there to remind everyone of who Buffy was really meant to be with.

I can see why people have a problem with Angel's return in season 7. In theory Buffy and Angel should have been further apart but theirs is one relationship which means they'll always be close in some capacity. As we saw in IWRY whenever they see each other them feelings come flashing back. The plan was for them feelings to slowly fade away but their attraction is so deep that it will never go away and hence why Angel was looking to restart their relationship in the future.

However it was strange seeing Angel so smitten around Buffy considering what had transpired between him and Cordelia. That for me didn't make sense. Most Bangel fans will tell you though that they didn't care if the actions of Angel were a bit strange. All they wanted to see was another Bangel moment before the show ended and they didn't care about the circumstances. Give them a tender moment reminsiscent of the good old days of season 3 and it would bring a smile to their face.:smile3:

The only thing that Angel's presence in S7 served was to hand over the amulet that proved to play a major role for Spike . . . both on "BUFFY" and "ANGEL".

His attitude toward Buffy, especially after what he had experienced with Cordelia, Connor and Jasmine, really did not make much sense to me. It felt tacked on.
