Since I don't read the comics, I'm not very aware of what happened to Angel post S5 and I was hoping someone would enlighten me. In the comics forums I can only find brief recaps of the issues but nothing really specific about the character. Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place!
Just to be clear, I'm not interested in the plot per se but rather Angel himself: character development, emotional state, relevant relationships, Buffy mentions (I'm a Bangel 😉), etc. Also, feel free to share your personal opinions regarding the character.
Thanks!

Well, currently, I think Angel is very much like he was on early seasons of Angel. (This is just my opinion.) Angel starts out the comics with an antagonistic relationship with Buffy. There is some contact with Buffy and I think it's clear he still loves her but nothing comes out of it, because either Angel has done something terrible or Buffy is with Spike at the time. He has a very colleague-ial relationship with Faith. I guess he is learning to be part of a new team and open up to that team.

Well AtF Angel is awesome. Then he gets character assasinated for the stupidity of Twilight and AtS as we know it is utterly non-existant. While I only partially read A&F S9 Gage had a firm grasp of Angel, Faith and the A/F dynamic. Sadly they pretty much set Angel back to S1 AtS Angel, complete with A&F S9 ending exactly like 'City Of...'. Read the Angel comics punlished IDW and keep it at that. If you are an Angel fan then the utter destruction of his character in the DH Buffy S8 comics will just make you angry. You could read A&F though I guess.

If you're a fan of any character other than Willow, Faith or Xander, S8 will probably piss you off.

I agree with most of the opinions here. If you can pretend that BtVS S08 didn't happen in that form, you'll enjoy A&F very much. You could say Gage made the best of the remaining pieces of Angel's character he got. It's, like RomanticSoul said, pretty much a reset though.

As for Bangel; it plays a strong part in mentioned stupidity in the end of BtVS S08. After that it's pretty much dead and mainly about Spuffy. However, it's rather an improvement for Angel's character imo.
