Angel in the Frayverse
A fanfic season six

I

Vrill and Boluz

Consider something as simple as an egg; simple in design and concept, yet also a creation of symetrical perfection willed to existence through a pattern that governs the presence of all that is. A tiny particle of matter governed by, and contributing to the infinite business of creation.

It did not exist. Then it did. The cosmic magic act. But there's no such thing as magic, is there?

The egg conforms to rules, (laws even), that demand it be created and continue to exist according to their edict.

Remove the egg from it's matrix...insist it no longer conform to the law of the pattern of the universe, and it rots. It degenerates into entropy.

The human senses are patterned in their nature to revolt from entropy. Rot revulses. The odor sickens.

Such an odor permeated the dimension of Vrill and Boluz. It lived there thick as syrup.

This was a world of screams. A world where the living came to rot and the rot devoured. Upon their arrival in the world of Vrill and Boluz, the living met a different kind of law - the law of entropy. It was the law that governed their disintegration into chaos.

The world of screams was not a place of created structure. There were no buildings. There was no discenible order to it's arrangements. It was a world of holes and caves, where demons lived in entrails, or rested amongst the scavenged wreckage of other worlds.

This was a world where the lost woke to find themselves instantly devoured, or clawing into cliffs with bleeding fingernails, fashioning the caves that formed the palace of Vrill and Boluz. Their blood added to the aeons long collection of dried blood on the walls.

***

Boluz woke to the sound of such scraping, as a human might wake to the chirrup of crickets.

He woke in a world of eternal darkness. Yet even in this world amongst such as Vrill and Boluz there were laws. The needs of the senses must be pampered. Appetites must be quelled. The darkness must be lit for Vrill and Boluz to see.

Orbs tangled from the broken staffs of the lost. Within the orbs shone their scavenged souls. The orbs tangled there like Japanese laterns.

Boluz woke and stabbed his fat finger into the large hirsute hole of what for him was a nose. He withdrew a large string of gooey slime, and smeared it onto the arm of his rock throne where it shimmered moist onto the pile of dried mucous below it.

The tiny slats that housed the black eyes of Boluz opened. Black drool expelled from his mouth, and slithered down the naked yellow mound of a single, huge mammalian breast. He shifted his weight, and the rolls of yellow fat that shaped his stomach responded to the rules of the demon dimension's reality, jiggling and rippling down the expanse of his immense girth

"Cook" he hollered, "bring me a fat little boy".

I should tell you a couple of things first, I guess.

First of all the basic premise for this is based on an idea I pilfered from a post by Allycat.

Also, just in case you miss the reference, 🙂 Vrill and Boluz are the two demon lords of a hell dimension that mess with human reality in Fray.

The thin, green-skinned Pylean demon shuffled in. A drop of moisture hung jiggling from her long, aquiline, green nose, and threatened to drop into her beard.

She shuffled into the hall pulling a wheeled dinner cart that squeaked behind her. Chains bound her ankles, rattling against the stone floor, and joined the cacophony. The metal clasps chafed into her green skin. Blood bled onto the rags that wrapped her feet.

"It is here, master. It is here".

"Describe it to me", demanded Boluz.

"The runt of my litter, oh great and ravenous one, cured and wormed in the twin suns of Pylea."

She pushed the large cart in front of the massive yellow bulk of Boluz, and removed the lid to the tray.

The fat taloned hands of Boluz ripped into the flesh of the meal before him, stuffing the maggoted strips past his thin yellow lips, to the gnashing rows of pointed, blackened teeth.

"Runt!!!" he yelled, "What mean you, runt? What of the large fat one?"

"He lives to serve you great one".

"He lives to feed me. Prepare it".

The Pylean backed away from him head bowed, nodding and whimpering quietly.

"And send me Vrill" trumpeted Boluz, mouth still full.

She lifted one shaking hand, and without raising her whiskered chin from her chest pointed to the balcony behind Boluz that looked out onto the Hell world.

There stood a thin naked creature. The skin appeared red, but it was dark. Light from the pools of magma below, and the soul lanterns in the hall played on the lithe shape of Vrill. His disproportionately large head was turned from Boluz looking upwards.

"What a wretched wakening". rasped Vrill with a sardonic glee.

"There is pleasure in your voice. Why such pleasure?" demanded Boluz.

"Hope. I sense hope."

"Hope? From them?" Boluz pointed a single black, talon skyward. "How can that please you."

"Hope" answered Vrill "Yet despair is inevitable."

Boluz munched away, and nodded in agreement hoping to give the appearance of one who thought thoughts.

"Shall we play with one of our guests a smit, while we wait?" teased Vrill.

"Let's eat them", answered Boluz.

"And this is your solution to everything, isn't it?"

Vrill turned smiling, his eyes large and black, almost insectoid in appearance.

Boluz appeared once more to be thinking on the words of Vrill, then answered, "Well yes".

"Not at this time fat one. They are protected for now... Yet this is a meal we both shall savour over time. I in my way. You in yours.

"My way is to eat them", said Boluz.

"I'm aware of that" answered Vrill.

He turned and walked out onto the rock walkway at the hall entrance. Below him molten rock sizzled. Above him there was darkness save for one point of blue light in what appeared to be a black sky, like a single star.

"Bring them closer" said Vrill.

Boluz lifted his hand and waved it skyward, without looking away from his meal, smacking, slurping, munching away with single-minded determination.

The light grew larger as whatever caused it came closer.

"Of themselves, vampires make an inferior meal" mused Boluz "but if one keeps the head intact and peels them away in strips they can add to a dish as an interesting seasoning."

"Yes, yes" muttered Vrill to himself, "There may be use to these three yet".

He stared upwards to the light which now appeared as a shape. It was a square, metal cage, engulfed in blue light.

Within the cage were three figures, two dressed in black, one with bleached, white hair. They sat loafing on the floor of the cage - waiting. A blue haired woman dressed in what appeared to be skin tight, red vinyl, stood above them cocking her head at her surroundings.

THE SP (?) CAPTURED THE SURVIVNG MEMBERS OF AI!!!

Damn... You're pessimistic or something, aren't you?

Be patient. Things aren't always as they first seem. There's more to come.

Three Heros in a Blue Cage

"You ran".

Spike sat on the floor of the cage, leaned back against the bars smoking a cigarette.

"I can't believe your ran".

Angel also sitting on the floor looked slowly over, interupted from what seemed to be deep thought.

"What?"

"I always had a kind of respect...no wait...that's a lie. I always knew you were a bit of a git, but I never thought you'd run."

"I didn't run." snapped Angel, "We escaped".

The blue-haired woman stood above the two reclining vampires, thin and slender, but exuding power.

"I have lived since the dawn of life, traversed the infinite dimensions from the Hell of Gornak to the pleasure domes of Vah'la nesh, but never before have I escaped into prison."

____________

The three strode out of the Hyperion alleyway certain death before them in the form of the Demon legions of Vrill and Boluz. Taloned beasts flew above them.

The tips of Angels black trenchcoat fluttered behind him in the night breeze, as he walked.

"Wait" called the brown skinned human from behind them. He knelt on one knee raising his hand toward them, "I'm coming".

But he was not. He could not. He knew he could not, yet he refused to aknowledge the fact. It was as Illyria had said. He would soon die. There was no alternative.

Angel strode in the lead. The white-haired vampire in the knee-length black leather jacket strode behind and to the right of him, the blue-haired demon God to his left.

Angel's pace quickened...faster...faster. The two behind him kept pace. To the human eyes of the dying Charles Gunn they became a blur. The last thing he saw he did not believe.

The leader he followed to this alley of his death. This champion who's one constant and undeniable virtue was his courage, reached the end of the alley, turned and disappeared from the fight in a black blur.

"No..." begged Gunn, then fell and died

__________

"But you ran, man. How could you run".

"Look I didn't run OK. There was a way...a way to maybe put things right, something I couldn't say, because saying it, saying it anywhere was just saying too much. Do you understand?"

"But you were going to slay the dragon." whimpered Spike.

"Spike slayed the dragon" said Illyria.

______________

Illyria raised her arms at full flight. The impact appeared to hit the wall of demons before the blow. They tumbled, or flew back like giant fleshy bowling pins with a thunderous THWWWHAAACK.

Spike lept at the alley exit, projected himself arrow straight, whizzing through a hole in the demon ranks, tumbling and rising to his feet in one movement he found himself in the center of the confused fray.

"Thanks Mate" he said removing a battle-axe from a warriors grasp, he knelt quickly then with one wide sweeping swipe hacked three demon warriors free of their legs at the Ankles.

_______________

"What?" asked Angel.

"Spike slayed the dragon", answered Illyria.

________________

Spike rose hacking and slashing. He heard the crushing and snapping of bones, heard the death cries of Illyria's foes to his left.

"Now this is more like it." laughed Spike, observing the chaos about him, as the demons losing sight of their opponents in the confusion of battle fell upon each other.

Just then a swath was cutting through the ranks of the horde. They fell away in a single straight line. He heard the sound of bodies knocked away by something large. There was a whoosh from above, and Spike suddenly found himself soaring above the city streets, something pointed and painful was piercing his chest and back. He looked upwards to see the chest and long reptilian neck of the dragon. It looked back and downwards at it's prey, then bent it's neck so it's large armored head faced towards Spike. It opened its beak sharpened like twin blades. The breath was impossibly foul.

Just then Spike heard a familiar sound. He knew he'd heard it before, but couldn't immediately place it. It was loud, louder even than the deafening whishing of wind. It roared and whizzed. It was mechanical.

The dragon raised it's long neck to see what shared it's sky, and instantaneously the neck and head vanished in the night. Black blood gushed like a fountain from the stub of the dragon's neck. The talons released their grip. Spike dropped his battle-axe, raised his arm and grabbed onto the dieing beasts leg. The wings fluttered out of memory. The giant, headless, fluttering body of the dragon spiralled downwards carrying it's cargo like some kind of grotesque black parachute.

Spike gazed upwards.

"Oh right", he thought, "helicopter".

The police chopper careened out of controll and smashed into a large building beside where the office of Wolfram and Hart used to be. It exploded there in a ball of flame.

_____________

"You slayed the dragon?" asked Angel, seeming a little hurt.

"Well, yeah, kinda" answered Spike.

______________

Spike released his grip and fell the last fifteen feet. He tumbled and rolled, coming to a full stop landing in a sitting position with his legs spread.

"Glad no-one's around to see this last bit", he thought to himself.

Before him Spike heard the sound of battle. A writhing, chaotic mass of warriors hacked and slashed at a foe that wasn't there.

Amazingly the fluttering dead body of the dragon had returned Spike to where they'd began.

Spike rose and ran towards the fray.

Wasn't he hanging on to his last breath? Hang on, I'm going to go check.

Wow.. you popped out of nowhere! I don't know... I forgot... I try to forget the fact that WB KILLED ANGEL!

Well I know Joss did say Gunn is now dead, but here's the last we see of him on screen:

Angel looks at the approaching crowd. It's hundreds, if not thousands, of demons of all sorts, shapes and sizes. A huge winged dragon flies angrily toward them overhead.

GUNN
OK. You take the 30,000 on the left...

ILLYRIA
You're fading. You'll last 10 minutes at best.

GUNN
(stands)
Then let's make 'em memorable.

Angel steps forward and Spike, Gunn and Illyria follow. Spike is standing off to Angel's right side. Angel is flanked a step behind by Gunn on the right and Illyria on the left. They stare at the horde of demons approaching them in the alley.

Oh... I vaguely remember them starting to fight... Well, I'm retarded so pay no attention to me.

Wow... they killed all those demons in less than 10 minutes!? Cool!

Not at all. You crack me up MP. 🙂 You keep assuming stuff. It's like you're writing the next chapter ahead of me. I worry I'm going to disappoint you when you discover what I really have in mind.

But please stay with me OK? Cause I think it's just you and me here, and although I will just write to myself for fun, it's more fun with company.

Escape

Spike padded towards the battle, down the deserted street.

The battle raged ahead of him, demon now fighting demon, or standing back wondering what to do.

All at once a circle of free space appeared to be opening up in the centre of the writhing mass of demons. The circle moved slowly towards Spike.

The wall of demons parted, and Spike saw Illyria twirling like a top. Suspended from her double grasp was a large, gray demon, in chest mail. It was about twice the size of the creature that held and spun it.

The spinning Illyria reached the end of the battle barrier, released the demon she held and let it fly. It skidded towards Spike, the chain mail scraping, and sparking, against the pavement.

Illyria strode towards her battle companion. Spike slowed and walked towards her. They met in the middle. The demon horde slowly ceased their battle, and stood there puzzled as to what to do next.

"Well, well" said Spike, "We're having fun, aren't we?"

"This pleases me", replied Illyria.

Spike opened his mouth to quip, but suddenly there was no point.

A deafening scraping squeal, like metal against metal but magnified a thousand fold erupted in the street.

The 2 looked about to discover it's cause.

Angel walked slowly from the entrance to the Hyperion, a small bronzish disc suspended before him in one hand. In the other he held a book. He appeared to be reciting from the book, loudly, yet neither Spike nor Illyria heard what he called. The squeal was too loud.

Angel gradually moved between the other two. He raised his head from the book, leaned towards first Spike, then Illyria and hollered, "Follow me!!!".

_____________________

Angel rose to his feet in the glowing, blue cell. Spike remained semi-reclined on the floor and against the bars.

"Hey I got a question" he said from that position, and took a drag of his smoke, "Who asked you for your help anyway. Me n the girl were doing just fine till you pranced back."

"You didn't have to come".

"Yeah right, and let you sneak off to where all the good stuff is. I don't like not knowing stuff you do. Doesn't sit well is all. Might come back to bite my ass." he looked around, "Witness..."

"Hey if you don't like it, leave."

"Leave...yeah, right"

"You know escape, or something".

"To where? Down there?"

Illyria looked down to the volcanic world where demons with multiple appendages skittered about.

"I have no wish to destroy these sad creatures", she said, "they are beneath my touch."

"Literally," said Spike.

"I await a more worthy adversary".

"How do you know that's coming?" asked Spike.

As if on cue he felt a tingling, and saw his two cellmates engulfed in orange plasmish light.

"Shouldn't of said that" commented Spike.

It was the last thing any of them would say from the confines of the cage.

The Council of Five

There's only 2 or 3 things you'll need as reference I think:

1. Vrill and Boluz appeared to be the masters of a Demon dimension that had interest in human reality.

2. The Mage and the Lorranites (hope I spelled that right. Have to double-check) banished the original demons, or what are sometimes called the old ones on Buffy/Angel, from human reality in the days before recorded human history.

Oh, one more thing might factor into it. Vampires are not pure demon. Well, we knew that from Buffy 7, right. They're seen more as a disease in Fray.

Yeah, I knew those.... Kind of. I just assumed that Vrill and Boluz wanted to go to earth (er, human dimensions) and eat them or something.

Wait.. who's Magi and Lorranites or are those characters that's going to be introduced later?

It's never really explained what Vrill and Boluz's exact plans are for Earth. They appear to have some kind of not so nice confrontation in mind between demons and humans, but it's never told what exactly that is, or why they want it.

The Vrill and Boluz of Fray have a similar Modus Operandi to the Senior Partners of Angel in that they plan things far in advance.

It's never explained exactly what a Magi or a Lorranite is. We can guess they're pretty powerful though, because they did banish the original demons from Earth.

Here's another chapter for ya. You're close to the point where you can figure out what's actually going on

-----------------

The Council of Five

The hall of Vrill and Boluz fizzed into existence before the eyes of Angel, Spike and Illyria.

Vrill stood. Boluz remained sitting in his stone throne. He leaned over his huge stomach, put two clawed hands on the dinner cart and rocketed it across the stone floor. It hit a rock and flew the last ten feet against the wall with a loud smash.

"Retribution!", he thundered.

Vrill stood next to Boluz watching his adversaries materialize at the entrance to the outside walkway.

"Truly" said Vrill, "Where did you get the idea of retribution."

Angel and Illyria looked around trying to get their bearings, Illyria cocking her head rapidly, like a blue headed owl.

"It is we who should demand retribution" bellered Boluz.

"You would think so, wouldn't you?" said Vrill, humour in his voice, "we are the wronged party here. It is our emissaries that were cruely, unjustly, and brutally murdered".

Angel smiled. He leaned over to help Spike up from the stone floor where he materialized sitting. Spike refused and rose effortlessly.

"What do you know about justice?" demanded Angel.

"That is a question soon to be answered, isn't it boy?" answered Vrill, "but why retribution, how could you possibly have known that was the one demand that might get you an audience before the council?"

"Read it in a book somewhere" replied Angel with mirth.

"Ah yes", said Vrill, "our book. What have you done with our book?"

Spike looked over to Illyria, "Any idea, what they're talking about, love?" he asked.

Illyria listened to the question then looked away bored, seemingly more interested in the vermin that scurried about the spilt dinner cart, gathering scraps, and scampering back into cracks in the walls.

"Oh you remember the book Spike", said Angel, "the one we stole from Wolfram and Hart, the one with all the demon lore, talk of the old ones, deeper well, all that?"

"Yeah right, never got a good look at that one", said Spike a bit petulant.

"Well I did" Angel butted in, "turns out there's some interesting stuff in there stuff about employer, employee grievances, trials, and oh yeah, retribution".

"And where is our book", growled Vrill now seeming to lose patience.

But Angel continued "interesting story how we came by that book. Turns out we weren't the only disgruntled employees. You remember Eve right? See that's the problem with hiring the evil. You can't trust em."

"Where is the book?"

"Tricky thing about interdimensiol portals and books. They don't seem to like each other. I lose more damned books that way".

"So you have no idea how to proceed then", purred Vrill the ends of his thin red mouth curling up into what looked like a sly grin.

"Well, I do have this" said Angel. He presented the bronze disk before them, "coat of arms isn't it? Got it the last time I was at a mystic trial. I got to fight that time. Is that the way it works this time. Do I fight somebody? Hope it's you tubby", Angel said to Boluz.

Boluz hissed and snapped out a rapidly vibrating black, forked tongue. Another set of arms with clattering claws slithered out from the layer of fat.

"That", said Vrill, "was the Tribunal. That's small claims" he chuckled, "daddy's going to take you to the big show this time boy".

"That right?" said Spike, "I want a attorney".

Angel looked at him disgusted.

"Well never hurts to ask, does it"

Angel just shook his head.

Vrill turned his back to them. "Representatives are available upon request. Such is the demand of the council."

"Ya see." said Spike. "Who can we have then? Living or dead? I want Daniel Webster."

"He's not available. Pick another"

Spike dropped his jaw astounded. He didn't know there really was a Daniel Webster. Did that mean there really was a devil also?

"We want two said Angel; Charles Gunn, and Wesley Wyndham Price."

"Charles Gunn will await you at trial" said Vrill turning back to them once more with the grin not in the least bit surprised by Angel's request.

"And Wesley?" asked Illyria, as if from nowhere suddenly involved in the conversation.

"He is unfortunately beyond our reach. You'd have better luck getting that Webster fellow."

The hall was now silence, nothing more to say to each other they all five gazed at nothing in particular as if the nothingness had meaning. Then Angel turned to Spike.

"Gunn?" said Angel.

"Charlie boy." mused Spike.

"You will appear before the Council of Five upon there arrival. Come Boluz" said Vrill and clacked walking from the room in a stooping lope on armoured insect feet.

Boluz, shifted his elphantine girth extending his two sets of arms from the rippling lard. The front most were talons, the middle set claws, behind them was a stubby set of rhinocerous like legs. He lumbered after Vrill on those six appendages like a giant, legged, yellow maggot.

Wait... so Vrill is higher than Boluz and Boluz is some sort of shape shifter or something?

Damn it! I need those Fray comics... Don't understand any of this... NEED PICTURES!

A shapeshifter? Man I must be doing something wrong if I gave you that impression. No he's not a shapeshifter.

I think Boluz is described in Fray as a "maggot ridden lake of flesh".

Actually...think Jabba the Hut from the Star Wars films, but yellow, without a tail, and with a small bulbous, bald head.
You never see a full view of Boluz in Fray. I gave him the extra set of arms and rhinocerous like hind legs. I decided to have him walk on six legs like a bug, but when he sits, his form looks humanoid, yet obese. In Fray bugs crawl out his mouth.

Here you go. Check em out.
