This has been bugging me. On a Buffy rewatch (yet again 😉) and...

Okay so having watched the entire series twice (both) why are Earth was that little talk from Darla enough for Angel to want to kill Buffy? It doesn't make any sense at all given all of the back story we get later on. I know probably 95% of his history wasn't even thought up during this season, but I can't even come up with a decent fanwank, lol.

We've seen the effect Darla has on Angel in Season 2 of AtS, but still even here just the simple "You're all alone. Kill her. blahblahblah" shouldn't have worked on him so quickly. He was just all ready & willing to kill her after that.

Yeah he is very easily convinced here but then I suppose he got caught up in the misery of his situation - thinking she would never love him back, being natural enemies, probably feeling pretty shitty about how much Buffy must've hated him for thinking he had bit her mom (wanting to bite her mom) etc etc...

He was a pretty lonley guy at that point after all 🙂

I know season one gets a pretty bad rep but I honestly think this episode along with Prophecy Girl are two of the best the series has ever offered, certainly both in my top ten. The end scene with Wild Horses playing, the Buffy/Angel kiss and the cross being burnt into Angel's chest is in my opinion the most romantic thing I've ever seen on television and has such a wonderful atmosphere. It never fails to make me smile and when I'm feeling venerable, tear up. Words cannot express the impact that scene had one me.

I loved this episode, Bangel was one of the best things that ever happened on the show. But i still have to wonder, when they were fighting the three, didn't buffy notice that angel was exceptionally strong? I guess she could be lost in the thrill of the fight, but still.....

and I never understood how vampires could bleed. You can argue that the blood came from the drinking, but then if the hearts not beating, wouldn't it stink like hell? and why would they be crazy pale? so confusing...but i LOVE it.

1. Well he was strong, but there were always humans that could hold up in fights with vampires or demons. Just look at Riley or Gunn.

2. I'd say they still have some of their own blood. Being pale doesn't mean your blood is completey drained, couldn't it also mean you just don't have enough blood cells?

I love how Buffy rambles on and on about Achmed and water under the bridge just before Angel kisses her. It's adorably girlish.

This is actually one of my favorite episodes from Season One, even though I've rewritten it in my head countless times. I wanted more smoochies!!!

Can we just agree that this episode is adorable? Even if you don't like Bangel, you can't deny That this episode is cute. Buffy has a school girl crush. We've all been there. The speech about her diary made me bust out laughing.

This might well be my favorite episode of the entire Buffyverse. I've seen it so many times that I pretty much have it memorized. I used to play it in my head when I was bored at my retail job.

- Angel says that he hasn't fed on a living human since the day he was cursed with a soul. But, we find out later in "Angel" that he fed off of criminals for a while to try to pretend like he was still evil. He even turned a man in a flashback to WWII. However, it is possible that Angel just didn't want to get into an explanation about this.

Point of clarification: Angel says he hasn't fed off living humans, not that he hasn't killed. In the Boxer Rebellion, he killed criminals, yes, but no dialogue indicated that he actually fed off him. What we do know is that he would sneak away from Darla to go feed off rats, and why on earth would he do that if he were already nice and full from rapist blood? Also, he didn't bite Lawson to feed off him, he bit him to turn him. So the only (canonical) case of him feeding off of a living human being for actual nourishment purposes was that one flashback in "Five by Five" when he bit that lady in Borsa (probably within a week or two of getting his soul). Still, he didn't even drink enough to make her pass out before he stopped and stumbled away, saying, "I can't. Oh, God, I can't." I'm not terribly inclined to hold that one against him, as far as the statement he made in "Angel" goes. Overall, this is still a case of continuity fail, not of Angel being a liar.

He was angry believing that the person that he decided to join the world for, to become a person for, the girl that he has loved from afar for over a year, was sickened by him, saw him as an evil thing. He didn't know she threatened him just because he was holding her bleeding-from-the-neck mother while in vamp face and assumed he had attacked her.

Agreed. Buffy was his symbol of hope, and he believed that she hated him and wanted him dead. I don't think he would have killed her; after all, he was barely trying in that fight, and he left himself wide open for her to take her shot. But then, when she let him explain, dropped her crossbow, approached, and bared her neck to him, that restored his hope that everything Whistler said about what he could become was true, and then some (which he demonstrated by killing Darla, something he hadn't been willing to do before). If the Slayer could extend trust and mercy (let alone love) to him, then maybe he was a person to be counted after all.
