Angel is not an original chararcter

I don't have a problem with that. The Buffyverse in general is a cultural soup. There may very well be a little Anne Rice in there.

But if you're saying there couldn't be Angel without Anne Rice, I'd beg to differ.

Hey...wouldn't it be cool if Anne Rice wrote an Angel episode?

No of course not Angel could be made without there being any Interview with the vampire. However like I said in the beginning Im being honest with you guys and thats what I felt. I really do feel that Angel got some inspiration or you could say influence from Louis in Interview with the Vampire
But don't get me wrong I love Angel and Buffy the Vampire slayer but you have to wonder where Joss gets some of his ideas.
And thanks for the sarcasm

Really...you saw sarcasm. I apologize.

You should have seen the original post, I posted. I went back and edited it. I thought I got all the sarcasm out. If you'd seen that one you would have made a little N4H voodoo doll, and poked pins in it.

Sincerely though...I don't have a problem with what you personally are saying.

My problem was with where the thread seemed to be going.

It was heading in the direction of "Whedon stole Angel from Rice". You'll have to admit, the title of this thread encourages this. I realize now, that isn't what you actually believe.

I won't be subtly sarcastic about that concept though. I'll put my feelings concerning the idea "Whedon stole Angel from Rice" in black and white.

The idea is stupid.

Hi again Nerd4hire
Nice to hear from you okay, so I admit the thread's title is giving the message that Joss stole the idea but hey how else would I have got everyong's attention towards this thread. If I put "I do not think that Angel is a original character".Then I guess no one would have noticed it.
And I also admit that the thread is heading is going in the direction of "Whedon Stole Angel from Rice" so I guess I went a little overboard in the dicussion but again this is a disscusion and so that is bound to happen.
And apology is accepted for your sarcasm
Thank you

Okay, insperation is the key word here.Every thing inspires something...

That actually is kinda a true however more than Claudia Blake I feel that Drusilla is loosely modelled more after Akasha. Don't you think so?
If you think about it, Akasha actually was weak. She believed in her own lies because she could never accept the truth. To me, that's weak... The only reason she's 'powerful', is because she's the first vampire, with Amel's core inside her...
Also the way she used Lestat, either. He's so strong and for someone to try and use him like that, well, it's selfish and petty and pathetic. And that whole killing the males thing was just moronic.
This sounds similar to how Drusilla used to treat Spike as she used to make him to everything that would make her happy.
Although if you read the part where,(i think it was lestat) met Armand with that crazy mad female vampire (ancient) makes me think where they got the idea for Drusilla as they have a lot dellusional female vamps in the chronicles

The 'rapists, theives and murderers' thing was really Lestat's trademark. Louis lacked the ability to read minds, so he wouldn't really know someone was a Rapist without actually catching them in the act. Lestat on the other hand, he was able to tell right away, and fed gleefully on evil-doers. It was Lestat' grand solution to the moral quandry that he was merely the wolf culling the herds of evil, and by being thouroughly wicked himself, but only to evil-doers, he somehow came out as balanced in the grand scheme of things. The Savage Garden, he referred to it, where even Vampires can have a place in all their glory and predatory instinct, without being immoral. Louis was mainly just a rat-killer, and since he didn't know that Lestat had selected only the evil as his victims, Louis assumed from Lestat's evident enjoyment of his lifetaking that Lestat was an evil monster. And Lestat, being who he was, was too proud to explain himself.

But this makes me wonder why the writers have avoided actually having Angel take human life onscreen. We hear that he used to dine on thieves and murderers and such, but we never really see this, other than from a historical perspective. Did the writers shy away from the moral ambiguity of it? We often see Angel killing an evil man, but we never seem to see him 'drink him dry'. Is it that he fears the human blood will become addictive, or is it that the writers don't feel the audience will make a distinction?

I think we've seen a couple of times what human blood can do to Angel. It becomes addictive to him. I think hes afraid that if he actually feeds off of someone, even if they were a bad person, he will want human blood again. I think the audience can make the distinction in most cases, but it think its Angel's fears that cause him to not feed off of those people.

Yes, it's a good argument.

On the other hand, it might also have to do with the Angel classic approach that no one is irredeemable, even Lindsey, for example. So maybe it's just a matter of not actually killing someone unless they are directly about to visit harm on someone else, since that someone may still turn from their 'wicked ways'.

Or maybe it's a combination of the two.

to be honest i have had suspicions about joss and ann since buffy first started🙂 i recon they have a mutual fan attraction for each others work, joss definately knows the vampire chronicles inside out as there are too many quotes aimed at and mentioning ann rice's vampires..
i do believe that all writters are inspired by each other and take ideas to the next level everyday...
one day it will come out the link between buffy/angel and all of ann rice's chartacters, perhaps joss is one of ann's ex b.f's!!
you can analise it to the extreme as i have done on many an occasion, but please dont judge the comparrasons with those poor films about lestat, read the books🙂
you can easily compare louis to angel and lestat to angelus if you wish to or even dru to akasha and pandora to darla, possibly even the powers that be to the book Memnoch etc etc there are many similarities and i do believe there is a direct link but when we will find out the truth god only knows🙂
to put a bigger spin on it what about a loose conection with charmed to the mayfair withces(esp the new charmed series)...

I think that Joss might have got a bit of inspiration for a vamp with a soul but Louis is different from angel. He had not changed completely... he still had an ounce of humanity in him and that's why it tortured him so much to kill humans! He eventually lost that when he sired Claudia's new friend! He did not have all his soul.

Liam lost his soul completely when he was sired and Angelus became the scourge of Europe straight away... starting with his family. He only lost his soul because of Gypsies! And Gypsies were not part of Interview with a vampire!

You are right

Foi, you are right when you read the Anne Rice books there is just too much similarity between Anne's Characters and Joss's. I think nobody notices because only 2 of Anne Rice's books have been shown on the silver screen, and the other characters like Pandora have not been shown on the screen. So peopl do not really notice that the characters have been copied.
But when you talk about Angelus being like Lestat, I would not say Lestat but I woul say Spike.
The reason being is that Lestat is supposed to be a rebel, different from the other vampires. All the othe vampires have a dislike towards him, beacuse the vampires are supposed to live in the shadows and he chooses not to.
This is similar to Spike , so okay he is not a goth rocker but he is a punk rock vampire. Spike is a rebel vampire, before Spike was made into a vampire the rule was that only the slayer could kill a vampire. Spike broke that rule and made it possible for a vampire to kill a slayer.
And if you wath the Buffy episode Fool for love, you will notice that Spike and Angel have an Arugment that because Spike is killing so much and having so mny fights that people are noticing them as vampires and they are getting caught.
This exactly what happens in the book Vampire Lestat, Marius comes to Lestat and tells him that vampires should live in the shadows otherwise they will be caught.
Plus his relaitionship with Drusilla, is like I mentioned before just like the relaitionship with Lestat and Akasha. Dru was a dellusional vampire who used Spike for her own advantage. Akasha is the same She believed in her own lies because she could never accept the truth. Also the way she used Lestat, either. He's so strong and for someone to try and use him like that, well, it's selfish and petty and pathetic. And that whole killing the males thing was just moronic.
This sounds similar to how Drusilla used to treat Spike as she used to make him to everything that would make her happy.
According to me
Lestat=Spike
Pandora=Darla
Louis=Angel
Drusiila=Akasha
