Now, I know Buffy is the only thing that gave Angel perfect happiness in the last 200 years or so. But do you think there's anything in the world besides Buffy that can make Angel lose his soul by experiencing perfect happiness?

There was having sex with Cordelia in his dream. Might not count, since he could have been thinking about Buffy.

I used to find it odd that Connor didn't make him that happy, but it makes sense (when you fanwank).

The first time he lost his soul in the afterglow, the other time, mid-orgasm. I first thought "okay, orgasm, then all the world's problems disapears and you can be happy, even just for a sec" but then I remembered how it worked in Suprise. Still, I think it applies.

To feel perfect happiness, you need to feel a complete lack of pain. It has nothing to do with how happy you are. I'm think that Angel felt more happy when he hel Connor in his arm than when he was with Buffy, but he was also more worried when he had Connor in his arms than when he was with Buffy, because he thought about how Connor could get hurt.

That's the theory I'm sticking with anyway.

Me too, only explanation for me is that his birth which should have been a pure happiness moment was also very sad because of Darla's sacrifice.

Also because of all the chaos going on at the time: Holtz, W&H and all the other factions after the baby at the time.

In his dream/fantasy in Awakening, I think it was the entire scenario that lead to the moment of happiness, not just sex with Cordelia (fighting & destroying the Beast, acceptance by Connor, the whole AI gang working together, etc). With Buffy, it was his complete giving of himself (and she giving herself)- the first time in his entire life or unlife that he had ever done that.

And obviously a few very powerful people can extract his soul (and resoul him).

But when he lost his soul with Buffy, there was chaos going on also, what with the Judge, Spike and Dru. He and Buffy almost died, almost lost each other... How could Angel get perfect happiness then?

First time in a century makes for a lot of backed up happiness. :0

I think it was because she was the first person he ever loved. That made all the dif.
I think it had a lot to do with completely giving himself to her, like I said before. I don't know, just that Bangel "magic" I guess, heh-heh! 😉

Hmm...good question. I don't know. It depends on the circumstances. I'm surprised that baby Connor didn't too. I suppose the right person, the right experience, the right time. I don't know.

I was surprised that Baby!Connor didn't, to be honest.

I have no doubt that Connor brought Angel supreme joy but I also imagine the accompanying mind numbing fear that this tiny person is now utterly reliant on you (not to mention that Connor was being hunted by demon cults) was enough to keep perfect happiness from over taking Angel.

As for the OP's question, I think perfect happiness is utterly beyond Angel right now. Even with Buffy.

Because she loved him back. The one person in the world who was actually born to hate him, loved him. And he loved her. It must have blown his mind. His entire life (human and demon) he had been told he was worthless. He had spent the previous hundred years randomly falling in and out of society. Time and again been shunned by humanity and the demon life he had known. He was isolated and lived in misery and more to the the point he had no reason to hope that his next hundred, hell next thousand years would be any different. But Buffy came along and literally changed his world on its head. Even when he fell in love with her he did it fully believing that love never to be returned. On that night specifically, Angel had given Buffy a ring, that to him signified his belonging to her and her belonging to him. That was acceptance and a place in the world. It was everything to him. Them making love solidified that commitment. What Buffy gave Angel was hope, something he had never had, and that's why he lost his soul. He finally started believe that maybe even wretches like he could come of something.

I tend to think that this was a very specific moment and Angel was actually really naive and innocent. I don't know if that feeling could be repeated.

Honestly? No. I don't think there's any chance of it happening again. I'm inclined to agree with Wes;

Cordelia: He knows perfect happiness. He goes evil. So don't tell me not to worry.
Wesley: Angel's moment of true happiness occurred because he was with Buffy. Do you realize how rare that is? True happiness? And what are the odds he'd find it with an actress.

The reason that Angel doesn't experience a "moment of complete happiness" regarding Connor is as plain as the nose on Miss K's sweet, Bangel-loving face. The happiness that should have been associated with the birth of his son was dampened by the dread of just how badly Buffy was going to kick his a** if she found out that he had been messing around with Darla again.
