I like the idea of a Gunn/Illyria spin-off... I like the spin-offs in general though.
The art for this series doesn't seem too promising though; or maybe it's just the colors, I don't know.

I just finished number 1. It felt just like a spin off. I'm glad I know who these characters are, but soemone new to the Buffyverse might have needed back story, which would have really slowed down the pacing, but if someone really wanted to know what happened before, there's back issues and Wiki.
I like the story so far, though I'm hoping they will explain why Illrya won't changed into Fred, like she did the last time we saw Fred's parents. Remember, they don't know their daughter is dead.
The demons at the end kinda look like the ones Doyle died saving.

I agree all around.
The issue wasn't bad, but it was definitely weaker than any of Lynch's Angel comics. Illyria's drawn horribly here, imo.

Hmmm. Well I've only read up to issue #4 of 5, but I can give a quick rundown based on them.
It's good, not Joss Whedon or Brian Lynch good, but not too far off.
It accomplishes three things (without going into spoilery details):
1.) Illyria back-story (main theme)
2.) Gunn back-story
3.) Addresses the old question of "just how are The Scourge pure demon if the Old Ones were the last pure-bloods according to the Watchers, Illyria, and Anya"? The Scourge being the group that killed Doyle.
I found Only Human's response to #3 quite satisfying.
As Only Human is not canon, I thought exploring Gunn's origin a little moot, as no one's going to consider that his legit history in future Buffyverse books.
And Illyria's back-story brought about no big revelations, pretty much what everyone inferred (super-powerful Old One demon god...).
In terms of Illyria's back-story, I found Fallen Angel: Reborn to be a more entertaining read. It takes place during Angel S5, and is more-or-less a team-up between Illyria and "fallen" Supergirl. I never read a Fallen Angel/Supergirl comic in my life, but there was no learning curve. The two go on a quest to re-power Illyria, having to face her past demons.
Neither of these stories are of Lynch's caliber or necessarily canon, but I'd read Fallen Angel: Reborn (Illyria - "Fallen Angel : Reborn" Comic Book - TPB 1 - Available for order !) first, as it takes place first and is more entertaining. And then follow it up with Angel: Only Human.
That's my two-cents. Hope it helps 😉

Thanks Frketson! I think we're just both all-inclusive fans of the Buffyverse. Don't know about you, but the first comic I ever read was Buffy Season Eight #1

Okay, so I finally finished reading all of Only Human.
The end both exceeded my expectations and was a huge disappointment.
Where did it exceed my expectations?
Gunn's huge inner-monologue is excellent. Spot on Whedon/J. August, and this is a fantastic and expected indicator of how Gunn is coping After the Fall.
Where did it disappoint?
Illyria's treatment was okay here, far from bad, but it was almost like a heavily watered down version of her arc in Fallen Angel Reborn.
The bad guy dialog wasn't great either, a little stupid & cliched. But I have to assume that this was a conscious choice to make the bad guys that way, since the author clearly has the ability to write good dialogue.
Here's my huge gripe: without giving too much away, one of the major themes is that even evil demons have souls. That's simply not the case in the Buffyverse. Giles, Buffy, Angel, Spike, and Wes have all made big deals about how evil demons are soulless. And this book ends up making a big deal about the baddies in fact having souls.
I'd have a hard time recommending this, because at the end of the day, it's good fanfiction. Gunn's inner-monologue is a gem though.

All-in-all, I'd say that if there was a shortage of Buffyverse comics, definitely grab Only Human--because at the very least, it's entertaining.
But since there's a bit of material out there, I'd keep this on my list, but down towards the bottom.
Fallen Angel Reborn was no After the Fall, but seeing Illyria without Wes, Spike, or Gunn to temper her was pretty interesting. Also the Fallen Supergirl vs. Illyria fight was pretty sweet 🙂
And the Lorne book was just very touching.
I remember you said that you had Shadow Puppets, but I don't recall you mentioning Asylum. I'd say Asylum's arguably Lynch's better book (of those two).
Anyway, here's the order in which I'd buy/read these comics:
- Spike: Asylum
- Fallen Angel Reborn
- Lorne Special Edition
- Angel Only Human
That's close to being chronologically correct. I just bumped the Lorne book above Only Human because it's more worthwhile. The only reason I put it third down is because the first two take place a year earlier. Hope this helps 🙂
P.S.- I don't know if you stuck with the pseudo-canon IDW Angel series, but Brian Lynch returned to the title briefly after Aftermath ended (which I know you hated as much as I did). Angel: Boys and their Toys (#26 & 27) was just a fun standalone adventure for Angel, Spike, Groo, and Jeremy (Spike's human friend from Spike After the Fall).

To be honest i dont really get a chance to buy individual issues and have to wait for tpb's because i never have time to go to a comic book store and actually buy some. I really should and eventually i think i want to buy season 8 and atf and all of their individual issues (just for a collection).
Yeah i bought shadow puppets, but asylum was sold out on amazon so i never got a chance to buy it. However with the release of Spike: Omnibus that is included as well as a few others so i'm just going to get that.
I think i will get Fallen Angel: Reborn, simply due to the fact that i know the character as i have got the first 3 tpb's (due to someone on this board recommending it to me).
Yeah i definately will stick with it, even if i disliked aftermath i know it will get better from here. I've already got the next two HC volumes pre ordered 😀

I don't use a comic shop myself either. I use TFAW.com usually, which is the site that every Buffyverse fan seems to use. In a pinch (if sold out), I'll use Atlantis Comics & Games, which is about the same in price & reliability, but their website is nowhere near as nice or easy compared to TFAW. And on rare occasions I'll go the Amazon route, but for these comics, Amazon is more expensive 95% of the time.
Personally, I think you have the right idea with buying the volumes. I'd much rather have books than flimsy comics which I wound up keeping in a binder, because I don't know what else to do with them, haha. But I don't have the patience to wait for the TPBs :embarrassed:
I wouldn't get my hopes up too much for the ongoing Angel series. Don't get me wrong, it's better than Aftermath, but the current producer, Bill Willingham, seems to have trouble writing for Angel & Spike. He really nails Connor & Kate's voices, and does a fair job with the rest of the crew, but surprisingly the two vamps are iffy. PLus Willingham blasted Joss recently, haha...

Yeah, i quite like having a collection of TPB's, it looks awesome on my bookshelf. TFAW is a site that i look at a lot, can they even ship to australia?
It kills me to have to wait for TPB's though, just now im ordering retreat (which will take a few weeks to arrive), i already knows what happens prety much from here to issue 33 (minus most of the dialogue).
Well willingham wont stay forever, and if he doesnt get better i;m positive the next writer will be. And Joss and co eventually need to marry up the two series so eventually i'm sure we'll see some Joss stories.
