Angel Or Riley

I have to say, despite my discussion with Joyce Summers about Riley being boring, whiny, and selfish, I've been rewatching season 4 (not on purpose, its just that my favourite funny episodes are in it) and, I'm getting to quite like Riley... its only when he gets to season 5 that he irritates me alot, but the bit that struck me was in Doomed, when he gets all passionate about not wanting to give up on them and stuff.

However, I have a similar problem (boring, whiny and selfish) with Angel (and before anyone thinks I'm favouring Spike too much, he has the same problem to an extent in season 7). I enjoyed Angel in Angel, and I like him as Angelus, but by and large, I thought he was so self-involved, mostly in season 3.

I think the whole idea of the epic love between two people whose fates force them to be apart is really good, and I love that whole aspect of Bangel, but I just never thought they suited.

Saying that, I think I'd choose Angel for Buffy to be with, mostly because instinctively I get annoyed when Angel or Buffy get with another guy (in either show.. I was especially annoyed at Angel and Cordy first time round) because I feel like its betraying their love (even though its not... its clearly a personal issue I have), and so she should never have gone on to Riley in the first place!! [Although I can't blame her for doing so, given the circumstances!].
 
I also recently watched S4 over again and I used to hate Riley so very much but he isnt a bad guy at all just as I think spike calls him "white bread", he is freakin captain america and though that isnt exactly boring it does lack any kind of spark that makes you need more. He just is kind of -there- and I think hes kind of cute, especially when he punches out Parker. Hes a simple guy but I dont really hate him so much as in a twisted way I almost adore him.

Though I am a diehard Bangel fan, and Angel is my boy forever, and how he is with Buffy is brilliant in what starts out as a puppydog love and then by the end of season 3 its a more grown up love for eachother and it isnt based on the fact that they are broken, or on the rebound or anything like Buffys other relationships (and I dont want anyone thinking I am anti-spike I love the guy but she was broken when their relationship started) Angel and Buffy just love eachother and though that would have gotten boring on the show if he hadnt left I still think thats who she should be with ... forever!

Ooh Riley leanage- I'm so pleased! Haha. And I love the way he is in Doomed. The boy fights for love and that's just darn swoonable. But yes, his attitude in season 5 whilst sometimes understandable can sometimes make you go 'Argh! Riley! What are you doing?'

Everything else that you said got me thinking. Whenever a guy is interested in Buffy they do get kinda whiny. Not always in a bad way, it just seems to be the way it goes. Once they meet Buffy, they're never the same. Almost as though Buffy drives them to the immaturity. Like Willow said- love makes you do the wacky. And these guys got hit by the Buffinator so they ended up even more wacked out than others. Haha. For Spike and Angel it was because she made them feel young and alive again, forgetting who, or rather what, they were. She loved them and this allowed them to forget all that and be happy about themselves, their unlife, everything- all which had been before denied to them. And I think that's what drives them to that level of immaturity/whininess/whatever you wanna call it.
As for Riley, Buffy was, in my opinion, his first love. Like Angel was Buffy's, Buffy was Riley's and it's this head-over-heels-I-didn't-know-I-could-feel-this-way love that drives him to immaturity/whininess/whaterver you wanna call it.

So really, any complaints anyone has about any of Buffy's love interests is really all Buffy's fault for causing them to be that way. Haha.
 
Riley is and always will be that transition boyfriend, he was never ment to play a big role in Buffy's life. He was that dorky cute guy that helped her try to get over Angel, which i dont think could ever happen 🙂 but he was there and in a way buffy being with this 'normal' guy was a way of letting herself know that she can have that... normal... maybe? but yeah go team ANGEL:: vampire
 
Really without a doubt Angel. But to be honest i did like Riley and Buffy when they were together, but no competition, Angel wins! they were true! i love Bangel!! but i did like Riley's character. But my answer is definitely Bangel with a thousand yard lead!! there really isn't a competition because, well there just cant be! its angel!!

Boy that's hard. Is it "mope mope mopey gasp brood mope"... or "I think this guy's mostly filler"?

Really, I'm very non-Bangel - I was so glad that Angel didn't carry that trademark gasp "Buffy..." over into his own series (at least, nowhere near on the regular basis that really, really tired me out in Buff S2/3)... and with Riley, well, I'm rewatching S5 atm and I still don't click with him, the least. I mean, I see him lifting off in that black heli and I think: "Erm, that's supposed to be emotional now, right?" while I simply can't fathom how it's supposed to make a difference if he's there or not.

Hey, can I say Spike? 🙂 I mean, while Spuffy never was a healthy relationship, the dynamic was about 1000000% more interesting than with Riley (if indeed there was "dynamic" there at all), and I really enjoy watching Spike extravertedly fighting himself over emotions he doesn't want, but can't deny he has... and it's never the mopey-broody-gaspy routine I had to endure with Bangel. Hey, even when Spike gets his soul back, he doesn't go mopey... he just goes incoherent for a while. Far more interesting.

It's PROBABLY just me, but I absolutely love Riley. To me Angel/Buffy was just way to romantic for me. Plus, Angel's a pansy. "Oh, look at me, I'm leaving because it will NEVER work." Oh, just shut the hell up and date her! And besides, what's the fun in dating, if you can't... you know... do it.

ur kinda contradicting urself. u say that angel should just date her but at the same time admit that since they couldnt have sex, whats the "fun" (point) in it.

angel. oh god without a question. i hated riley. he was just a complete wanna-be. 4x20 was one of my favourite episodes from season 4 just because angel came back and kicked rileys ass lol
 
Angel all the way. Riley just never did it for me. He always seemed filler and not the love of Buffy's life unlike Angel who she still went to even after they broke up. Its Angel hands down.
 
Angel. but in ''into the woods'' i felt really sorry for Reilly, Buffy was out of order.
But do you remember *the sanctuary/yoko factor? Reilly knew Buffy was going to LA to see Angel but when Xander told reilly that Angel has had sex with her, Reilly got really really annoyed.
I was like 'calm down Reilly, what right have you got to get so bent out of shape just because your bird slept with someone else before you. get a grip'
 
but them not being able to do it was the whole appeal. its this star-crossed lovers thing. u love someone, but u cant be with them. u wanna sleep with them, but u cant. tho according to ur profile on the side ur a guy so i can kinda see why the bangel storyline would be too corny for u 😉
 
I'm not a Bangel fan, but I still prefer Angel to Riley. I really didn't like Riley, he's just not my type of guy, and I found him to be a bit annoying. I didn't really like Angel while he was dating Buffy, but I still think that they were in fact in love and he did have his moments. Besides, he used to be the most dangerous/vicious vampire in the history of the world. [Other than the Master.] Have to love a strong guy. :biggrin:
 
Hard choice, relationship wise I'd say Riley no contest. But as characters it's hard, Angel has alot going for him, more so than Riley. But then again I kind of like Riley, Angel annoys me and I especially despise his bully-like behaviour, he's almost as threatening as Angelus and most of all towards his so called friends.
 
Riley was a piece of crap addition to the show, IMO. I didn't care for him or his involvement in any way. Blech!
That being said I vote Angel.
