Angel or Spike?

Here's a question that just occurred to me:Assume that Buffy either knew or very strongly believed that the amulet would destroy its wearer. The only candidates to wear it are her two vampire lovers. Knowing that she would be signing one or the other's (un)death warrant, which one would she sacrifice, and most importantly, why?

My guess would be Angel because she would feel that he would have the best chance of returning, After all, she'd sent him to hell once before, and he had managed to come back. (A rather lame excuse, I know, but there is NO WAY that I could sacrifice Spike after she'd rescued him so often)

I don't think she'd want to choose. She'd probably just leave it up to them saying, "Hey who wants to sacrifice themselves for the world, and if you do I'll know that you're truly a champion." :nod: I don't know, maybe not but I think since Angel wimped out on wearing it she still would've chosen Spike because she knows how tough he is.
 
Wimped out? Na-uh! He wanted to wear it, why would he even bother bringing it if he wimped out. She told him she needed him to be her backup if she lost. (Counts to 10) 😛 Ok I'm calm now, anyway they couldn't have David there for the whole ep because he was shooting his own finale.
I also think she'd let them make their own decision. But I kind of think Buffy could have worn it.. she was ensouled and a champion.
 
hmm... I think she won't choise it's up for Spike and Angel. But I have this feeling that she prefered Spike to do it so he could make up for all the bad he'd done. I don't know for sure. But She will certainly be sadder if Spike was gone.
 
Interesting question. In a way, I feel like she did choose Spike, not really knowing what would happen if he wore it. As far as she knew at that point, he might indeed have been destroyed. Yet she chose to send Angel away and gave Spike the amulet. I know she said she needed Angel to lead the second wave if necessary, but I'm sure there was more to it than that....

We both agree with that. Where we differ is in "the only one WHAT?"

Seriously, my question was more meant to involve the two men with whom Buffy has shared the closest relationships. She is forced to sacrifice one. The wearer of the amulet will almost assuredly die, and it can only be worn by a champion. In other words, the fate of the world depends on her picking the mightiest Champion as the bearer. No one of lesser caliber could qualify.
 
I absolutely agree with jruby. Maybe she thought that she would of been distracted with Angel there pr didnt want him to get hurt. BUt she would of Chosen Spike. Like she sad, only a Champion can wear the necklace. Thats why she gave it to him in the first place.
 
Honest...I'm thinking "let them wrassle it out" and yes...with some sort of oil involved 😉

But I think it panned out exactly the way it would have, even if all involved knew that the amulet would certainly destroy them. Buffy would have picked Spike because she wants Angel to taste her cookies when they're done, Angel wants Spike gone and Spike wants to do that one big thing that will make Buffy realise how much he's willing to sacrifice for the good fight.
 
I see it as a metaphor: The one she picks to be the champion, is the one she actually picks to be the one for her. Many of you wouldn't agree, but that's what I think. So according to my theory, Spike is the one she chooses in the end.

And to answer your question...
I think she wouldn'tve chosen Spike, for the reason I said. She'd want Spike to be it, because he is the one.

That means she picked spike knowing it would get rid of him and leave the way cleared up for Angel - Yep sounds about right.

I think she would have given Spike the amulet knowing it would destroy him. I don't she could knowingly give up agnel again. She told Angel she had thoughts of long term plan with him, she never mentioned that to Spike.

You know it's not what I meant. And do you really think she would get rid of Spike? Come on! Remember earlier this season she said to Spike she's not ready for him to not be around. And no, she wasn't ready at the end of the season. Do you really believe she'd want Spike to be destroyed?! I, personally think she loves him. And I'm not saying she doesn't love Angel, but in the end, I think she picked Spike (see above). And don't forget that after she was with Angel, she got back to Spike, telling him their kiss was just an Hello, and she spent the night with him. She sent Angel back to LA and picked Spike to spend what might have been her last hours alive with him.

About the future thing, maybe she didn't need to tell that to Spike. Maybe being with him during the last days was enough to say a lot. To say she wants to not only spend the last days with him, but to be with him forever.

Anyway, that's my interpretation.
 
Easy. Knowing the amulet would cause harm to the wearer, Buffy would have made the exact same decision. Angel wasn't sure what the amulet did, and she couldn't risk his life to wear it. To quote Buffy from Selfless:

"I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this life."

It seems she knows exactly where her heart will and always will lie. She used the second front as an excuse to get him out of danger IMO. Angel had been in L.A for 4 years doing good and helping others. His loss to the world would be much more devastating to her and to humanity if Angel were to die wearing the amulet. Choice between Angel and Spike to lose one? Exactly as it played out. She'd choose to lose Spike.
 
I think we should put our feelings and opinions about both relationships aside and just look at the situation infront of us. I think as I said earlier that Buffy chose Spike for not one but many reasons even Angel knew that when he said something like this 'That's one reason, what's the other?' If she wanted to keep him out of danger I don't think he would've asked that, he knew Spike was involved somehow.
She chose Spike to be the champion who will wear the amulet, she didn't choose Angel not that she didn't trust Angel's ability to finish the job. She didn't choose by feelings, she chose by slayer's instinct.

I agree with everything you said up until this statement, Flawless Faith.

In my opinion, I believe that the ''second front'' statement carried a double-meaning in that not only did Buffy want Angel out of harms way, but she knew full-well that Angel would be the only one who could protect the rest of the world if everything got out of control. Furthermore, Angel is the one who has been referred to as a ''champion'' (this term denotes great emotional, mental and physical strength). In addition to Angel's status, he possesses the necessary leadership skills to ensure that no further chaos would ensue.

As for the reasoning behind Buffy giving the amulet to Spike, I believe this was Buffy's way of helping Spike to reach complete redemption.
 
That is true Teh Torey. I think in Buffy's heart, she would have liked Angel to be fighting beside her in this battle, knowing she could very well die (again) in it. But she wouldn't allow him to for A) her sake incase she survived and B) for the rest of the world's sake. Basically what I was trying to say was she wasn't just brushing him off to go run back to Spike. She wanted him out of Sunnydale so she knew he would be safe, along with the rest of humanity.

I fully agree that Angel was called a "champion" on several occasions, mostly on his own show and almost exclusively by his own people. The only person BUFFY named as HER champion was Spike. Whether she loved Spike or Angel most, whether that "second front" thing was for real or just a ruse to avoid having to keep two ensouled vampires off of each other's throats, it doesn't really matter. Knowing what little she knew about the amulet and its properties, she trusted her strongest warrior to carry it, and she sent "Back Up Guy" back to LA.

Spike definitely! I think Spike and Buffy are so cute together! For me, they're the best couple ever! And Buffy didn't know about the amulet, so i agree with white avenger, her champion was spike! 😀
