Angel S6: Cover to #01... plus some interesting tidbits (Possible Spoilers)

I've been doing a little snooping around on the internet hunting for some advance intel on the new Angel comic, and I came across some very interesting things. Not the least of which is the cover to #01, which I don't think has been posted here yet:

The most interesting thing I read about it was at the IDW site, where they wrote:

The series will be ongoing, delivered in multi-part story arcs with one-shot spotlight issues filling in additional story gaps between arcs.

Does that mean that they've already decided to change it from a 12-issue limited series into an ongoing series like Buffy Season 8... if so, that's frickin' sweet!


On the wikipedia article for the series, there was an interesting mention of the fish-thing.

After The Fall is set to introduce Betta George "” a fish-like character from Brian Lynch's series Spike: Asylum and Spike: Shadow Puppets into the series canon, simultaneously canonizing Asylum and Shadow Puppets.

I dunno whether the last bit about Asylum and Shadow Puppets is true or just a conclusion by the writer, but interesting nonetheless.

Also, the article mentions that there will be sort of stand-alone issues in the series, which I'm sort of thinking could be like #05 "The Chain" is with Buffy. Now, I know this is just wishful thinking, but I could imagine maybe Joss writing one of these?
 
That's weird. I'm used to seeing a different visual style from Tony Harris. "Different" meaning cooler, lol. Huh. Lynch's giant fish annoys me. The character was alright, but just too absurd to be a regular. Hope he's right about the "ongoing" thing though. Hope Joss writes some issues...he's just gotta.
 
I'm starting to wonder about Season 6. Is that really what it is?

I distrust that statement above about how adding the fish-guy from previous non-canon episodes "canonizes" them. The conspiracy guy in me wonders if somebody from IDW submitted that Wikipedia entry.

Too much about this new series doesn't feel very Joss. The cover falls into that category. I'll check out the first couple of issues to find out how Angel and whoever got out of the alley. I'm pretty sure that much is Joss's basic storyline. After that I'll make a decision on the quality, but I won't be buying future issues based on it's canon status, because I'm not sure I believe in it.
 
They seem to be going out of their way to say it's not Season 6"”not in the way Buffy 8 is a season.

That cover makes me think of non-canon Buffy/Angel novelizations or something, honestly. Not distinct. Tony's covers for Vaughan's Ex Machina series are so cool.

I really really would like to believe that some of that Wiki info is BS.
 
Yeah somebody about the supposed cover doesn't seem right and it's just not as exciting as Buffy Season Eight, but if this is really Season Six I hope they don't f--- it up cause all this "information" that's coming out doesn't sound very exciting
 
I hope this sees the light. If it is season 6 of course. Otherwise I am not interested. I want officials. Thanks for posting tho. Glad to get some kind of insight, no matter what kind of info it is.
 
It wont seem like Season Six to me unless it has Angel writers... They can't just throw it off to some random comic writers, not after everything us 'save Angel' fans have been through. Seems a bit too confusing atm.
 
i was very excited when i heard about a possible season six but i have to admit that my anticipation is being tempered as more details come to light. I too want a proper 'season six' and am getting increasingly dubious if we are going to get it. The cover is weird - angel looks like some kind of hippy (not that there's anything wrong with that, except well...Angel?) then i read somewhere that it will be mostly about a lone Angel with no fang gang as that is what Joss was considering for season six (i think i saw this over at IDW's website). That being said - i am buying Spike: shadow puppets and i'm really, really enjoying it. I think the writer has a really warped sense of humor so take anything he says with a grain of salt. At least i hope so, cos i can cope with big fish george in the spike comics but it dosen't mean i want to see him Angel.
 
I don't want a 'lone Angel.' I like the team. I think without the team, there's no point. That's just imo.
 
Hmm...what to make of this comment from Dark Horse editor Scott Allie.

SL: IDW Publishing picked up the Angel comics license, and Joss recently announced he’ll oversee a Season Six comic run over there. Any chance of a Buffy/Angel crossover?

SA: Joss liked the work of one of their writers, and he helped that guy hammer out a story line, but it's not Season Six–and he said that specifically in a panel this weekend at San Diego. We're not calling ours Season Eight just because it follows the end of the show. We're calling it that because Joss is running it the way he ran the show, and he's working mostly with the writers he used on TV. This is the continuation of the TV show. He gave IDW a great springboard for a story, but it's not of the scope of what we're doing.

Here's his answer. Try to find anything about Angel in it.

JW: Buffy will be continuing and I will be jumping in periodically to write, and I'll be overseeing all of it. I see every script, and every page, and every rough and all that stuff the same way as I did on the show. I am executive producing it, but also I'll be writing arcs of it periodically throughout, or one-shots, which are really fun to do. Then, of course, there's my new baby that comes out…on the brand new, completely free on MySpace, Dark Horse Presents, which they've just revived. I did a thing for them…[with] Fabio Moon, called Sugar Shock. It's about an all-girl/robot band. The bassist is a robot. Fabio is an extraordinary artist and it's the most fun.

Yeah, that NY Post interview bummed me out. Angel feels like the neglected stepchild of the buffyverse. Wonder if Joss is at least keeping tabs on the scripts as they go forward, like with Buffy. He'd have to, right? He's allowing people to call this canon.

JW: Well, we're not calling it season six, because I don't want to people to confuse it with the Buffy comic. But it does take place after the end of the show. Brian Lynch has delivered a basic arc outline, and he's doing all the heavy lifting. We sat down and talked about where everybody was, and what kind of world it was, and what we were planning to do, and what we could never have done, and wanted to do. He's sort of taking it from there. I think the first issue is slated to come out later this year. Late, late, late, late this year.

Hey! I read that interview on Whedonesque today. Do some of you guys go to Whedonesque.com?

Anyways. The cover art looks pretty awesome! It's making me more excited about the comic book.

It kind of does seem that Joss is pushing Angel to the side and making room for everything else. Hopefully the Angel comic series is so successful that Joss takes it a little more seriously and gives it a lot of attention. Although...he has been very busy lately...

I'm just glad that Angel is getting a little action! (Did that come out a little nasty sounding...?)
 
def brilliant. But I wonder about crossovers because of this:

Whedon: I do have plans for Spike, but the Angel franchise to which Spike defected is in fact owned by another comic-book company, so all that has to be worked out.... And is indeed being worked out.

TVGuide.com: Does that mean there will or won't be Angel crossovers?
Whedon: There will be a certain amount. The Angel characters were in the Buffyverse and could appear. I'm not going to feature them heavily because that other company is working on them, and I just don't want to be a schmo to them.
