Angel Season 1 vs. Buffy Season 1

Which was the better first season and why?

Definitely Angel. Even though I prefer Buffy overall, the writers were still finding their feet a bit in season 1 of Buffy, so the first season of Angel feels more solid if you get what I mean. I didn't really enjoy half of the episodes in S1 Buffy, but liked a lot of S1 Angel.

I agree with sisterofmercy, but it's kind of not fair, ATS has the advantage of Joss and company having 3 years of BtVS under their belt. The characters of Angel, Wesley, and Cordelia (as well as the crossover characters) had all had screentime on BtVS. Even though season 1 of ATS wasn't my favorite, the majority of it still was very, very good.

Buffy season 1 was great, but Angel had better stories and benefited from stronger characters, like Angel, Doyle and the very under appreciated Kate Lockley

I immediately liked Buffy, although I didn't love it yet.

Season 1 of Angel took me almost 2 months to get through. I just didn't care for it. It wasn't until Season 2 that I liked Angel.

I hate to say this.. but it's kinda unfair to judge the first season of Buffy against the first season of Angel. Buffy's first season was half season and you had to get standalone (throw-away) episodes as you were trying to build a fanbase. Angel didnt have to worry about that.

The comparison of season 2 Buffy vs season 1 Angel would be more fair, as they both were first full seasons.

Buffy.. I don't know, I'm a sucker for those cheesy episodes. They're the ones that make me laugh the most.

Angel. Watching it now, the first seasons of Buffy are very dated.

As others have said it's kinda unfair, considering BtVS was starting the verse and had to get a fanbase, unlike Angel. Also BtVS s1 only had twelve episodes... On the other hand, AtS s1 had a couple pretty bad episodes. I'd still give it the edge in the end, because you got 'I Will Remember You', 'Hero', 'Five by Five', 'Sanctuary' and 'To Shanshu in L.A' which were some of the best eps in Angel.
