Yeah, yeah, I'm jumpin the gun a bit...but we read what Joss said, and look!

IDW editor-in-chief and publisher Chris Ryall presided over the panel, which consisted of Angel and Star Trek writer Scott Tipton, Spike: Asylum writer Brian Lynch and Super Hero Happy Hour creator Dan Taylor, with Simmons to join later.

First up on the presentation was Spike: Shadow Puppets, described by Lynch as "Kind of a sequel to the 'Smile Time' episode," referring to the fan favorite season 5 Angel episode; he said it's also a sequel to his previously-published Spike: Asylum.

Ryall then told the crowd that Joss Whedon said in the new issues of Buffy/Angel magazine, "I am talking to Brian Lynch, about doing sort of a 'season 6 of Angel.'" Ryall then continued, "After Shadow Puppets, we will be doing some new Angel books, with Brian and Joss, picking up where the show left off. They will be post-show, and definitely canon, and co-written by Joss." Presumably this is the companion to Dark Horse's "Buffy season 8" that fans have been waiting for.

Yes! this is most excellent news! we'll all finally get to find out what happened in the alley!
but i think it's safe to say don't expect it for another year or two.

I wonder if they will be co-ordinated (sort of) the way the two shows were to allow crossovers like when the two shows were on WB? It wouldn't be the first time such a thing happened. There were Superman/Spiderman crossovers years ago, and Marvel/Dc may still be doing things like that for all I know, since I haven't read any comics in decades now.
 
That would be cool...if the two "seasons" were happening at the same time - in reality and in the Buffyverse. Joss has the freedom to do whatever he wants at Dark Horse, bring in Angel characters...

It would be cool if Buffy characters could return the favor, cameo in the IDW Angel comics...you'd hope it's a similar situation.
 
I'm upset that Angel couldn't at least go to Season Six, because I would have loved to see the developing relationship between Angel and Spike and also Illyria and her dealing with Fred's humanity. There was so much that I wanted to see explored, as Season Five Joss said that he wanted Angel's relationship season five to be with Spike and I wanted to see more of that develop as they seemed to somewhat finally get along at the end of the season. Also I would have loved to see the whole Gunn be a vampire, even though I think that would have sucked, but it would be a good story.
 
I'm wondering who will be writing the Season6 comics? I hope Joss or Tim Minear, David Greenwalt or even David Fury are involved.. I can't get into the Angel comics that are by other writers.
 
That would be really fun if Joss could wrangle Minear and the others. He's had amazing results with Buffy Season 8. A powerhouse writing team...
 
Ah but you see, Season 6 of Angel wouldn't run parallel to Buffy Season 8, it would run parallel to Buffy Season 9. Season 5 goes with Buffy Season 8.
 
One of the suggested co-writers of the proposed Canon Angel Season 6 asked some questions on the IDW message board. I'll just post the more interesting last 3.

4. SEASON SIX question. Any characters from IDW's run on the books, from OLD FRIENDS to AULD ANG SYNE to the spotlights to ASYLUM to SHADOW PUPPETS, are there any characters from those books that you wouldn't mind being picked up and plopped, official-canon style, in SEASON SIX?

5. Favorite big bad from ALL the BUFFY or ANGEL seasons.

6. Most underappreciated character from ANGEL. I'm not talking Wesley or Lorne, I'm talking about someone largely ignored by the IDW books or the fanbase in general.

My answers...

4. IDW needs to get it through their thick heads, their stuff up until this point is not canon. I don't want non-canon characters making cross-overs into the actual Angelverse. I don't care if they come from IDW, Dark Horse, the novels, or fan fic. I don't want them. It taints the whole concept.

5. Dark Willow, but that's not really possible is it. As far as what is possible goes I'd like to know more about Wolfram & Hart.

6. I don't know who's appeared in IDW, but the minor character's I'd like to see reappear would be Gwen, Dana, Whistler, the "Hmmm...Angel" witches, David Nabbit, Anne, and the dragon.
 
OK, not much here...but, a little Brian Lynch q&a. Angel 6 is in progress already, apparently.

NRAMA: Following this 4-part tale, your next comic-book effort seems to be a dream gig for many people, and certainly for Angel fans: you're working alongside (figuratively, I mean, you're not crowding him at his desk) Joss Whedon and picking up Angel's story where it left off with the finale of the TV show. We’re talking about the project that’d had the working title of Angel: Season 6, a story Joss has dubbed “After the Fall.” How'd such a thing come about in the first place?

BL: He begged and begged and begged, until I relented. That's the story I tell the ladies, anyway. The true story is, I ran into him the day before Spike: Asylum #1 came out and told him about it. A few weeks later, he e-mailed Mr. Chris Ryall and said that he enjoyed the series and that he was thinking about a post-series Angel book, and he thought I'd be right for it. I was shocked and elated. We met for breakfast, traded ideas (his were better, mine were mostly of the "what if Angel and I went to a Bachelor Party? Can you imagine the fun that would be?" variety). He also indulged me in my geeky questions, Angel and otherwise.

NRAMA:I know there's not much you can say now, but will you please tell us everything? Who lives, who dies, who ends up wearing an eyepatch, and so on?

BL: All the lead characters die. Or should I say, have died, when the series begins. The series is basically two new characters at a diner talking. At first the topic of conversation is this vampire with a soul that got killed in an alleyway fighting a dragon, but eventually they move onto discussions about the upcoming weekend, fixing their boat, complaining about their boss. It's pretty awesome, a real slice of life. I wish I could really tell you about Angel, but come on, you wanna be surprised, no? I will say that the whole thing feels very, very epic... but still full of those character moments that people have come to expect from Mr. Whedon.

NRAMA: How do you and Joss go about plotting out the return of these (well, some of these) beloved characters? Who does what? BL: Trading e-mails back and forth. I come up with an idea, he molds it into what is called a "good" idea, I work on it some more, he works on it some more...it's really fun. Basically it's like when I was younger playing with Spider-Man action figures, but I have Stan Lee playing right next to me.

I like that Lynch likes to joke around and make snarky comments in interviews. Seems like he and Joss would be in synch with the writing style and characterizations, etc.
 
I would love to see a Season Six of Angel and was quite upset it got cancelled, but I don't believe Season Six is going to be as good as Buffy's Season Eight, mostly because Joss is going to be more involved in Season Eight then he'll be in the Angel Series, and we all know how things seem to falter when Joss isn't around.

Yeah, but up until this point nothing from the IDW books contradict anything that IS in canon, does it? If there are no contradictions, why does it matter?
