Angel? Still as Good as When We Saw Him in Series 1 of BtVS?

I was looking on this thread and it seems that no new threads about Angel/ David Boreanaz have been posted in the past few months/ weeks.

So, my question is... Is angel still as great and adorable as when we first saw him in Series 1 of BtVS?

My opinion is YES, YES, YES!

What does everyone else feel?
 
I seriously flippin' hope so, 'cos Mrs P's main Christmas pressies this year depend on it 😉
 
Well, personally I hated Angel on BtVS, and especially in season 1, heh. I thought he just got better and better as a character, and didn't really start to like him until season 2 of Angel.

The reason I don't discuss Angel, is because I honestly don't think about him much when I'm not watching AtS.. But when I do watch Angel, I love him.. heh, I love Angel being funny, that guy's humour is just awesome..

So yeah, in my opinion, he is as good, in fact – he is way better, mhm, yup..

I prefer Angel in AtS than in BtVS. Like Epo said, his humor is so good and it kind of gives him a humanizing trait. Like he got more and more human as the series progressed. In Buffy, he was always so broody mainly because he was always alone. But in Angel, he stared out broody but as he spent more time with AI he loosened up. I guess hanging out with people humanized him. So in short, Angel was way better in AtS than in Buffy.

Good thread, cause I've often thought about this.

And I would say - heck no!

Going back and watching Buffy Season 1 and 2, he was so good. By the spinoff especially the latter seasons he was just one big broodfest. I definitely liked him more on Buffy than on Angel. Just something got lost in him once he left Buffy.

I like Angel on Buffy, occasionally. Okay, I didn't really like him on Buffy at all. 😉 he was way better on Angel. I'm surprised that you think Ats was broody, though. That's why I hated him on Buffy! Bangel just drove me insane with all the sappy music and emotional rollercoaster-ness. There was enough broodiness there for several lifetimes. I actually thought Angel lightened up a little in his spin-off, at least after season one.

I'd have to say that Angel has grown tremendously.<======Yes I know thes big words!!!!!! But Angel has grown from season to season. S1 he had trouble of letting people in. He seemed all gloomy and always in the office. But look at our fanged hero now...........Angel you make me proud....*sniffs*
 
Hard to say. While I will say that I hated Angel on BtVS, I agree with Buffy Summers that Angel got really broody in the last couple of season of Angel. Almost unbearable at some points.

I think he was a little bit better on AtS because we got to see much more of the character and interaction with others.

The only thing I liked about him on Buffy was when he turned into Angelus. That was great. I didn't like the Angelus in season four. Too wimpy.

He did? Lol I think I must have forgotten about that, heh.. I mean I'm not even mentioning AtS season 4 cause that was just too weird and too depressing even for me.. But the earlier seasons of AtS (ok maybe not some parts on s1, dunno).. I think he was really funny.. And less broody than on BtVS (or maybe just less annoying)..
 
I preferred him on Ats than BtVS. I think on Buffy we never really got to see Angel as Angel. He was nearly always with Buffy and we only really got to know the side of him that was to do with Buffy!

I liked how on Angel we got to know the real Angel! Without Buffy there he was broody for a while but then he started to lighten up! I loved how in the first season of Angel he was really stiff and didn't want to have much to do with Doyle and Cordy but within a few episodes he had lightened up and was asking them to go to the pub with him!

I never was a fan of Bangel so having him away from Buffy was a blessing for me and I did prefer the Angel we got to see.

Angel on BtVS and AtS aren't even comparable. Apart from the lack of any acting skills that Davis Boreanaz displayed on the first season of BtVS, Angel as a real character wasn't even existent. He was the archetype of the romantic hero with a dark secret, the love subject for the heroine, that was used to emphazise the problems of being the slayer.

Angel is my favourite tv character ever and I can't even watch him on BtVS anymore because the lack of depth in the character, especially in the first season and the first part of S2 annoys the heck out of me. He only existed in relation to Buffy and had no real life of its own.

The last seasons of AtS were depressing and dark, but the biggest Angel broodfest was BtVS S3. While on the later seasons of Angel he at least got a story, he was only sitting around and yearning for Buffy in S3 of BtVS. So I'd say Angel luckily was nowhere near in AtS in comparison to S1. The character development, the complex layers they added to his personality made AtS a joy to watch. But then, I never was as much of a BtVS fan ...

I enjoyed Angel much better on his own show. I agree with most of the others that he didn't really have a whole lot of depth in the first couple of seasons of BtVS and the brooding was a BIG turn-off. Seriously though, try watching Spin the Bottle and NOT fall in love with Angel all over again. The guy's awesome.
 
Basically he can't change because he is already dead. But of course, writers of the show changed, so, he seemed to have changed. They wanted to add humor to him but well, it just doesn't suit him, because I think he has a sense of humor but is pessimistic about his redemption, he became fully sure that his redemption was illusionary in the last season.

I don't think so. Even on BtVS Angel displayed humour on occasion and him becoming more humerous on AtS is one of the very believable side-effects of bonding, working and living with humans. He displayed the most easiness and goofiness in S3 and I found that very fitting, it was a phase of his life where he had everything he ever wanted, a home, a family, a son. So I found that very in character.

Angel has doubts about the ability to redeem himself from season 1 onwards. He states several time in the course of the 5 years that he knows he can never make up for his past sins. The point is, he is right, he never will but to re-phrase Giles: Forgiveness is bestowed upon us because we need it and not because we deserve it. It's an act of mercy that Angel can hope of obtaining even if he can never earn it. In S5 I think he realizes that it doesn't matter if he will ever obtain it, he fights anyways.
 
I liked in Buffy more than I did in Angel. Just like with Cordy.

I thought his season one A:TS persona was still Angel but after that, didnt really get that much into the charecter, but got more into the other charecters.

And making Angel a dad didnt really help the charecter in my eyes.

weird, I thought that made him vulnerable and loveable to a degree he never was before.

Thought he was so cute as a dad, and wanted to hug him when he was Conorrless and Cordy and him were looking in his empty crib
 
Making Angel a father just made him entirely to human for me, and he was having a huge happy moment in his life but nothing ever really happened there.

Hm, what do you mean with *nothing really happened here*? I mean, S4 ... Connor/possessedCordy and Jasmine .. Connor was an integral part of that. Also Angel sacrificed his convictions and nearly his mission for his son in Home. Connor provided a kind of future to Angel that surpassed immortality by far. I think he was the most important person in Angels life.
 
I meant that his Happy moment, was just that. I thought that it would cost him his soul since having a baby causes a big moment of true happyness.
