Ok, it's a comic, but they say Joss Whedon is involved. To what extent? I don't know. Will it be considered canon? I don't know. Here's what they say so far though.

Angel Investigations

Remember a while back, when Rich mentioned the license for Angel possibly moving from Dark Horse to IDW? Well, it's happened. The deal just went down recently and the first Angel miniseries from IDW will hit in Summer 2005. A creative team hasn't been finalized yet, though Joss Whedon will be onboard as an advisor. Whedon isn't currently expected to write any of the stories himself, as his time is still divided between Astonishing X-Men and the Serenity feature film. So he's already got a lot on his plate even if those Wonder Woman movie rumors don't pan out.

Incidentally, this doesn't affect the Serenity license at all, which looks to be set at Dark Horse. Nor does it cover the rights to Buffy The Vampire Slayer. In fact, certain characters like Buffy (and possibly Willow) can't be used by IDW at all, at least under the current deal. However, a Faith miniseries may be in the cards and certain lingering cliffhangers from the Angel series finale may finally be resolved.

This Has A "Wolfram and Hart" Factor of Nine Out of Ten

The fact Buffy characters cant be used is shoddy, its like WB/UPN all over again.

But anyway interesting, wonder how they will explain what happened. Also, what work has Joss got to do for Serenity, isn't everything done?

Well seeing as they said the Serenity license is set at Dark Horse, I assumed they were saying Dark Horse comics is coming out with a run of Serenity comics.

Speaking of Dark Horse, they do the Buffy comics. Joss has worked with Dark Horse on Fray. The Buffy comics aren't considered canon as far as I know. The Fray comics are. I think it has to do with the amount of commitment Joss had to either project.

I bet if you were to ask at Dark Horse though, they would tell you Joss served as an advisor on the Buffy series which is what these IDW guys are saying about their planned Angel books.

I'm a little skeptical as to whether or not what happens in these Angel comics will have any real significance to the verse.

Still...I do want to know what happens after the alley.

Whyy only willow and buffy, what abou all of the other characters, whats so special about them two, well apart from the obvious lol

Again, only guessing, but I'm assuming it has something to do with Dark Horse comics holding a contract for comic releases of the Buffy characters.

I think its just two examples, nothing too worry over too much.

Well thats nice to hear, but it sucks that we wont be able to see Buffy or Willow in any Angel comics set to come out by IDW, but who knows if they do want to use them they will probably have to pay DarkHorse some money to feature them in the comic. Does this also mean that DarkHorse nolonger will be able to have Angel in make an appearnce in their comics? It would be funny if they couldnt use Spike.

You know what this means though? If the name Joss Whedon does appear on the cover as being in some way in charge of what happens, then it tells what happens in the alley, and neither Willow nor Buffy can appear, then all the fans who have been wanting Buffy/Willow and the potentials to come swinging down from the rooftops to save Angel can forget about it.

But if it ever makes it to the big screen they are always able to change things. And ofcourse there are ways of getting around Buffy/Willow being there, either by sending potentials and sending other charecters that can appear or just having Buffy and Willow as shadows(we never see their faces) and just saying they were there.

They showed us what happened when Buffy went to go see Angel after she came back from the dead but if it were with Joss's name or not it would probably be a lot different on screen

I doubt there's anything to worry about anyway, because personally I think this article is probably over-hyped. I doubt you're going to see anything like "ANGEL: The Mini-series by Joss Whedon" on the cover.

Let's pretend we do though. In that case anything that appears in between the cover becomes Canon. People become entitled to believe that that's the way it is.

How far can you stray from canon when you make the movie, before people start walking out of the theatre.

Could you have Tarzan being raised by zebras, or could Batman and Robin be gay? Could the lady wrestler China play Buffy the Vampire slayer?

I've read interviews where Joss says he's really particular about what he will or won't let his name appear on the cover of. He won't let them attach his name to the books as a contributor for instance.

Joss takes his stuff serious, and if he ever attaches his name to something that says Angel was not saved by Buffy, then that's the way it is. That's my opinion anyway. But again, I doubt you'll see his name on the cover in any form other than something like, "Based the Television Series Angel by Joss Whedon".

Batman and Robin weren't gay? Oh god! Now the world doesn't make sense!
It's Official: IDW to publish Angel comics.

QUOTE from comicscontinuum.com

IDW Publishing will publish comic books based on the former WB television series Angel, editor-in-chief Chris Ryall told The Continuum.

Although plans are still being firmed up, IDW will likely kick off the property with a mini-series that starts in May or June.

"It'll be set at some point after the show ended," Ryall said. "We'll also do a couple one-shots that spotlight other characters and have more minis beyond the first one."

No creative teams have been announced, although it should be noted that former IDW editor-in-chief Jeff Mariotte, who now contributes to the publisher as a free-lance writer, has written Angel novels.

Angel, created by Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt, spun out of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and ran on The WB from 1999-2004. Angel comics were previously published by Dark Horse Comics.

Sounds good actually!

I'm far from being a fan of comicbooks, haven't read one in years actually, although i do intend on getting hold of Fray at some point.

Assuming this is made official canon then i will pick it up. The fact is that they need a way to bridge the end of the series and any potential live action continuation, be it a movie, spin off or whatever. They won't want to have to spend time explaining what happened in the alley at the start of a movie, it would take up too much time and confuse any new fans not familiar wih the show. This way we can get an official conclusion, let Angel, Spike, Illyria and Gunn (assuming they all survive) move on to the next phase of their lives and allow the movie or whatever to have a fresh start as far as story is concerned.

when did they show us what happened when buffy and angel met, what happened?

Yes but that defeats the purpose of something being canon, you can't just change it about to suit you (by you I mean the writers of an Angel or Buffy movie).

Interesting info this is though, I will keep my eyes out for them. Could be interesting.

True true, but I think it would have to be perfection in order for Joss to make it canon.

I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the same one as Primal Slayer, but the one I'm thinking of was by Jane Espenson. It didn't really interfere with canon, and personally, I thought it was pretty good.

The way I remember it Xander, Anya, Dawn and Willow, all speculate on what may have happened when Buffy met Angel in their secret meeting spot. Their fantasies take on a life of their own. I think it has to do with a spell of Willows.

At one time you used to be able to download the Ecomic from BBCcult. I think there's a link to it on the board here, if you want to do a search.

I dont want to sound thick but what is a canon when people you used to say it about fray i thought they meant it as like nfiring into the future but now i think i was wrong, am I?

It's the generally accepted works of what really happened in the Buffyverse. It's mainly the show, the movie, and any Joss endorsed comics 😀

I've heard people argue against the movie for canon, because they say not enough of Joss made it to the screen.

If you can get ahold of the original script somehow, though, I'd say that would have to be considered canon. Although there is stuff in the series that contradicts the movie (even the script, I think). In that case the TV Series woud have to take precedent, I'd think.
