Ok while I did the Crossovers with Angel, I stuck to Buffy on my rewatch so I thought Id watch Angel the non Crossover episodes.
Im on I Fall To Pieces, basically Angel tries to do XFiles
I do love this exchange between Cordelia and Angel
Cordelia "you've been fantastic saving people left and right"
Angel "Im not comfortable asking for money"
Cordelia "Then get over it" 😂😂
Then
Angel "Am I intimidating do I put people off ?"
Cordelia "As Vampires go you're pretty cuddly" 😂
I Fall To Pieces in spite of some funny dialogue is not a good episode. The stalking Doctor with detachable body parts probably sounded good on paper but fails in practice. It just looks ridiculous seeing this eye hovering.
Also the victim of the week is completely uninteresting.
Room With A View - The episode that introduces Phantom Denis. I don't hate this episode but I wouldn't say I liked it either. Don't ever expect to watch it again
Its not my first time, just a rewatch I haven't done in awhile.
I Will Remember You is an awful episode that plays on B/A nostalgia to the max. The Turtle villain is stupid (Attacking Angel and Buffy together at the same time) and the Oracles otherwise known as The Extras in Paint are quite frankly ridiculous. SMGs peformance is great though.
Basically Angel decides to make a decision without Buffy having a choice in the matter which is wrong. Also if the Oracles can just redo a day like this why not do it all the time !
NotASlayerYeah, Buffy not being given a choice is a consistent theme for her love interests. Riley was the best there.
Maybe i cant say this or not but i liked Angel more than buffy season 4 and 5 were brilliant ( in my opinion)
Buffy was awesome with Caleb but the Spike/Buffy relationship was getting boring(In my opinion)

So I just watched Sense and Sensitivity. Its Tim Minears first episode. Now Tim Minear was the best writer after Joss at Mutant Enemy. He was the only one Joss never did rewrites for and would bring him with him to Firefly.
He also got Angel the character the best and fundamentally got the Angel show changed from Angel beating up a bad guy and saving a girl to being about Angel himself.
So what do I think of his first episode. Welll its enjoyable and there are some great lines but its not perfect though it introduces more of Wolfram and Hart and lawyer Lee. Its also got a human villain in Little Tony
That said the plots a bit meh. Basically Little Tony wants to murder Kate. Though as a Professional criminal he should know that going after cops is stupid.
Some great lines though
Angel "you know Anthony you can be a Rainbow"
Angel punches him "and not a pain bow"
That and
Angel "Whats the magic word"
Cordelia "urghh"
Angel "No I don't think Urgh is the magic word, I'm not sure its even a word"
Cordelia very frustrated "Oh Please"
Angel "See that wasn't so hard was it" 😂😂
All in all an enjoyable episode and actually better on rewatch than first viewing but it won't be till episode 11 that the heights of greatness will be found

He tells Doyle about becoming human and being with Buffy and that "WE" decided that we couldn't be together. NO there was no we. Angel arbitrarily laid it on Buffy right before it was about to happen and then he does his time travel, turning back the day.
In fact Buffy turns up at the start of the episode angry that Angel took a decision without her (Pangs) Angel apologises and says he was wrong and then the episode essentially with Angel doing the same thing and I can't tell if the writers caught that point or not. Its clear Greenwalt and Jeannie Renshaw (who) didn't give the same script for Howard Gordon and Tim Minear to use !
Also another couple of issues with IWRY. The Oracles tell Angel he's released from his fealty, yet his supposed mission had nothing to do with them. It was meant to be helping people because he felt guilt of all the people he killed because of his human soul. Not because he's on there Mission (which is what exactly ?)
Also why is the Shanshu prophecy such a big thing when all Angel needs to do is find a Moira demon and use some of its blood to make him human anyway!!

Finally I realised I hadn't reviewed Bachelor Party. Well theres not much to say. Its not good but its not bad either. Its good to get a bit more character info and development on Doyle and Glenn Quinn is really good. No question until the arrival of Alexis Denisof, he was the best actor on the show and really carried it in the first half.
The problem was the whole Demon family, eat the brains subplot was both unescessary and uninteresting and bring it down. Overall ok. Not the worst but not the best either

So Hero. I remember Ian from Passion of the Nerd once said if you keep the start and the end but cut out the middle its a great episode and he's right.
The beginning and end are fantastic and Glenn Quinn gives an excellent peformance as Doyle and that ending hits hard "Is that it am I done ?"
Even more so as we know the reason for his firing and that he would pass away only a few years later from that reason.
The rest of the episode with the Demon Nazis is terrible. A I thought all Pure Demons had left the Dimension anyway and B in the words of Anya they're bigger ! C they hate humanity but are cos playing in a human group uniforms Huh ! D This giant Goose stepping Army "you can't fight the Scurge Angel" ends up being just a few guys and the leader who Angel quickly kills so yeah he can!
E How did this Humanity killing device come about and why not use it on the Human population ? F How did they get it on to the Ship ? G You've got lots of good Demons some of whom are half human so how does the Soul work with these ?
So yeah watch the start and watch the end and skip everything with the Nazis Demons. Even in 1999 that was a bad idea.

Angel decides not to wake Buffy to fight the demon for well reasons. Cordy decides not to tell Buffy that Angel is gone for well reasons and stupidly says it instead. Hell even Doyle whose learnt to accept his Demon half decides not to use his stronger Demon side either to fight. Again for well reasons.
Buffy then magically turns up just at the right time.
Hell the Moira Demon is stupid to since it decides not to put protection around the one thing that can kill it.
Interesting little tidbit but Charisma was having trouble remembering her lines in this and Sarah was so angry she had Charisma banned from set with her. If you notice in the Buffy/Cordy scene. Neither are in a shot together when speaking.

One of the poorer examples of putting on the Reich. It's a shorthand so that people know that these guys are EVIL. And dumb; yes, they aren't pureblood demons, which means they want to eradicate themselves too. Basically, Suicide Nazis.

Well they're meant to be pure bloods, its why the Humanity burner thingy doesn't harm them (though Angel is also unaffected) and it kills Doyle.
Buffy/Angel mythology is not the greatest to put it mildly
@garfan watching Somnambulist and your debate with @hoponlilmama about character competency. Well nothing is sacrificed in this. Jeremy Renners Vampire Serial Killer Penn is still a great villain yet the characters act smart.
When Wesley has suspicions about Angel, he immediately tells Cordelia.
Both Cordy and Wes immediately chain up Angel to make sure he isn't killing people.
Angel uses Kate and the Police to help track down Penn.
Cordy realises Penn is pumping her for information. Its all great stuff.
The characters are acting smart.
This is the first real episode to look at Angel as a character rather than the guy who just beat up monsters and is a genuine stand out. @NotASlayer we are talking show bibles it takes it seriously in this when Kate is researching Penn and Angel and how the invite works
Ok so Expecting, truly bad episode on rewatch. So my opinion on it hasn't changed since it aired.
How it handled Pregnancy and we know Greenwalt and Whedon's views on pregnant women is pretty awful. Then and now is bad.
Honestly just skip this episode. You're not missing anything. There's not even a good line of dialogue that sticks out for me. Its just bad.
As an episode the Angel dance scene and his painting talk are both good. The rest of the episode is bad. Apparently Jahiera was originally meant to be a reoccurring character. Yeah Im not sorry they never brought her back.
She like Expecting is an episode you can skip
