Angel would go to the depths of Hell to save

Yeah it was a bit of a dull romance, but they never really got serious... possibly because angel was too scared to let himself love again... also a person can only have so many 'great loves' before it starts to get a bit silly

You know a big reason why Angel/Nina didn't really work or mean anything? Because they talked about Buffy in just about every episode that season. Now, I love Buffy with Angel and Spike, so seeing the two of them clash over her was great, and I liked it, but at the same time it made it difficult for me to get behind some new girl when Angel kept bringing up Buffy. I mean, no one is going to be able to compete with Buffy as it is, but when Angel keeps arguing with Spike over who loves her more? Nina didn't have a chance. It was like Riley in S4 of Buffy. Angel kept coming back to Sunnydale and Buffy went to L.A. for "I will remember you". They made it so clear that they were still in love that I couldn't get into Riley (although, I just plain didn't like him, so it would have been hard regardless).

Plus, Nina was only in about three episodes, which makes it hard to take her super-seriously. I never had a problem with her and I thought the whole werewolf angle could have been developed way more (it would have been a great vehicle to bring Oz back for an arc). Also, it's probably worth mentioning that the writers were fully banking on at least one more season of Angel, probably two. They introduced characters like Nina and Illyria and could have done way more with, most likely because they just thought they'd have more time. If there had been an Angel S6, Nina would have been a bigger part of it.

As for Angel walking through hell for someone (not too many ways to show how much you love someone), I think he would have done it for Buffy and Cordy in a heartbeat. He did it for Darla (sort of) because he felt guilty and responsible for her. He wanted to save her. He was pretty clear that he never loved Darla. Ultimately though, the guy's a hero, of the first order. He would have gone anywhere to save Buffy or Cordy.

In defence of not going to Hell for Nina, they hardly pushed their relationship at all. Besides her literally knocking the stuffing out of him 🙂 it was very much a normal relationship, especially for the Buffyverse and it wasn't really shown that they were in love in the way that would have led to the kind of devotion he would show for Buffy, Cordy or Darla.

Had it been more of an featured romance it would have seemed at odds with his character, but it never seemed like he thought of her as one of the loves of his life.

I don't get all the hate for this 'ship' considering Nina was in a total of 3 episodes. I don't even consider it a ship really, it had no time to play out.

Not every romance needs to be a great-love or die for the other person type of relationship.

Angel certainly felt for Nina when she was going through her wolf transition; and later when they were together it's clear he cared about her when he warned her and asked her to leave the city. I don't think Angel and Nina spent enough time together to bond as deeply as he had with both Buffy and Cordy.

I liked Angel and Nina together, and I would have even if I didn't prefer Spike with Buffy. It was clear that she was more than interested in him, and it was also pretty clear, at least to me and Wes, that he was totally oblivious to the fact. I think that there might have originally been plans of some kind for a relationship between the two to develop, but time just ran out. Maybe things would have been different if there had been a real Season 6, but that's just speculation. What is NOT speculation is that Angel has always had, throughout his series, some "special" girl, maybe not in a romantic way, but someone, nonetheless, who wasn't just another member of the gang. I think that Kate was supposed to fill that role in the first season, but the chemistry simply never developed, the way that it did with James and Sarah.

For whatever reason, the good ship "Ningel" never even left port, let alone setting sail, but I do find one thing significant. Granted, Angel hadn't developed a huge number of friends during his time in LA, but there were some. Nina was the only one that we see him making a point of trying to get out of town just before the final battle, and she is the only woman in the entire series who he promises to join in some far away exotic place once the dust settled. That HAS to count for something.

And something a little bit off subject, someone, either the writers or Angel himself, seems to have a definite interest in blonds. Darla, Buffy, Kate, Nina, and eventually even Cordy. Maybe that explains "that one time" that Spike mentioned.

LOL @ Angel's interest in Spike due to his hair color
Cordelia (Season 4)
Darla (Season 2)
Buffy

but noticed he didn't do any of that for Nina

LMFAO God I hated that ship so much!

He'd go to the depths of Hell to save anyone, including Nina.

Yep. Dude's a bona fide hero. He'd do whatever it takes to save just about anyone (except maybe evil lawyers...). Angel wasn't as invested in Nina as he was Buffy, Cordy, or Darla, but that's the beauty of some relationships. They don't have to all be die-hard "I-love-you-can't-breathe-or-eat-without-you-don't-leave-me-or-I'm-gonna-die" type relationships. Sometimes it's just fun and mutual attraction and doesn't delve any deeper than the surface.

Angel would definately go to Hell for Nina. He just wasn't as emotionally invested in Nina as he was the others. It's like Wesley said (to paraphrase), sometimes sex is just sex and doesn't lead to "perfect happiness". Most people in most relationships have to make do with just plain ol happy endings (pardon the pun) without all the perfectness that true love added to the mix (like with Buffy). Just cause you aren't in love with someone completely and wholly (like he was with Buffy) doesn't mean you can't be in lust with the person (like with Darla) or love someone (like Cordy... notice I emphasize that he loves her, but isn't IN love with her).

To recap:
Buffy: In love with her; head over heels perfect happiness gonna turn Angel evil type love

Cordy: Loves her (like a sister...and then ew)

Darla: In Lust with her (as Angelus) and now feels responsible for her (S3 Angel) because of past relationship

Nina: Likes her enough to have a "normal" non-serious relationship with her, but isn't in love with her; slight feelings of responsibility show that he cares, but not so much to want to get more involved with her, either due to feelings or situations (hey, it was the end of the world after all)

Aww, I loved Angel and Nina together! I thought they were so sweet and cute. 🙂 Just because it wasn't some tragic, doomed relationship doesn't mean it wasn't a valid ship.

I like Angel/Nina, but I don't particularly ship them. I liked how light it was. Cangel>Nangel>Bangel, basically.

I liked them together but because it wasn't featured much...

Yeah I understand your problem. Do you think we would be more open for Nina if they showed us more about them. Maybe just as Kate and Angel?

I think that if Nina had been featured as much as Kate was I would definitely prefer her. It is very difficult to like a character with such little screen time unless the character does something truly memorable or the actor is incredibly charismatic. Then again after the initial few episodes it became clear that Kate and Angel were more likely to kill each other than kiss each other, so who knows how things would have turned out?

Exactly.

I think so. The Buffyverse, especially with Buffy and Angel, does a fantastic job at creating relationships that we as fans emotionally invest in (Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike, Angel/Cordelia). So when they break these characters up and introduce someone new, like Nina, I think a lot of fans immediately reject the new character. heck, I know I'm guilty of this. Every time I watch Buffy or Angel I find this happens.

I didn't think Nina was a "bad" character or anything. Actually, I thought she had some real pluses. But like others have said, she was only in three episodes. There just wasn't time to get into her. But Kate is a good point. I didn't like her either at the beginning, but by the time she left the show (which was weird as well) I thought she was an interesting character.
