Angel's a Joke!

"Angel's a joke!"--that's what I would've said if I heard Joss say that he's writing a show where Angel moves to LA with Wes & Cordy while she tries to become a movie star after watching S3 of Buffy.

My first thought would have been that Cordy & Wes would've carried over their relationship, and then I would've thought of Angel barely tolerating either of those characters on Buffy.

And then if I heard about a recurring Green, horned Karaoke-singing demon...

Isn't it amazing how well it turned out?

Must admit that the title of the thread tricked me a little. :tongue:

Yes, it´s amazing. But when again when have the shows Joss have done sounded like something great? A show about a teenage girl that kills vampires based on a very unsuccesfull movie and one of the "worst" titles in history of television which alone is enough to scare people off. when Firefly: Cowboys in space. Yeah, that sounds like a big hit... And when the internetproject. I mean what kind of name is "Dr. Horrible´s sing-alog blog"? A musical in 45 minutes? Yeah, good luck getting people to watch that...

And now we have Dollhouse that even if many fans are excited about a lot have reservations to. Can this be good? "The teasers isn´t even good" is sometimes heard here and where. Lets see what happens. But Joss doesn´t seem to like to make it easy for him. But so fare I´ve loved all the shows including Dr. Horrible.

But in short. Yes, it´s amazing how things work out.

I actually thought season five sucked the most, but to each their own.

Imagine Joss pitching the spinoff to the network:

Okay, so Angel goes to LA and opens a detective agency. Wes and Cordelia come along. Cordy is trying to become an actress and Wes is going to become totally dark and messed up. There will be a green demon who owns a karaokee bar and reads people's destinies, but only when they sing. Angel is going to get another vampire pregnant, despite this not being possible and the baby is going to become a teenager in a few episodes and be completely annoying to Angel and his friends. Oh, and there's a law firm that's even more evil than real lawfirms. Did I mention the gang will travel to another dimension where humans are cows and there will be dances of joy and sunlight fails to kill vampires?

Actually, when the Angel idea was first released, all we knew was that Angel was going to L.A. and Cordy would be joining him. Wes didn't come until halfway through the season, and it came as a surprise (to those who didn't read spoilers) when he came on.

And I loved classic Angel (Season One) when it first aired. The only thing that sucked was that it was at that time that WGN left the WB as an affiliate, so I couldn't get my weekly Angel/Buffy/Dawson's Creek/Charmed/Roswell fix for at least a month after the premiere was aired (it came back around "Rm w/ a Vu", I believe).

Also, note my devotion to the WB. I was 9 and watching that stuff. Safe to say my mom wasn't pleased that I was staying up til 11 o'clock to watch all these shows (with the time difference from Chicago, "Buffy" was shown at 8pm and "Angel" at 9pm).

I even remember reading a front pager in the entertainment section of the newspaper about the summary of the episodes that my city missed because of the non-affiliate at the time. haha. Boy was I one stoked third grader! haha.

I must admit, whenever I go over events that happened on the show in my head, you know, the way I would tell it to people who haven't watched the show yet, it does sound so ridiculous.
But that's part of the beauty of the show. I mean, what ingenious writing skills does it take to convert an idea that just sounds insane and a joke into believable, moving writing. If you just look at certain events without any emotions or knowledge of the show they might look so completely stupid, but if you're living it (like most of us probably do) it is transmitted in such a dramatic, life-altering way.
And that's something I really like about Whedon shows. He rewards hardcore-fans. With his shows it's really worth getting into the storyline, not missing a single episode, rewatching stuff millions of times.
