Angel's Claddagh Ring

I think that the ring was pretty much like the tattoo. They tried to show it occasionally, but unless it was necessary to the story line, it wasn't a really big priority. If you look closely, you can see Angel's hands clearly on several occasions when it's not there.
 
My best friend from childhood has the exact same ring, but wears it to symbolize her Irish heritage. I was shocked when I saw Angel with one
 
Simply because I only JUST started watching Buffy (about a month ago, finally finished the series) and yet I've always seen my friend with it. It was just strange seeing as I had never seen the ring before and then saw a duplicate of it 😛
 
He wears a sliver ring on his middle finger of his left hand in every episode of S1 that he is in but I have yet to see a screencap good enough to be able to tell if it is definitely the Claddagh.

We see it definitively in S2. He doesn't wear it again until S2 of Angel, you see it when he is singing Many in Caritas.

I think that's in characte since it must remind him of Buffy. The rings were her birthday present, were they? Just like Buffy kept the cross and ring Angel gave her, I think Angel kept the ring, but doesn't wear it very often.

We should also remember it was DBs own ring (he and his wife's wedding rings I think) so he probably wore it sometimes without it meaning anything for the character.

I have this theory that Angel only ever wore the ring when he felt hopeful or like he had something to offer to Buffy (and the maybe even the world).

First off, I just want to put down the guidelines for Claddagh ring wearing:

Single but open to something=right hand, heart out

In a relationship= right hand, heart pointing in

Engaged=left hand, heart out

Married- left hand, heart in.

Right, so when he gives the ring to Buffy in Surprise it is on his right, middle finger. I'm putting forward the suggestion that he wore it that way because she had yet to accept his offer of her own ring, or more pointedly his heart. He wore the ring indicating that he was not seeking out a relationship but his heart belonged to another. Essentially, he loved Buffy but was unsure if she want a fully committed relationship with him. However, her acceptance of his ring signified to Angel that she did want a fully fledged relationship with him. This was further confirmed by the consummation of said relationship that night. I have a feeling he possibly would have pulled back from sleeping with her if they hadn't exchanged rings. Just a hunch...

OK, so now it is season three and Angel does not wear the ring at all, in fact he doesn't wear it again for an entire two seasons. Not until he is told about the Shanshu Prophecy. I think he does this because for those two years Angel had no reason to believe he could offer Buffy any type of life. The only two times he does are when he is blissfully ignorant of the curse and when he is given a light at the end of the tunnell i.e. Shanshu and humanity. He once again removes the ring when Darla and W&H mess with him and he loses all hope in regards the work he does, the difference he is making and the nature of his fate.

Basically, when he has no reason to believe he can offer anything he removes the ring. I think the ring signified hope and possibility to him.

So that's my fanwank. And I'm sticking to it.

He's an actor, he can't wear what he wants on the set 🙂 especially in the case of the Claddagh Ring which is realated to the Buffyverse.

I loved those rings so much that i recently bought my girlfriend one with a diamond in the heart as an eternity ring, she loves it and has no idea what a geeky present it is!!! I win!
