I was just watching "The Yoko Factor" and I realized by watching Angels hands, that he's not wearing the Gem of Amara... I know that earlier in the season, Buffy gave the gem to Angel... Did something happen on the Angel series that I don't know about because I don't watch it... Or is this an on-screen mess up?

If it was me, and I was a vampire... I'd want to be wearing that all the time... I kind of value my being alive... Well, I guess I'd living dead... But you get my point...
 
I think they actually had a couple of episodes of Gem of Amara on Angel. I don't want to give anything away though.

I think it would be risky wear it. If it somehow came off and you were out in the sun then you would basically be screwed. And all the vampires would be coming after you trying to get it for themselves.

Angel actually destroyed the gem/ring at the end of that episode. He wanted to see the sunset than he smashed it with a brick.

I forgot why he did that though...

I still think he shouldnt have destroyed it, perhaps he could've kept it for a time when he may need it. at the end Not fade away for example!!!!
 
I think Harsh Day Of Light (BtVS) and In The Dark (AtS) proved that that ring was utterly useless. The fact that Angel was very easily able to snatch the ring from Marcus and kill him or Buffy very easily took it from Spike shows that this *invulnerability* is a mere illusion. All it accomplishes is that the wearer of the ring had a false sense of security.

Angel destroyed the ring because it was a false promise. An easy way out from his mission. He wanted to earn his redemption, not forgetting about the ones in the dark, who have nobody to take care of them.
 
Yea... This makes sort of sense when you watch the AtS episode, but I still thought it was really stupid to destroy the gem, and I will always think so..
 
Though there are times when the gem would have been useful, Angel couldn't have known what he'd need it for.
There was no way to tell that he'd take over Wolfram & Hart, and such.

This is the only part that makes sense to me. Angel would forever have to deal with people (vampires most likely) trying to steal it from him. And if they succeeded, that would of course be quite bad.

Still, hoenstly don't think that's reason enough to destroy it, but that's just me..
 
But, Angel is a proven fighter, so what if he had it,he could have defended himself....or worst case senario, stole it back....


I believe that Angel should have given it to Cordelia, let her save it somewhere then in times when its needed, he'd have it, butno dependancy on it.
 
Wasn't there some other reason as well?
Something like he didn't deserve to be out with humans during the day since he didn't save humanity and whatnot.

Maybe I'm just imagining things.
 
Angel's main reason for not using the ring was that he believed his place was in the dark (hence the episode title). He considered himself the defender of all those lost in the night. The ones that the likes of the police were likely to not see or not be able to help.

If he started to live as a human and work in the day, then those people would no longer have a hero and so he gave up his chance of a normal life for them.

Plus he had absolutely nothing to wear that would go with the ring! 😉
 
Yeah I think the nothing to wear reason was the main one 'cause honestly.. I mean the show would've been bad if Angel would've been able to to be out in the sun and stuff, but he obviously would have been able to save more people that way..
 
Just because the Vampire was relegated to the night though, doesnt mean the Demon world was.....
Thats where Angels logic failed....

Take for instance Couplet(?!) when Angel couldnt chase the Demon into daylight....Had Groo not been their, that one decision to destroy the Gem could have resulted in a death....

Now his reasons are noble and all, i just think he should have left it in the care of someone, rather then destroy it, incase of incidents like that....
 
I don't think that was his point, really. It wasn't about he type of threat he was able to fight against. As you say, demons are around 24/7.

It was about the people in the shadows that may get ignored if Angel is not available to them. Even vampires need to rest and cannot be awake all the time. Angel believed that he was made a champion to defend those that existed in his world ... in the dark ... because those in the light had many heroes to call their own.

I would agree that he possibly could have given the ring to someone to look after though. The question is who could he entrust to keep it safe? If Doyle alone could track it down, hidden in a maze of tunnels then eventually some evil vampire would find it, no matter where it was hidden.
 
While i agree to an extent about the idea of the people in the 'shadows'......
Angel is often up in the morning. Yes, he needs to rest, BUT comments such as the off-hand Coffee Comments in season two

Angel: "I-is there coffee?"
Cordy: "There was - in the morning. It's ten o'clock at night."
Angel: "Oh. Huh. Just a little disoriented. I've been sleeping weird."

indicate he is awake during this time.
Buffy too is a defender of 'the people in the shadows' yet she manages to be up and about for School.

No, the Ring, could have justifiably been given to someone who could have stored it, safely.

I just feel that the destruction of it was a little hasty.
 
I'm not sure that, given the cause of his sleeping problems early in season 2, you can use that to confirm his regular sleeping patterns, or lack of same. Nothing about that period of Angel's life was of his own choosing anyway.

As for Buffy, she is generally out in the early evening, maybe later into the night, but not all through the night. She is usually in bed asleep in plenty of time to be up for the following day. Not the same as Angel's nocturnal activities.
 
You cannot exactly confirm them no, but as he was running a business, for the human world, that dealt with demonic issues, indicates that he must be awake during the day.
Add to that, you do see alot of him during sunlight hours indicates he is around for them.

Buffy too can be used as an example, simply because its her duties to 'patrol' while there is a vampire threat.

The Body can run perfectlyfine on 4 hoursof sleep per day, indefinately, that means, Angel sleeps at 6am, wakes up at 10am, he still has the up to 10 hours of daylight to face, should there be a demonic issue.

What is possible and how they actually chose to live their lives are two different things. I'm sure that i could go to bed at 6am and wake up at 10pm every day if i chose but i wouldn't recommend talking to me a week into this new routine. There is a reason that most people sleep for around eight hours a day and that is to prevent massive amounts of bad tempered axe murders when the world comes under an epidemic of cranky assed people needeing more rest and relaxation.

Angel could, and did, choose to work as best he could during the day too, but his priority, he believed, was to protect the people he could through the night. Buffy's calling also meant that she was forced to patrol at night as well but not at the expense of her sleep. She would patrol into the evening and then at the point where the majority of Sunnydale were tucked up in their beds, safe from the vamps, she would go there too. Angel made himself available for all those without the safety of their homes and beds to go to.
