I know that after Angel got his soul in 1898, he still went after Darla and caught up with her in the 1900 China Boxer Rebellion ("Darla/"Fool for Love"). He came to America in 1902 ("Orpheus") and viewers are under the impression that that was when he started feeding off rats. Then, it's reveald that he still lived decently during the 1920s, the 1950s and the 1970s. By 1996, Angel was feeding off rats, but in 1952, he was buying his blood in a bottle. Doesn't he know how to get blood from the butcher's by then? Also, Whisler said he was living that way for 90 or so years. That's not true. The B/Averse gets messed up...

my theory:the writters think we dont have memory.
whistler said that in btvs s2 and orpheus is in ats s4.they probably thought we weren't going to remember those few words

A lot of writers don't do their math or learn their history, it seem... they should pay more attention to their over-obsessive fans. At least in "Rm w/ a Vu," Joss didn't let Jane Espenson get away with a line that would seriously mess up the vampire rules... it's so confusing, like when Joss said that vampires can breathe to smoke cigarrettes, but they don't have to, yet that still doesn't explain why Angel couldn't give Buffy CPR in "Prophecy Girl"... everything's messed up.

Vampires can have ups and downs just like humans, maybe during the times when he was feeding off rats Angel had no money to get the blood from butchers, and then he managed to get some money and start buying blood. Things like people discovering he is a vampire could make him leave his residence quickly and so lose any money he had gained. Whilst normal vampire can just kill, Angel could/would not and so his ups and downs were a lot more drastic. As for the breathing thing, its possible it is a comfort thing, so that the part of the vampire that is still 'human' (the humanity the demon retains-the personality) doesn't freak out about how different from human they really are, it isn't pure what they breath out so they can't give CPR but it allows them to smoke, they don't have to breathe but they can if they wish.

I thought about that too, but I'm thinking why would he start feeding off rats if he already knew how to get blood a certain way. Sure he's trying to torture himself, but wouldn't he at least be desperate for blood instead of the whole feeding off rats thing?

Well, maybe it's become much harder to get free blood from the butcher between 1952 and 1997. That seems to make sence to me... well, a little sence. But yeah, the breathing thing is a definate screw up of the writers. Obviously Joss thought it would be cooler for Vampires to smoke, but he should have stuck with the 'no breath' thing. Also, often, Vampires get chocked, and when they do, one of two things happens; either they laugh and say, "you can't choke me, I have no breath," or they simply get choked.

Angel travelled quite a bit, getting blood on the fly as it were especially in those times probably wasn't easy, neither was setting yourself up in a new town, imagine you come into town, no money, place to stay or food. So you sleep on the streets, find what little money you can and feed on whatever is available, human's hunt through garbage, a vampire who needs blood would feed on rats its simple. As for the choking it may not be the cutting off of air or anything, if you had hands around your neck then your muscles there would be squeezed which would hurt yeah. They maybe reacting to the pain of the squeeze and not a loss of air.

My theory is that he was majorly depressed in '96 and thought he didn't deserve bottled blood.

yes possible, but the writers do mess up often with the ages of angel and spike, the whole breath thing (sometimes they are fine but in becoming part 2 Spike knocks Druscilla unconscious by crushing her windpipe. Hello, wouldnt happen if she doesnt need to breath!), and history.

Do I see respect in this room?? The writers so far has wroton what nearly 100 episodes and they have to know every deatail in it. you should all be thankful you get the episodes you do and the writers sometimes change so the new writers wont know what has happened befre.
