Angel's reaction to Buffy

So, in the 1st episode of season one, when we see Angel for the first time, he was following Buffy but she senses that so, after a few moments (that are not important to what i'm trying to say here), she kicks him in the back and he says: "Ah, heh. Is there a problem, ma'am?". Buffy answers: "Yeah, there's a problem. Why are you following me?" and he says: "I know what you're thinking. Don't worry, I don't bite." She back off and Angel says: "Truth is, I thought you'd be taller, or bigger muscles and all that. You're pretty spry, though.". Ok that's the important part. Angel says he thought she'd be taller (etc) so he's saying he never saw her before/they were meeting for the first time.

BUT we see that Angel had seen Buffy before. In the episode Becoming part 1, Whistler talks to Angel and convinces him to see Buffy. Angel sees her at school, at home, when she was slaying her first vampire, etc, etc.

So, obviously that wasn't the first time Angel saw Buffy. I wanted to know what you guys think about this... Is this a mistake? Was Angel lying?

well, i could be honest and say that i think it was the writers not knowing all about it at that point yadda yadda yadda, or i could do what i do to myself and explain a logical fanwank. you pick 🙂.
 
Yeah, the writer's hadn't even decided that Angel was a vampire yet, apparently. You've just got to embrace the retroactive continuity🙂
 
that and, maybe he had to play up the fact that they just met so she didn't think him some scary psycho stalker guy.
 
Maybe he really did expect her to be taller and more muscular the first time he saw her and just chose to express that sentiment when they finally officially met?
 
I always assumed that the "Don't worry, I don't bite" line was a way of really throwing off the readers about Angel's vampirism (hey, he wasn't lying!).

As for the bigger/taller bit, at first it just made sense, it sounded like something you might say if you meet the slayer. Part of it is probably that the writer's weren't 110% sure of Angel's past at that point, and part of it could be just Angel's character trying to throw Buffy off of the topic of why he was following her (note how he never DID answer that question. His "insulting" her body type quite effectively made her forget about the part where he was following her).

OR, if you really want to look into it, he could very well not be lying. He might have been surprised the first time he saw her, expecting someone of another size/build and just thought to bring it up then 😀
 
In all likelihood it is probably just a writer's error, but hey, sometimes you've got to come up with your own explanations to make these things work.
 
I honestly think it was Angels rather failed attempt on acting casual. He insulted her instead of being a cool first impression
 
He only saw her once before Sunnydale, and that was peeping out through the window of a car in broad daylight. Plus, Angel probably wasn't in the greatest shape at that particular moment, from the looks of him. Maybe when vampires go for long periods of time with an inadequate food supply (just an occasional rat, here and there) their super tuned senses begin to fail.

Maybe he figured after she began training she'd bulk up. And she was still a teenager; he could have expected that she'd get taller. So he was expecting her to look different from the first time he saw her.
 
Okay, since Angel was not supposed to stick around I think we can all agree that it was just the writers later changning their minds.

But if we were, hypothetically, putting this into real Buffyverse context I would say that this was just something he noticed about her the first time he saw her and now he's telling her that. I mena, the way he was looking at her from the car (when he first saw her), there was obviously SOMETHING on his mind. Okay, this was probably her prettiness or whatever putting him off, but he might have as well noticed that she maybe doesn't fulfill the slayer stereotype.
 
Well it can be easily explained that Angel was either lying or that, like people have said, he really thought she would be tougher looking. Angel also lied about never having fed on a human after he got a soul.

Hehe, just remember how casual he was when he lied to Wes and Cordy about obsessing over Darla.
I agree, that always bugged me but you also have to remember that was the pilot episode, and I doubt the writers knew at that point where they wanted to go with the characters.
