I'm guessing this question has already been asked, and I searched through the threads of season 3, but didn't see any titles that matched my question 😛

So I just watched "Faith, Hope and Trick" and at the end of the episode, Angel returns. How does he return from the hell dimension that he lived in?
It also appears that the ring that he gave Buffy, is connected somehow, like a portal or something? Maybe its because they had one each..

Anyway thats just my theories xD
 
I think Buffy putting the ring down, and then Angel appearing there, is a coincidence. An ironic coincidence. Buffy decides to move on, does this symbolic "goodbye, Angel" thing, and then poof, Angel appears again.

Anyways, I go back and forth on WHY Angel came back. Sometimes I think it was the Powers that Be, knowing Angel would be needed for greater purposes. Sometimes I think Angel fought his way out of hell to get back to Buffy. And sometimes (mostly, actually) it's a combination of the two.

I think it's definitely supposed to be one of those things left up to interpretation. We're supposed to wonder about it.

Thats true, I never thought of The powers that be, it makes sense tho :p
i think it was definately the powers that be. I mean they played such a huge role in Angel that it had to happen that way. I also wonder if once the writers killed off Angel if there was an out-cry and a huge fan base that wanted him back. So once they saw the popularity of Angel they brought him back in a way left up to interpretation and then gave him his own series after this season of Buffy.....could be a coincidence but who knows.

You Have Been Warned...

Since Angel's Shanshu turns out to be a reward for the pivotal role that he plays on the side of the Senior Partners in the upcoming apocalypse, it would stand to reason that they would have the most benefit attained in Angel's return from hell. If anything, the Powers That Be would have preferred that he stay there, even though they have since utilized him for their own purposes.
 
^Intriguing theory, but I think it conflicts with "Amends," where we're subtlely shown, through a snowfall, that the something good wants Angel alive. The snowfall acted as the antithesis to the First Evil, which claimed responsibility for Angel's return in the episode, but was probably just deceiving Angel in order to manipulate him into turning evil. Unless you want to say that
the Senior Partners were responsible for the snowfall and for Angel's newfound hope?

If you ask me, everything strange or mysterious that happens to Angel is just Jasmine's fault. 😛
 
I think her love brought him back. When she put that ring down, when she was back at that place where she killed him she was ready to say goodbye. But Buffy and Angel never said goodbye, did they? In the end of the season Angel tells her he is not going to say goodbye, that he is just going to leave. And he did, he look at her for the one last time, and he left. If he said goodbye, that would mean that it's really over, and it's not. Buffy can't say goodbye, she thought she could, but she got him back. I belive her love brought him back, and I know that a lot of people doesn't belive about that, and that is not the most logical explanation, but no one will ever change my opinion.
 
That scene really surprised me the first time I watched season 3... I couldn't wait to see what Angel would be like now, and what him being back would do to the whole chemistry of the updated Scoobie Gang.

As for what brought him back? The obvious answer is the Powers That Be. But at the time, AtS didn't exist, and I was thinking something evil had managed to free him from Hell to bring back chaos to Sunnydale =P

Not Jasmine herself, but those actually responsible for all of the events leading up to and culminating in her existence and manipulating Angel and his friends and guiding them in the direction directly resulting in the results of Season 5 and Aftermath. As has been revealed in Aftermath, those beings have had plans involving Angel from the very beginning, and might have even been responsible in some way with his initial turning. Granted, that makes for a long, convoluted, drawn out story line, but since both the Powers and the Senior Partners are essentially timeless beings, that presents no problems whatsoever.
