Angel's series mixing with Buffy's series

I have made it through all the seasons of Buffy's show and have bought the first season for Angel's series.
I know Faith makes her way to Angel on his show, Oz shows up, and Willow makes an appearance, but how much of a seperation is there between the two shows?
 
They are completely different. Angel is much darker and more adult for a start. Well, you can see that cos season 1 is an 18.

Wait youre in America so i dont know if theres a difference in yours.

Thats a question actually. Does anyone know why its an 18. It seems to be the episodes Faith is in, eternity and The Ring. Any ideas?
 
Interesting. Are you talkin about eps as they're aired on TV, or DVDs? Buffy/Angel eps were sometimes rated TV-14 in the States, I believe. The WB would always carry a disclaimer, "This show is for our teen and adult audiences..."

The DVDs are unrated in the States.

Faith does have that torture scene with Wes season one...don't really see much, but...
 
The Dvds and videos were an 18. Every other season is a 15. In the video box set its the video with the episodes I mentioned thats an 18. I just dont really see the need for it. The torture scene shouldnt make it an 18. Angel tortured Giles and it was a 15.
 
Buffy started off being set in high school. When you go back to watch Season 1 after seeing all of Buffy and Angel the stories of Buffy Season 1 seem tame by comparison. Try comparing the Master's digs to the Hellmouth shown in Season 7! Buffy grew darker and more adult in the later seasons. Angel started off being set in the adult world, it was definitely a darker series.

In the later seasons of both shows, I had some uneasiness about whether the mystical worlds of the two shows were really being consistent with each other, how well they were meshing together.
 
The shows really aren't the same at all. There is not a lot of correlation between the two shows. The are completely opposite. As said, Angel is a little bit more 'adult'. It had different themes and explored ideas a lot differently. I always thought that Buffy was a little bit more humorous and Angel a little bit more dramatic.
 
I definitely agree.

Angel was more darker and more adult like.

Angel had to deal with the past as well as his future.

I don't think they mesh togethere as said above, but they just use certain aspects to complete a greater goal.

Like bringing Spike to Ats, the used the amulet for that or to re-ensoul Angel, Willow, the only living person to do it.

They used different things for greater purposes.
 
My original post was more along the lines of asking what I need to know when watching Angel with regards to Buffy.
Like when Faith goes to LA after leaving BuffyTown and when Oz ends up in LA, also when Willow goes to LA to get Faith for season 7 of BtVS.

How much do you have to watch/know each series to understand the other one better...
 
You dont really need to watch one to watch the other. there are little bits like you mentioned, but thats about it.

I suppose someone who knows Angel better than I do can give a better answer. There is a good deal of crossing over in Season 1 of Angel-the Gem of Amarra (brought by Oz), Faith coming to L.A. SMG appears as Buffy in two of the Season 1 episodes. There's some minor crossovers in the two seasons after that-such as the characters of Harmony and Drusilla. Then the other major crossover occurs late in Season 4, involving the characters of Faith and Willow and ultimately Angel himself. The final episodes of Season 7 of Buffy are tied to what happens at the end of Season 4 of Angel.

Between the two series I liked and still like BtVS better but finally decided to watch Angel from beginning to end. Not so much because of the plot crossovers per se, but because I wanted to see the complete stories of some principal characters, namely Faith and Darla.

You would still enjoy the ANGEL episodes if you haven't watched the BUFFY episodes. I'm sure that anything you'd "miss" would only be something very subtle that most people who have watched both would only catch if they watched the episodes back-to-back.

I think that is a matter of opinion. I've found some of the storylines on BUFFY - in Seasons 2, 5, 6 and 7 a lot more darker than was shown on ANGEL. Nor do I consider the latter more adult, because the characters are older. The characters on CHARMED are older than the ones on BUFFY, yet that show feels as if it's for 13 year-olds only.

I think Ats is much more adult, but not because of the characters' ages. The show often has more mature themes, IMO. One reason I think that Ats is more mature is because the characters have a more mature outlook on life. They know that there are many shades of grey in the world, whilst on BtVS things always seem more black and white, good or evil, with no in-between.
 
Ok can someone help me? I have two Angel show questions...I never watched Angel (my bad) so I need some help. Oz was heading to LA for a gig I think and was taking the Gem of Amara to Angel...did Angel lose it? Or did he have it till the end? And can anyone tell me which (by title) episodes Buffy appeared on Angel? Thanks all.
 
Thank you very much. Why would he destroy it? It seems like such a great thing to have if you are a vamp.
 
Yes, well Angel nearly lost his life when Spike hired a vamp thug named Marcus and they came to get the gem from him. After Angel managed to get rid of them without giving it up he told his co-worker Doyle at the end of the episode (S1 "In the Dark") that he wouldn't wear the ring, that he had people to help during the night, there were others could help them during the day. In my opinion Angel realized how dangerous it was to have something in existence that could make a vampire invincible and he knew that the world would never be safe unless it was destroyed.

The S1 episode "Sanctuary" is the only other crossover with Buffy herself. It is also an important chapter in the Faith story, a good deal of which is told on Angel. The spinoff series has key parts of the stories of Faith and Darla. Willow drops in occasionally, and plays a big part in the Season 4 episode "Orpheus".
