First of all I don't want for this to be another 'ship fight, so please, no fighting! Best argument of all Spuffy fans is that Spike loved her without his soul, but when Angel lost his soul he wanted Buffy dead. This is what I think: Spike was never that big monster like Angelus was. Angelus was cruel, and he killed everyone who made him to feel like he was human. I think that was because, when Angelus was human, Liam, he was horrible man, but he had no excuse to be like that. But when he became vampire, he had an excuse, he was a demon. When he got his soul, he tried to redeem for his acts, fell in love with Buffy, and when he lost his soul monster in him was angry because she made him feel like a human. And Spike, well Spike loved that world, like he said in season 2, and when he got that chip he felt in love with Buffy. When Spike was human, William, he was romantic soul, a poet, but Liam was scum. Angel fell in love with Buffy because he could see her soul, and Spike fell in love with her because he spent so much time with her. But that is just mine opinion. What do you think? And remember, no fighting!
*starts fighting and screaming* SHIP FIGHT! SHIP FIGHT!
LOL Just kidding.
Anyway, great points, Princess Buffy. I agree with most of what you said. Angelus and Spike
are different. Spike has always been an anomaly in the Buffyverse. The face that he remains relatively the same person, give or take some empathy, with or without a soul, proves this.
Angelus was the worst vampire in history. Giles says so, right? He was the most cruel, heartless monster that had ever been recorded by the Watcher's Council. He tortured people for fun on numerous occasions for a hundred years. Sure, it is implied Spike also enjoyed torturing (His behavior in "In The Dark" and his comment to Buffy regarding "girls Dawn's age" illustrates this) but he was never has bad as Angelus we are lead to believe.
Although I
do believe Angel fell in love with Buffy because he saw her pain, her unusual maturity, and could relate to her struggle, I don't believe Spike fell in love with Buffy
only because he was spending so much time with her. He became infatuated with her at first because she was unattainable, because he wanted to kill her, because she was a
Slayer. After all, he came to Sunnydale originally to kill her. She was just another conquest for him, another desired notch on his belt. It wasn't until later, when he got to know her better, when he saw the find of person she was, that he fell in love with her. As he says in 'Touched' - he'd seen her strength, he loved what she
was, what she did. She became his hero. He looked up to her. This is why he was so surprised ('Oh God, No.') in "Out Of My Mind" when he realized he was indeed in love with her. This screwed up everything for him, the "order" of how the Slayer/Vampire dynamic was supposed to be was reversed.
And yes, although sone of us Spuffies argue that Spike loved Buffy without a soul - not all of us believe he had the capacity to love her at that point. I do, personally, believe he had the capacity to love without a soul (part of his "exception" to the general mythology) but not all fans do. Just sayin'.
And I get what you're saying about Angelus/Angel hating his human self. I'd agree with that. He also hated his father. He felt like a useless waste of a human, drinking and whoring and all that. William was more or less content with his life, I'd imagine. His mother loved him, he lived in a nice house, enjoyed writing poetry. He never knew what he was missing until Drusilla came along and sired him. Until Angelus turned him into the monster he became. Do you remember that conversation Angel and Spike have in "Damage", when Spike is lying in the hospital healing from his hands having been cut off by Dana? Spike says that Dru sired him, but that Angelus made him a monster. Angel says, regarding his victims:
"I couldn't take my eyes off them. I was only in it for the evil. That was everything to me. It was art... the destruction of a human being. Jeez, I would've considered Dana a masterpiece."
Spike says he just liked killing because it was a "party" and "liked the rush." I think this conversation is a great illustration between how different the two vampires were, pre-soul. Both enjoyed killing, but for very different reasons. Perhaps, subconsciously, Angelus was "punishing" his victims for how much Liam hated himself, and perhaps Spike was "living it up" as a killer like he never had as a human.
Buffy taught Spike how to be human. Over the course of knowing her, he came to see that it wasn't so bad to be human, to have compassion and a purpose. I see Spike's journey as similar to Anya's in that way. Both learned to enjoy the company of humans and eventually, to enjoy fighting for their lives.
Regardless, I think you've brought up a very interesting topic, PrincessBuffy. I'm curious to see what others have to say.
