My brother has been downloading the season 2 Buffy The Vampire Slayer. But after re-watching the whole Buffy series, I just can't help but wonder what would have happened if Angelus (not Angel) was the one who is captured by the Initiative and they put a chip in his head instead of Spike's. Would it have made any difference? Such as, if for example, if Angelus was the one with the chip in his head, and not Spike, then could we the audience imagine what would have happened that night (in season 6) if buffy was roughhousing with angelus (not spike) and ends up having sex with angelus (and not spike)? All we the audience have to do to imagine such a scenario is to replace Spike with Angelus in the BTVS season 6 episode 'Smashed'.
Yes I do know that Angel has got his own show during the Initiative. But that's not my point. And I know that Buffy has already had sex with Angel during season 2. But again that's not my point. Buffy having sex with angel is different, and having sex with Angelus would be a WHOLE LOT different. For one thing, Angelus is evil, diabolical, and he doesn't have a soul (pretty much what Spike was to Buffy when she started having sex with him)
Imagine for a second if Angel had not moved to L.A. and he did not have his own show. Imagine if he had stayed back in Sunnydale. And for some reason he ends up loosing his soul and reverting back to Angelus. And this time for some reason they can't restore his soul back. Imagine if he was the one with the chip in his head and not Spike. Would it have made a difference to the ending of Season Six episode 'Smashed'?
Plus I'am a bigger fan of David's acting as Angelus rather than Angel. He seems more hotter and funnier when he is acting as Angelus. So as an audience myself, I always wondered what the ending of Season six episode 'Smashed' would have been like if Angelus had replaced Spike, and Angelus was the one roughhousing Buffy and having sex with her and not Spike.
Wow, thats a good question! I've been wondering about the same thing for a while. And I think Angelus would've still found a way to torture Buffy and the Scoobies.
He probably would've acted as Angel, and would've tried to get the Chip out somehow and then torture and kill them all!
Sounds like a plan that a chipped Angelus would come up with, and honestly a 'defanged' Angelus who tries to act as Angel to gain their trust would defently be something I would love to watch!

I know it's been a while since I posted in this thread, and I know this thread has become a little stagnant. I know a lot of you still think that's it's not possible for Angelus (chipped-Angelus) to have a relationship with Buffy in season 6. But hear me out:
Imagine if during the Btvs season 3 episode 'Enemies', Angel really did loose his soul from the spell that Faith used. And that he (Angelus) was just pretending to act like a souled-Angel spying on Faith on behalf of Buffy and the Scoobies. And that he too (just like Faith) was secretly working for the mayor in bringing down Sunnydale. And that during the Sunnydale-high explosion Angelus escapes. Thereby the audience has something to look forward to for the Btvs season 4, that is, Angelus and his next evil plans for Sunnydale.
There is a pretty huge gap between season 3 and 4 so I can see the writers throwing that little bone to us (fans) to chew on during the gap. Then in season 4 Angelus gets captured by the 'Initiative' and gets chipped. He is unable to escape from the Initiative and he learns some of Maggie Walsh's evil plans for Sunnydale and decides to start working for her by giving her important information on the Slayer and the gang only on the condition that he should be freed. So he starts spying on the Scooby gang. But during the end when Buffy attacks and destroys Adam and the whole 'Initiative' lab is being destroyed, Angelus AGAIN manages to escape.
Then we arrive to season 5 where Angelus starts helping Glory and eventually starts working for her. And Buffy slays Glory, sacrifices herself to save the world and Dawn by throwing herself through the portal. And because she was too distracted trying to save Dawn, Angelus escapes AGAIN!
During the gap between season 5 and season 6 we have quite a depressed Angelus because of three reasons: a) Angelus is getting fed-up of being an assistant to any other BIG-BAD, because all of them end up successfully being brought down by the slayer. b) Because of the chip he is unable to do what he does best (and what he had been doing all these years before he got a chip), i.e., killing, maiming torturing other humans (not demons. What good is that?), drinking regular human blood AND creating and executing all the evil plans. And most importantly c) the one thing he always wanted to do since he lost his soul in 'Enemies' was to personally take his revenge out on Buffy. But now that the slayer is dead he has to live an immortal life never having an outlet for his revenge. He wanted to personally take revenge on the slayer because he cannot forgive Buffy for making him feel human emotions like unconditional love. Human emotions and love are something Angelus clearly despises and hates. It makes him feel human, which he considers as a violation, something equivalent to mind-rape from his point of view. So during the gap between season 5 and season 6 he goes to Africa in search of a Shaman who could get the chip out of his head, but in order to do that he has to fight a demon, ten times bigger, stronger, faster and intelligent than himself. He does agree to fight the demon but it's an unsuccessful attempt and Angelus is brutally thrashed, injured and bruised in the ordeal by the demon, severally weakening him. So Angelus escapes from the demon and Shaman and goes back to Sunnydale with the chip still intact in his head.
Meanwhile it's been many weeks since the gang bought back Buffy from the dead. She is out on one of nightly patrols in search of a demon that she is trying to find and slay. But during this scene, Angelus (a badly bruised, injured and thrashed Angelus-back-from-Africa) comes across Buffy and he is so shocked that Buffy is back from the dead that it kind of momentarily catches him off-guard which Buffy uses as an opportunity to thrash him and take her anger and frustration of coming back from the dead out on him. She starts to punch and thrash and throttle him. The fight scene is interspersed with Angelus questioning Buffy how she came back from the dead and Buffy telling him about how the gang brought her back. She starts ranting in length about her crappy existence back on Earth and that she wished she hadn't come back (all of this interspersed with the punches and kicks she throws at him), but she lets it slip by mistake that she was in Heaven. She wraps up the ranting by stating that the one thing that has made her day today is thrashing the HELL out of Angelus (that too an already badly bruised, injured and weakened Angelus) to which Angelus gets very pissed off and finally vamps out and punches her (with what little strength he has left from his ordeal in Africa), but he realizes that the chip isn't hurting him. But he can't let Buffy know that, so he pretends that it's hurting him and falls to the ground acting as if the chip is hurting him. Buffy is about to throw back a punch but she is distracted by the sudden appearance of the demon who she was actually in search of and for what she was actually out on patrol for. Angelus takes this as an opportunity to escape from her. In the meantime he comes across a woman in an alley and tries to bite her but the chip is still ACTULLY functioning. He comes to know about Warren and the gang and goes in search of them, asking Warren to do a test on his chip. But after Warren does some tests on the chip, he tells Angelus that there is nothing wrong with the chip and that it is not malfunctioning. Angelus goes back to his lair, and tries to read-up and research on the slayers. He has some centuries-old books relating to the slayers. And he finds out that this was the first time in history where a slayer was brought back from the dead and that it has never happened before. He finally reaches the conclusion that there is nothing wrong with the chip, there is nothing wrong with himself, there is nothing wrong with Warren's tests, there is nothing wrong the human woman he tried to bite in the alley, but that there is something wrong with Buffy, in other words she came back less human and more primal and demonic (a more better resemblance to the first Slayer Sineya) than she ever was before she died. He takes this as a happy news, because even if he can't bite/hurt humans, he at least finally gets to take his revenge out on Buffy (refer to the above option 'c'. The three reasons why he was depressed in the first place) for making him feel human. So he decides to confront Buffy. This is where the 'Smashed' Buffy vs Spike fighting sequence begins, only with a chipped-Angelus in the picture (not Spike). Angelus goes to confront her, thrashes her, Buffy realizes that the chip doesn't work on her anymore but it still works on humans. She starts thrashing him back. They both severally beat the crap out of each other with pretty much the same dialogues that Spike and Buffy had, but with a lot more ranting and complaining on Buffy's part about her existence back on Earth and being pulled back from heaven (since that little secret is already out in the open between herself and Angelus). And then before Angelus is about to throw another punch Buffy kisses him and yadda, yadda, yadda (I hope you guys got the picture lol!).
Angelus is not an idiot. He is quite intelligent, so he doesn't immediately set out to kill and torture Buffy while he is having sex with her. Angelus puts two and two together, that is, Buffy being back from the dead, her complaining about her crappy existence back on Earth, the fact that she was pulled back from Heaven and that she has somehow come back more demonic than she ever was before, coupled with the fact that she is kissing him and having sex with him now (which is a quite a big shock to Angelus since he never saw that coming!), Angelus realizes that he is now dealing with a much depressed and darker (and more demonic) Buffy and that she is having sex with him now out of despair and depression. So he doesn't torture her or harm her but instead goes along with the flow, i.e. having sex with her (during the 'Smashed' scene), because he realizes that he could slowly use Buffy's present psychological and emotional weaknesses against her, turning her darker and more twisted, and filling her with more despair (by seducing her), before he finally sets out to torture her (the way he did to Drusilla) sometime during the coming months/weeks.
But there is a catch: when Angelus does try to torture her, something stops him. Because Angelus carries all of Angel's memories of his intense love for Buffy, and all the happy and truly blissful moments Angel spent with Buffy when he was alive, the emotions such as love, that the memories contain, have somehow left an imprint of itself on the soulless-Angelus's mind, stopping him from actually committing the torture. At first Angelus puts the blame on the chip for making him feel more human, but he eventually realizes what is happening to him, the change that is slowly taking place in his non-beating heart. Love is more powerful and stronger than evil itself, and somehow the imprint of the memories filled with love (that Angel felt for Buffy) are starting to influence and corrode Angelus's evil actions towards her even if Angel's soul is not present anymore.
So, what do you all think? 😀 I know this post is pretty big. If a regular fan like me, was capable of re-writing the Btvs storyline to fit a chipped-Angelus, I'm pretty sure that someone as talented as Joss can definitely pull it off, if he had chosen to replace chipped-Spike with chipped-Angelus.
Wow, ya got me speachless here! I mean wow, after reading this I actually cant really believe that it didn't happen in the show.
So okay I'm still having problems imagening a chipped Angelus working for another big bad, since its not really his nature. But other than that, wow,... I WANT a re-write of the show!!!
I allways liked Angelus more than Angel. But I've never really thought about actually re-writing the whole series, even though I did have a story in mind I wanted to write. about Angelus falling for Buffy, but I never had the time to actually go throu with it.
But after reading your post, I'm really having the urge to do so.
That was interesting. It did require a lot of happy accident-type escaping on Angelus' part, though.
As interesting as it was, I think I preferred the show the way it was. I mean, we got to see Angel on his own show. I loved Angelus and his mind games, but *that* many seasons of it would have gotten old. I much preferred the breadth and depth of character that we got to see on Angel. Besides, if this had happened, what would have happened to Fred, Cordy, Gunn, Wes, and Lorne? We might never have met them! Darla may never have come back! Harmony may never have amused us by being an inept vampire receptionist! I loved Angelus, but I don't think I'd leave poor Fred trapped in Pylea just to see more of him.
Besides, chipped-then-souled Spike provided a great character foil to Angel(us). I'm glad that there are two souled vamp boys. I'm glad that they share a history and a few women between them as well as the distinction of being re-ensouled vampire champions who came about the same results in vastly different ways and sport vastly different personalities. I get a kick out of the relationship between the two characters and the ways in which the reflect off of one another and shed light into each others' characters. Without that, I think the chipped-then-souled story would lack a lot of its resonance.
So, while I agree that it *could* have happened, I've thought about it for awhile and decided that I'm glad it didn't. I like the shows as they both happened. I guess that makes me a bit of a purist, huh?
This is a very interesting topic. But I think we have to look at the parameters for the chip first. The chip sends excruciating pain into Spike's brain when he attempts to hurt someone. But we have seen time and again that Spike can hit or slap someone but will get a pain jolt. So, technically Spike could have stabbed someone, but would just have a really bad headache afterwards. Remember in Fool For Love, at the end Spike was going to go and shoot Buffy but was willing to take the pain. It was only the fact that she was upset about her mother being ill and crying that Spike stopped and sat beside her instead of shooting Buffy. Also, remember that the chip doesn't keep Spike from doing evil. There is the issue with the Demon Eggs in As you Were (S6). If he would have stayed with Dru in Crush (S5) he could have still feed on humans as long as Dru killed them. Remember that Spike could also cause tons of trouble even with the chip (see S4 with Adam).
There was this one episode in S4 where Xander and Anya (I think) tells Spike about this monster and Spike listens intently. He then says that he will send it their way when he sees it. I wish I remembered the episode. So he could have caused a ton of trouble between being chiped and getting his soul.
Now to the topic at hand. How many people think that Angelus wouldn't have done all the bad things that Spike didn't do. Angelus is a deadly planner and would have sent all kind of crazies Buffy's way. It would have actually suited him. Spike is more physical. It's about the blood with him. Angelus is more mental (mind games). He would have dug up Joyce's body and left it on Buffy's door step. The chip would not stop Angelus at all. In order to have what happened with Buffy and Spike in Smashed, you would have to rewrite the backstories of Angelus and Spike. And in that sense they wouldn't be Angelus and Spike. They would be totally different from the characters we know. If you get my drift.
It takes Spike's behavior in S5 to let Buffy know in S6 that he has a willing participant. Go rewatch School Hard for Spike's first encounter with the slayer. The way the character was played, it made it easier for the writers to later say that Spike was always in love or infatuated with Buffy (slayers). Angelus treated Buffy like a cat treats a mouse.
Angelus is definitely one of the best villians of the series. I just don't see a romance between him and Buffy. It would be like a romance between the Master and Buffy.
^ I don't think anyone was talking about a *romance* between Buffy and Angelus. That's not what I was getting at, anyway.
I think a sexual encounter may have happened, but not romance. From Buffy's POV, I see it as sort of like
Angel sleeping with Darla in season 2 of Ats.
At the lowest, darkest point of her life, all she wanted was some cold comfort and to feel something -- anything. She was also reckless, little caring for the consequences of her actions, even if that meant her own death. In fact, I think it could be argued that a rather large part of Buffy was longing and hoping for her own death during much of season 6. Angelus, who wears the face of a man Buffy loves and even bears his memories and some of his mannerisms, would have offered Buffy the desired escape. He may have even offered her a blameless death. For just a few moments, though, Buffy could pretend that he was Angel and that she was Buffy, the old, innocent Buffy who knew such intense love and passion. Were I in Buffy's situation and the opportunity presented itself, I think I would have sought what comfort I could find there, too. It's sort of sick and twisted but, in season 6, so was Buffy.
As far as Angelus goes, well, we've all already commented on how much he loves mind games. This would be the ultimate mind game for him. Chipped or not, he could still inflict some major mental and emotional damage on this already near-suicidal Buffy. A sexual encounter or even a sexual relationship would provide him with ample opportunity. In fact, he may even take it as a challenge: see how crazy he can make her without even spilling one drop of blood.
Now, I'm glad the show happened the way it did. I like Angel on his own show and Spike on Buffy, even if he did perhaps hog a bit too much of the airtime. I also don't think you could easily just swap the two characters so that Angelus was the one standing in that alley in Smashed. Angelus and Spike are too different; they react differently to different stimuli. To assume that a chipped Angelus would end up in the same alley at the same time that a chipped Spike did doesn't take into account those differences in character. But if the question is do I think it is in-character for Buffy and Angelus to have a sexual relationship while Angelus is barred from violence and Buffy is deeply depressed, specific circumstances aside, then I think the answer is yes.
RelicI agree to disagree there, I don't think Buffy would have made the same mistake she did with Spike, with Angelus. Two very different charactes there.
Stepping into shoes I can't validate here, so excuse my tresspass....( it's just how I see my hero, Buffy)
When Angelus 'came back' in season 3 in the form of Angel after torturing Giles, murdering Jenny, stalking Willow and threatening Xander...as well as coming as close to ending the world as any Big Bad ever on the show....Buffy hid Angel because she knows as she has shown...that Angelus deserves to die and she should kill him...or others will; like Giles or Xander. But......
She knows Angel is innocent of those crimes so she hides him, but even the specter of Angelus...when Angel fakes it to entrap Faith...pretty much trashes their relationship. I can't believe that even a 'post heaven' Buffy longing to feel would let Angelus live, beacuse of what she knows he will make her feel as it pretains to the scoobies and herself. Buffy found hell in heaven lost, i dont think she's looking to find more of it. She's looking to feel, but not pain...more so companionship.
Spike served that need and I doubt Angelus could.
She knows his MO, destroy her by hurting her loved ones....I can't buy into someone as dutifull as Buffy letting a monster chipped or not...like Angelus live because of season 5 and Dawn and what she would go through to protect her.
Buffy galvanized her reason to live again for her friends...even after tasting heaven.
If she KNEW Angelus was Angelus, I don't think she would hesitate to pull the trigger on him. This is not season two confused buffy any longer.
She might have a bit of a death wish, but she wishes more for her friends to survibe the horros of the hell mouth, of which Angelus is just another part of.
I see no evidence to suggest that she would act otherwise, no matter how much it lumped hurt on hurt. Buffy is not Angel, and I can't fanthom Angelus as her Darla because quite simply....Darla on her darkest day is no Angelus. (to me anyway.)
Wow, ya got me speachless here! I mean wow, after reading this I actually cant really believe that it didn't happen in the show.

That was the same thing that I was trying to convey. It doesn't matter if an actual romance is possible between Angelus and Buffy. But the opportunity for a dangerous sexual relationship is not something that I would put past either back-from-the-dead-Buffy or chipped-Angelus. Plus, like you said palabravampiress, Angelus is way too intelligent to simply start torturing Buffy, the minute she throws herself at him. It would be too easy for Angelus, if you guys get my drift. It's simply not in Angelus's character to take up something that is this easy. But it's definitely in character for him to take up something that is very challenging and attacking Buffy just because his chip doesn't work on her is a "project" that is made too easy for him.
Like palabravampiress said, I too felt that if we had a chipped-Angelus he would have tried to fill Buffy up with more despair by slowly cutting off and making her feel emotionally detached from her ties to her friends and thereby making her more depressed than she has ever been since she was bought back from the dead. It's sort of like this: remember the "Dead Things" balcony scene where Spike is whispering into Buffy's ears about how Buffy does not belong with her friends. Well if we had to replace a chipped-Angelus in this scene, this particular scene would be fifty times more dark, depressing and intense for Buffy. It would be Angelus's perfect opportunity to flex his mind-games-muscles, without actually spilling one drop of blood. It would definitely be in-character for Angelus to take it up as a challenge and rise-up to the challenge.
One of the things about Angelus is that, he was very much obsessed with the idea that Drusilla was a pure, sweet and chaste woman. It was one of the reasons he wanted to torture her in order to turn her evil. In other words, she was his perfect challenge. Making Drusilla undergo tremendous torment and torture and then finally turning her into a vampire (instead of killing her) so that Drusilla would never have peace
from the torment and pain he inflicted on her (because death would be sweet release from all that pain). And when Drusilla was turned into a vampire, she had to live with all that pain eternally (that Angelus inflicted on her). So the only way to stop herself from feeling any pain is to maim, destroy and torture others as well. The idea of changing such a pure, sweet and chaste woman into the most evil and diabolical female vampire of his times, was Angelus's perfect challenge, which he eventually succeeded at.
Since Buffy is back from the dead in a more primal and demonic form than she has ever been before she died. And from Angelus's point of view, the idea that Buffy contains all this dark and demonic energy within herself (which is the source of her slayer strength) but has never lost the purity of her character/heart and continues to save the world and be so sacrificing and good-hearted is a potential that is gone to waste (according to Angelus). So for him, the idea of turning all that dark energy within Buffy for an evil purpose, and corrupting the purity of her heart, will be quite a delicious challenge for Angelus. I'm sure he would not have wanted to waste the opportunity.

I never said that I was unhappy with a chipped-spike. Heck I'm a big Spuffy fan! Even outside of the Spuffy relationship and out of my top 5 favorite characters on the BTVS show, Spike is my first favorite character (and this was after he got the chip). I wouldn't want the storyline to be changed for any reason whatsoever. The climax of season 7 depended on Spike's beautiful sacrifice and I was absolutely proud and thrilled for what he did. The ending of "Chosen" always brings tears to my eyes. Without Spike, the climax of season 7 wouldn't be the same.
And as for our dear sweet Angel, I'm glad he got his own show because I'm a bigger fan of the "Angel" show than BTVS (sorry guys, no offense! 🙂 )
The reason I posted this thread was simply because I was (and I still am) very much in love with David's acting as Angelus rather than Angel (especially during BTVS season 2). And I just wanted to flex my own creative muscles to see how a chipped-Angelus could have been fit into the BTVS story line so I could get to see our little buff-buff get down and dirty with the fab Angelus! 😀😀

Yes, I do think that the chip wouldn't have stopped Angelus from playing his famous mind-games on Buffy. But there is a catch: remember in season 2, when Angelus started playing all his mind-games on Buffy, this is what Buffy has to say:
Giles: He's doing this deliberately, Buffy. He's trying to make it
harder for you.
Buffy: He's only making it easier. I know what I have to do.
Giles: What?
Buffy: Kill him.
Excerpt taken from BTVS season 2 episode, "Innocence"
And another excerpt taken from BTVS season 2 episode "Passions":
Cut to Spike's warehouse. Angelus is being lectured.
Spike: Are you insane?! We're supposed to kill the bitch, not leave gag
gifts in the friends' beds.
Drusilla: (cuddles her puppy) But, Spike, the bad teacher was going to
restore Angel's soul.
Spike: What if she did? If you ask me, I find myself preferring the old
Buffy-whipped Angelus. This new, improved one is not playing with a full
sack. (gets a look from Angelus) I love a good slaughter as much as the
next bloke, but his little pranks will only leave us with one incredibly
brassed-off Slayer!
In other words, by playing the mind-games on Buffy, Angelus didn't realize that Buffy wasn't becoming weaker but stronger.
Now if we have to go by my AU idea of how chipped-Angelus could have been included in BTVS, then in the season 3 episode, "Enemies", when Angel really ends up loosing his soul, he would have played all the mind-games on Buffy. But none of that would deter Buffy from waging the school-war that she did in season 3. And like I said, Angelus would escape during the school explosion. Thereby giving us, the audience, a little something to look forward to for season 4. But by the time season 4 comes around, Angelus is captured by the Initiative and chipped.
Now you have to take into account that a chipped-Angelus playing mind games on Buffy would be very different from a non-chipped-Angelus playing mind games on Buffy. For one thing a chipped-Angelus runs the risk of being on the receiving end of Buffy's wrath (a lot like what happened in season 2), which Angelus won't be able to physically defend himself against due to the chip. Buffy definitely won't hold herself back from an actual fight and from actually killing him. And the more the mind-games Angelus plays on her, the more likely are the chances of Buffy finally dusting Angelus once and for all. So if an actual fight were to take place between a chipped-Angelus and Buffy, Angelus won't be able to physically defend himself against Buffy due to the chip. He would very easily get thrashed and dusted by Buffy. It would be suicidal and foolish of Angelus to continue to play the mind-games-routine on Buffy after getting a chip in his head.
So season 4 and season 5, we will end up seeing less mind-games from Angelus and more of working for some Big-Bad like Glory and Adam (what other choice does a chipped-Angelus have?) He would most probably play mind-games on other humans without actually killing/hurting any of them himself (due to the chip) but letting Adam/Glory do the killing for him.
But a back-from-the-dead-very-depressed-Buffy vs a chipped-depressed-Angelus (who can now freely hit Buffy) who has gotten fed-up working for any other Big-Bads and decides to go to Africa to remove the chip, but fails, would be something else all together.
Just check my previous post for the three reasons why a chipped-Angelus by season 6 would be depressed.
Maybe one of Anya's wishverses (or alternate universe) contains a chipped-Angelus having a sexual relationship with Buffy (hey! a girl can dream! 😀 ) All Buffy has to do is make a wish to vengeance-demon-Anya:
Buffy: I wish Angel had never left Sunnydale!
Anya: **turns around with her vengeance-demon-face-on** Done!
