He loved her, definitely. And his feelings for her was driving him crazy, you can see at the end of I Only Have Eyes For You.
"What was it? A demon?"
"Love!"
"It's so weird... Every time something like this happens, my first instinct is still to run to Angel. I can't believe it's the same person. He's completely different from the guy that I knew."
"Well, sort of, except..."
"Except what?"
"You're still the only thing he thinks about."
"To kill this girl, you have to love her."
He never tried to kill Buffy all those times he could've, and Angelus isn't a stupid vampire, he's very intelligent. He could've killed her right there in Passion, when he came in her room. But instead, he felt the urge to brush her hair aside from her face. He always refered to her as either my love or lover.
In his own sick and twisted way, I have no doubt in my mind that he did love her. I believe Angelus carries love deep down inside, no matter how much he hates it, its there. It was driving him mad, his very real and complex feelings he was getting for Buffy.

On the Darla thing, I don't think Angelus was even close to loving Darla. She was his sire, so naturally they had this whole relationship. Just like Spike with his sire (Dru).

So yea, I don't think Angelus was even close to loving Darla. Still believe he did love Buffy.
Someone at a different board, said something really impressive. Which is where my reasons for Angelus being driven mad by his feelings for Buffy comes in. Here is what she said:
Angelus' motivation for activating Acaltha is unclear. I have my opinion on it, and that opinion is simply that Angelus by that point had been driven over the edge, insane by the feelings that Buffy produced in him.
Angelus had ample opportunity to kill Buffy, yet he did not. Most people say it is because he wanted to drive her crazy the way he drove Dru crazy and then turn her, I do not agree; Angelus is not a stupid man/demon. He would have known rather quickly (by the end of Passion) that Buffy was not going to break so easily; and moreover, unlike Dru, he did not attempt to Kill Buffy's family (Joyce) at any time (Tho he could have snapped her neck in her front yard easy enough) nor did he truly attempt to kill Giles, Willow, Xander or Cordelia.. all of which he could have killed easily at many points.
IMO Angelus knew that killing anyone truly close to Buffy (Jenny Calender does not count because she was out of favor with Buffy one and two because he needed to kill her in order to perserve his own existence) would 'brass' off the slayer to such an extent that he might never get her to recognize him as anything other than a monster (for instance.. a lover).
We have to remember that Angel/Liam and Angelus HATE each others guts with the fiery intensity of a gazillion burning suns. Therefore, Angelus is not going to react kindly to a woman who sees him as that retarded soul thing that has infected his body. But Angelus undeniably was developing very real and complex feelings for Buffy and IMO it drove him over the edge.. and led to Acaltha.
So, if we understand that Angelus had emerging feelings of love.. Spike, who is admittedly Love's bitch, changed and sought his soul because of love or his perception of love (whatever the case may be) then we also have to conclude that given enough significant motivation a demon can indeed choose through its free will to engage in good deeds.
Speaking of Spike, Spike is the most clear example of how the Buffyverse can transform a character from one end of the spectrum to the other. Spike has fundamentally changed and he will never again actively participate in a truly evil act. His love for Buffy was his motivation for the fundamental change.
Angelus, had he been exposed to Buffy for a longer period of time, had he been exposed to her when she was older and better able to handle the gray areas of life; would also have probably undergone a fundamental change do to love. We don't know for sure and may never know but the possiblity exists very clearly. --by Anjel
