Assume that, through whatever chain of events led him to be there at the time, it was Angelus, not Spike who got the chip in Season 4. How do you think Seasons 4 through 7 would be different than what we actually saw? And this is assuming that he stays Angelus, no soul reinstatement involved.

One thing that I could see changing would be the events in "The Yoko Factor" being different one of two ways. Either there would never have been any alliance formed between Angelus and Adam, since we know about Angelus' aversion to partnerships, or the plot would probably have been more of a success, since that sort of thing was his forte' much more than it ever was Spike's.

In fact, if it had been Angelus forming the plot to break up Buffy and the Scoobies, there might never have been any Seasons after 4.

Oh, I definitely agree. Angelus was always much more of a threat than Spike. If he set out to do something, he USUALLY was able to make it happen. Not always, obviously, but he had a much higher success rate than Spike.

I don't know if he would have partnered up with Adam, like you said, not really his thing. But I do think he would have at least gotten closer to accomplishing what Spike was trying to do. In fact, I think Angelus may have even killed Buffy and put up with the pain, maybe. Like, played off kinda helpless because of the chip and attack when it was least expected. We see this kind of cunningness all the time with Angelus.

I think Angelus would have put a lot of effort into removing the chip. It's hard to imagine him accepting the chip and learning to deal with it; that being said I doubt he would have been totally quiet in Sunnydale. I can picture him still emotionally and mentally messing with the scoobies. Angelus was one of the hardest (maybe even hardest) villains for Buffy I face off against, so season 4-7 would have been drastically different had he been around.

Angelus was definitely more into plots and subterfuge than he was any actual physical violence. That's why I think that the chip would have been more of an inconvenience to him than any real restraint. As for Buffy, if he wanted her dead, he could have set some diabolical trap using an overwhelming force of vampires, leaving himself at no risk and without even a minor headache.

I don't things would have progressed nearly as amicably if Angelus had been chipped. He and Spike were very different vampires. Everybody has their own theory on it, but I believe the combination of chip conditioning and being around Buffy had a very profound impact on Spike. I don't think that would have happened with Angelus.

Everyone ALWAYS talks about how Spike was "different" from other vampires, hell I think Joss Whedon has even said it, but I never saw even a shred of evidence to support that. Harmony in S5 of AtS seems to follow a very similar progression to Spike in S4 of BTVS. What I mean is, Spike was a monster, a vampire, but not to the same degree as Angelus or The Master. He did what he did because it was fun, or because he was hungry, or because he felt it would get him further with Drusilla or Buffy. I don't think Spike, while still a soulless vampire, was "evil" to the same degree as other vampires. He was funnier, and may have been the best fighter out of any vampire we see, but he didn't have the same...contempt for the world, if that makes any sense. I can't see Spike doing to Giles what Angelus did with Jenny Calender. Not because he was "good", but because it just wouldn't have made much sense to him.

Angelus however, did. As The First says in "Amends", Angelus was different from other beasts. He killed for sick pleasure. He made it an art, and he enjoyed every second of it. I really feel that Angelus hated humanity; that he saw the human condition as a sick joke. I think part of that stems from Liam having no real place in the world beyond hedonism.

A chip would have, maybe, contained Angleus for a time, but it wouldn't have influenced him like it did Spike. As others have mentioned, he probably would have found a way around it anyways. Even without that though, the circumstances differ. Buffy never knew "William", like she knew Angel, and you can be damn sure Angelus would exploit every second of that.

I can picture Angelus almost relishing the challenge of finding new ways to destroy people. Mind games and emotional manipulation and finding mentally weak but dangerous people and demons to do his dirty work for him.

Buffy would have staked him.

If re-ensouling was absolutely off the table then that would be the only optin she would consider. Chipped or not, she would never view him as harmless, not after S2.

I think Angelus would have ripped that chip out of his head with his bare hands if he had to.

This. Also, the chip is incredibly convenient for Spike, it's the only thing that allows him to get close to Buffy while keeping him not-slain as well. He'd fight tooth and nail to keep that chip in his head post "Out of My Mind".

Please stop mentioning me in posts. Thanks!

I totally agree. Angelus was much more demonic. Spike has always been led by his emotions; they're what drives him to do the things he does. Angelus, on the other hand, seems to be driven by the evil and bloodlust inside him. It may have killed him, but I have no doubt he would have done whatever it took to get that chip out of his head, including digging it out himself.

This is true, too. I don't think Buffy would have taken the chances she did with Spike. She would have stilled seen him as a threat, regardless of the chip.

First off I don't think Angelus would have stupid enough to gloat out in the open about how he was the Big Bad like Spike had done and let the Initiative capture him to begin with. But hypothetically I think Angelus would have still been a threat only because he seemed to be more into psychological terror than actually fighting. I never considered him to be that strong, Buffy had the Opportunity to kill him twice in season 2 but the first time she choked, and the second time, Giles was in danger.

I do think that Angelus wouldn't have been nearly as pathetic as Spike had been with the chip. Spike hardly considered any other options and went groveling to the Scoobies after a couple days of not feeding. Angelus in my opinion would have vanished from Sunnydale immediately knowing he wasn't able to protect himself from the Slayer and found someone willing to remove the chip. (Probably within the same night lol.)
