I think waht she felt for Angelus was the closest thing to love she was capable of feeling, but it wasn't love.

It's like she said herself in "Lullaby":

Darla: Look, I know. It wants to come out. I can feel it. It's ready. It's just - I can't let it. I can't let because... because...

Angel: You love it.

Darla: Completely. I love it completely. I-I-I don't think I've ever loved anything as much as this life that's inside of me.

Angel: Well - you've never *loved* anything, Darla.

Darla: That's true. Four hundred years and I never did - till now. - I don't know what to do.

Angel: Well, you-you'll do the only thing that you can do. - You'll have it. You'll have it and then...

Darla: What? We'll raise it?

Angel: Why not?

Darla: It's impossible.

Angel: This whole thing is impossible, Darla, but it's happening.

Darla: What do I have to offer a child, a *human* child, besides ugly death?

Angel: Darla.

Darla: You know it's true.

Angel: No. What I do know is that you love this baby, our baby. You've bonded with it. You've spent nine months carrying it, nourishing it...

Darla: No. No, I haven't been nourishing it. I haven't given this baby a thing. I'm dead. It's been nourishing me. These feelings that I'm having, they're not mine. They're coming from it.

Angel: You don't know that.

Darla: Of course I do! We both do. Angel, I don't have a soul. It does. And right now that soul is inside of me, but soon, it won't be and then...

Angel: Darla...

Darla: I won't be able to love it. I won't even be able to remember that I loved it. (Starts to cry) I want to remember.

Angel pulls her against him.

Angel: Shh...

Angel closes his eyes as he holds a crying Darla.

I think she could have loved him, although as a vampire it normally was never more than lust, but when she was pregnant with Connor and she had that little bit of humanity in her, it was clear that if she had a soul, she would have loved him.

I never did like that line. I mean in "Heartthrob" he said that the two Vampires were in love. What cause he wanted it not to be love it wasn't now a few eps later? Although I always thought the line meant unconditional type love like a Child or a pet. Not the romantic kind. I mean Darla took revenge for his re-ensoulment much like what's his name did in Heartthrob

I definitely think that Darla loved Angelus/Angel. She indulged him all the time and chose him over the Master. (No contest really, David B. is way more attractive than "Batface" 🙂)

I think she really did love him. Even after about 100 years she still wanted him back. That has to be love. there is no way you could lust after someone for so long.
My thoughts EXACTLY!

I agree to the core. Well said.

I really believe (as do most) that she loved him as much as she could.

I believe she loved him.

As for her running when trouble came, well, you've got to look out for number one, and it only made Angelus stronger because he always seemed to get out of it, i believe so anyway.

I think she cared for him to some degree but I don't think I would call it love.

It seemed to me that Darla saw Angelus more like a companion to travel the world with....and she had fun with him and felt a lot of lust for him but I think that's where it ended.

If we go by all the other terms for "love" on the show, I truly think Dru and Spike were in love. If you compare that to the relationship between Darla and Angelus, well, I don't think she loved him. Angel even told Buffy that she was the only woman he's loved in his entire life.

^ I think this is the case.

I think he lied to Buffy. Although I do agree that Darla and Angelus' emotions can not be compared to Spike and Drusilla"˜s.

I don't think we've seen anything that would truly suggest that Angel lied to Buffy when he said she's the only person he's ever loved.

While I do think that there was a certain amount of caring between Angelus and Darla I don't think we saw anything that would suggest love between the two of them. They had fun together, they enjoyed each other's company and they cared for each other to an extent but neither of them made sacrifices (at least I don't recall any but I could be wrong) for each other and they always looked out for themselves first which is not indicative of "love".

I dunno....maybe it's just me but the idea that they could have been in love had never crossed my mind because I never saw anything that resembled love between these two. I saw lust...but I don't think that should be confused with love.
