Do you ever find yourself getting angry about things? If so, what type of things and what techniques do you use to overcome the anger?

I used to get really angry and frustrated, for example, when England lost at football. I always found something or someone to blame, like the referee, the manager. But then, at this last world cup I felt the same anger begin to arise when the Frank Lampard goal wasn't allowed, but instead of identifying with it, I rode out the anger till it subsided and realised that England fans almost create this victim story for themselves when they lose in order to give themselves something to be angry at, rather than accept they were beaten by the better team on the day.

Another situation of anger I have is when other people provoke you into a reaction, I today, for instance, was in a queue and someone purposely was trying to make me uncomfortable by standing too close to me, but instead of getting angry I recognised it straight away and instead tried to start up a conversation with the person, asking how his day had been, and the tension faded away.

So what situations of anger have other people experienced, and how have you tried to overcome it, or deal with it?

I think a lot of us create victim stories for ourselves in order to give ourselves something to be angry at.

well the Lampard goal should have counted. But I'm German, so I ain't complainin', lol.
Well I've taken to carrying a little pillow or stuffed animal around thw house because my family is so infuriating. I throw it at the wall.

I'm glad I don't have to deal with anger of living with family anymore, the poor stuffed animal though
Well it's hard to get me angry, so at worst I just raise the voice a bit. Nothing really impressive.
But when it's home I'm angry, air kicking always does the trick!

You should join one of those body combat classes, they do stuff like that for a work out
I used to have problems with anger management, I would get angry really easy and throw fits. I was chasing my brother with a golf club when we played miniature golf, several times, and I threw scissors on him, he deserved it though .
My dad would hold me down, so I couldn't move, until I calmed down, and this was just a few years ago, and now I hardly ever get angry anymore.. if I do I just lie down and fantasize about doing something, but I don't actually do it.

I always used to get angry when playing games and sports too, I'd sulk as if it was someones fault if I lost, but now I realise it's just a game, a fun way to pass the time, so not so bothered if I lose sometimes
I get angry at myself for not doing things up to my own standard quite often. I also get angry at the people I live with at uni as they make my life miserable. In order to make it better I usually binge eat or watch Glee (or both).

I have annoying flatmates too, mainly I just drown them out by listening to loud music and stuff
If I get mad I usally:
Sulk in my room
Watch Buffy or any other TV I really like
Listen to loud music
Punch my door frame
I have recently gotten in to MUCH healthier ways of dealing with my anger then I was doing even two months ago.

Here was Ross' attempt at anger management on friends over his sandwich, sometimes it's the little things that get you really angry:

I have been through anger management therapy twice and it didn't do me much good... My first response when I get mad is still to hit someone or something.
Of course you can't just do that though, so I tend to walk away from a situation when something pisses me off.

Mine too. Hitting things and throwing things. hence the pillow/stuffed animal

Sure you can, ma'am. You TOTALLY can hit something or a person.
That reminds me of another Ross moment on Friends, with his failed attempt to hit Joey. Do I watch too much of that programme? Probably 😀

LMAO @ Ross... Ahhh, "Friends".
It depends on what I'm angry about. If it's something I'm personally involved in, I don't deal with anger well. I'm not violent or anything, I just tend to overanalyze everything that led to me being angry and it's just not healthy. These days I'm trying not to engage in bad situations anymore. If it's something else (people in positions of power being vile and stuff like that), I like to rant to like-minded friends, lol.

mayfever agrees: well the Lampard goal should have counted. But I'm German, so I ain't complainin', lol.

A part of me wants to complain that they should bring in goal-line technology, as it effected the game, but the other part of me thinks that Germany would have gone on to win anyway as they were playing the better football overal in that match, also I think it was partly a case of reaping what we sowed for the goal in the 1966 final that was very close to the goalline, and we should have just accepted it for that and got on with the game but instead we chose to make a victim story out of that incident

Oh I forgot, insted of dealing I just repress everthing most of the time. Which is majorly not good. I did this so much last year I got a hetial hernia and could not eat, drink, lay down or even breath with out a sharp pain in my back for three weeks. Hurray.

I'm sure you can find ways of releasing anger and tension, first step is to be aware of what it is that gets you angry
It really depends on who I'm arguing with, but normally I try very hard to remain calm and reasonable. Almost to a fault to be honest, because that way I often get steamrollered and end up taking crap that I shouldn't. I also often use humour/sarcasm to deal with anger, which I have been told is a deflecting mechanism.

I'm usually quite a cheerful and optimistic person, so nothing gets me down for long and I don't stay angry at people. I find the best strategy to avoid conflict is to not assume the worst, i.e. even if someone does something that pisses me off, I tend to assume they didn't do it on purpose or at least give them the benefit of the doubt.

Also, I vent on twitter. A lot.

I've always been a very angry person. I wish I wasn't, but I guess it is what it is. The smallest things can send me into complete rage mode. I have a lot of trouble tolerating differences in opinion on things I feel strongly about, which is one of the worst parts of my anger issues because everyone has a different opinion, and letting it bother me the way it does is really unhealthy. Meh, I guess it comes with the territory of being a manic depressive.

Bipolar karma!
I'm lucky - I don't get angry easily, and almost never at people. Sometimes at my computer, or traffic, but even then it's more like irritation. I think the key is to put things in perspective; AND to realize that most of what you are tempted to take personally was not intended to be personal.

Slamming doors!!! It's tried and true anger management. But I only react badly to anger when I'm with my mom or my best friend strangely enough. I'm pretty much a passive-aggressive person.

Well I used to have anger problems and still kind of do, my friends did to so it was not a good match. The way I would handle it was throwing things at their heads this treatment was returned. My friends think I am bi-polar. I was supposed to go to anger management but didn't, when I left school I got better.
Now when I find myself getting furious I just breath in and out or remove myself from the situation all together. My problem is I can snap in a second from super friendly to a pure rage and when I feel I am provoked it gets worse. I like to think of myself as a work in progress.
What is sad is I am super friendly I just don't like people getting slick as they call it around here.

Well, yeah you can, but according to most countries' laws, you really aren't supposed to 'cause you can be taken to jail. Especially since the only people I tend to be around when I get mad, usually, are my kids. So, no, no hitting people for me. LOL 😉

Studies have shown that dealing with anger with violence doesn't work. It actually makes things worse. Pillows were made for sleeping, not punching.

My religion helps me deal with anger. Life is short... why get angry? Get angry doesn't change anything. While you're angry, the person you're angry at is probably watching Buffy, drinking a beer, and enjoying life.
