Question Annointing the Scythe?

Okay all. I was reading one of Taarako's fics and I thought of something, but I need someone to tell me if it seems logical.

What would happen if Buffy anointed the Scythe in holy water? Do you think it's effects would still be the same when the water had evaporated? Isn't that how the Catholic church blesses objects? I just thought it would be cool if Buffy did that and say a vamp tried to grab the Scythe from her and got a nice holy water burn instead.

Thoughts, comments... rebuttal? 😀

I think just touching the scythe would make any vamp overwhelmed with the feminist power contained therein. Unless it's a female vampire - then she'd just grow body hair more rapidly and be prompted to wear flannel.

Oh, anoint it in holy water? Dunno, that red/silver metal polish looks kinda cheap.

I think since the Scythe was created way before Christianity and other human religions, it wouldn't really have an effect. 🙂

SlayerFae agrees: That's possible. But it wouldn't really make the Scythe a religious item, it would just be blessed with... well blessed water, so it'd be the holy water doing the damage, not the Scythe, right?

Probably...but I don't see the holy water having a lasting effect. It wouldn't really be changing the Scythe. It'd just be kinda like poisoning an arrow? I think it'd just be a Scythe with holy water on it the same way a poisoned arrow is just an arrow with poison. That's the closest analogy I can think of, lol. Sorry it's not very good. xD

Okay sort of love you! That was actually a great analogy and really what I was looking for from either yay or nay response from people. So far, I take your side on this. It was a passing question and I realized I should get some feedback on it, because, like all of us, I have constant Buffy on the brain, and hence always have serious thoughts.... about Buffy. 😀

Hey, for some reason I can think of several examples from Homecoming. The most traditionally symbolic example would be a bear trap: It's the old Vagina dentata, the object shaped like a vagina with teeth that latches onto whatever enters it. And sure enough, Buffy uses a bear trap on one of the Slayerfest participants.

The other examples from Homecoming are a bit more of a stretch, but: Faith uses an STD scare as a way of hurting Scott. Buffy uses a flower as a means of making two of the bad guys shoot each other; the guns themselves are a symbolic phallus, but hey, come on, when it's a dangerous flower that is leading that symbolic phallus into, we have to give the flower credit for being a symbol of a deadly vagina.

And most farfetched of all, Cordelia thinks about using a spatula as a weapon. It doesn't work, and it's not really any kind of genital symbolism, but it's still obviously a feminine symbol. 😉

That's SUCH a good observation. Almost anywhere else in the series, Buffy's weapons are extremely phallic (stake, sword, Scythe, etc), which to me represents that a woman is strong enough to hold a man's position of power. I think the funniest example of her use of those weapons was in Hush when she mimed the act of staking and it looked... well, I'm sure we all know what that looked like. *grins*

But a HUGE thing in the Buffyverse is that the typical male weapon, a gun, is seen as ultimate abuse of power. Throughout all of season 6, Joss made a point of having Buffy say, repeatedly that guns weren't the way to go (Life Serial is a good example), and also in season 2, during What's My Line we have the repeated threat of Patrice, the "cop" who tried to use a gun on Buffy. Even then we see that a gun is considered to be more dangerous, and in fact, Patrice is the hardest of the Order to kill, or at least is the hardest opponent Buffy/Kendra fight.

Even in season 4, with the Initiative, we see that military power (guns and technological weapons) always go to a person's head and they become power hungry, and fear those who wield other weapons. (Colonel McNamara freaked out by the gang's magick tools, Forrest feeling threatened by Buffy, etc) and that never ends well (Uh, ADAM)

Getting back to the original question, simply annointing the Scythe, or any other weapon, in holy water wouldn't do much, if anything, once it evaporated. Having a priest, monk, shaman, witch doctor, wizard, or whatever, consecrate or empower the weapon in some way MIGHT increase its effectiveness, making it something like the (extremely ugly) knife and the Colt on "Supernatural."

I thought it was blessed by the powers that made the thing in the first place. Or did I read too much into Buffy yet again?
