For what is worth here is my first banner attempt using Gimp. Let me know what you think really truly. Erred on the side of smallness might need a magnifying glass to see or enlarge image.

Ohh Ann, I like it! Great start. Seeing so many members starting to make their own banners makes me want to give it a try....

It's a great first try I think. GIMP confuses the living hell out of me, so the advice I'm giving you is likely completely wrong, but in photoshop I like to put a duplicate layer of each screencap and change the setting to 'screen' so it's brighter for dark images or images that have a lot of shadow or darkness. I think that alone would make your banner 'pop' a hell of a lot more.
