The actor's character Rupert Giles rode "the noblest of equines" in the seventh season

Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans will be upset to learn that Rupert Giles' trusty steed has passed away.

Actor Anthony Head appeared as the Watcher in the Joss Whedon's hugely popular series - which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar - and he revealed the sad news of his horse Otto's death in an emotional Twitter post.

He paid tribute to the "noblest of equines" in a touching tweet, in which he shared a shot from the first episode of series seven, which saw him riding his real-life steed.

He wrote: "Otto, the noblest of equines, who carried me so gently, as Giles in Buffy. Your passing, so sad, yet so beautiful x (sic)"

Followers were quick to offer their kind words of support for Head at such a difficult time.

One tweeted: "Aww so sad. He was a magnificent looking creature. My condolences."

Speaking to the BBC in the past, Head opened up about Otto and revealed he was initially unsure about riding in the scene without a crash hat.

He said: "We had a big struggle, because he wanted me to ride without a crash hat, and the reason we have the farm is because a dear friend of ours came off her horse, not wearing a crash hat, cracked her head open and died.

"She left Sarah some money, and that’s how we were able to invest in the farm, so we felt quite strongly about not showing riding without wearing a crash hat.

"I showed Joss me in a crash hat and he said, 'It’s not quite the image I was looking for.' So we conceded and said, 'Alright, but only at a walk.' But, ultimately, it’s only a concession and it isn’t right."

🙁

Awww, that's sad. I wonder how old the horse was... If it was over 18 then it did pretty well. Was a beautiful horse.

I always liked that image of Giles riding a horse. 🙂

I did occur to me that Willow once said she was afraid of horses, so maybe she got over it and went riding with Giles.

Thought that it said "Anthony Head from Buffy The Vampire Slayer has sadly passed away" for a second there and started getting upset.

Still upsetting thought 🙁

*comforting pat*
Beautiful horse, sad he's passed away but it sounds like he's had a fantastic long happy life with the Heads 🙂

It's hard for anyone who has never been privileged to share their lives with a horse to understand the kind of bond that can develop. As much as I love dogs, I can honestly say that the loss of my own horse, who I had raised from a colt, was probably the most traumatic moment of my life, with the exception of losing my parents. We had over 20 years together, and still, it could never have been enough.

My most heartfelt condolences go out to Mr Head over the loss of his very special friend.

Awww, I seen this on livejournal today. So sad. Interesting backstory as to how he came about to owning the horse, too.

AHS is such a sweetheart. At least he can always remember his horse friend when he watches the show.

Rest in peace Otto. Sounds like he had a beautiful life, and got to live to see his old age, it's hard to ask for much more than that even if saying goodbye is always extremely difficult.

Like WA said, no one can describe the bond between human and horse until you have experienced it yourself.

Sad news. But sure Otto had a wonderful life and added a lot of joy to the lives of the head family. RIP.
