Anthony Stewart Head, who played Giles, Buffy's Watcher on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is the latest in a list of Buffy alumni to sound off about the remake of the beloved movie-turned-TV show. For the record: he hates it.

Although Giles was known for his English restraint, Head has no such reserve.

"It's a horrible idea," he said in an interview with the Huffington Post. (WARNING: Although this article is spoiler-free, the Huffington Post article reveals Giles' current whereabouts in the comic book, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8.)

Head said of the Joss-free remake:

"It's a horrible idea in as much as Buffy was a great conceit. It was a great story. ... I don't feel that you can then remake that without the original creator on board. It doesn't make sense. And I mean, somewhere down the line, I suppose sometimes ... I suppose you could, but it never sits very comfortably. With someone like Joss, why would you want to? Well, I know why you want to. You want to make money. As he said recently, 'I hope it's good!' [laughs] I love him."

Head, who spoke about his role as Uther in the BBC show Merlin, even favorably compares his current show with his former series.

[T]he thing that I always loved about Joss' (Whedon) scripts is that everything had a repercussion. Everything had a consequence. And so it is in Merlin. ... You know if someone does something bad, and there is stuff that Uther has done in his past that is bad, you know it's going to come out somewhere. And it really really does.

That includes contentious relationships with users of magic, some of whom are closer to him than he realizes.

Whether or not Uther can maintain his kingdom, or become aware that Morgana's dreams are more than flights of fancy, will be seen when Merlin season 4 resumes in late 2011 or early 2012. The third season makes its American debut on BBC America on January 7, 2011.

It just brings warmth to my hear and joy to me when I read that yet another BtVS cast member agrees that the re-boot should not be done! I have even more respect (and hotts) for ASH now 😀

Good to see his opinion but I do agree this is all about money IMO. The show is not that old and is still pretty relevant.
 
Glad to hear this. I hope all of them will put in their two cents worth on how horrible this idea is.
 
It's understandable for Fury, Maxon, Head, or any of the other people, to say that Buffy, without Joss' input, will fali simply because it just won't be the same as the original character, but that's the real reason that it's called a "reboot" instead of a "remake." I'm certainly not saying that this new movie, if it ever actually is made, which I seriously doubt,will replace Joss' version of Buffy, but it might be able to stand on its own as a completely new concept, which it basically will be. The truth is, no one can, at this moment, predict the success or failure of the proposed movie by comparing it to the TV character, because the two simply won't be the same. It would be like saying that John Wayne or Billy Bob Thornton couldn't play Davy Crockett in a movie about the Alamo unless Walt Disney and Fess Parker were somehow involved in the movies.

But the movie and the series are completely different, why didn't Joss name the show differently?


I think it's stupid of the actors involved to shoot down the concept of a new movie, when nothing has been made, I've never liked Star Trek, but loved the reboot. Reboots can work, A friend of mine does like Star Trek and also loves the newer movie.

I didn't get involved in the series because of the characters or the stories that were being told, I heard about the shows concept and it made me want to watch it, then loved the story.

Now the concept is being used again, it could happen that we like another version of the story.

Comic books do Alternate reality stories or other dimension stories so they can use the same initial concept but tell it in a different way, this is no different.

I don't agree that Joss is the end all of storytellers, so another version of the story can work.
 
I kinda have to agree with BEG, because no matter what ASH or Noxon or Brendon says, it's gonna be rebooted anyway. As ASH mentioned, it is all about the money.

Why weren't we saying this when Batman was rebooted? Or Superman? Or Wolverine?

Because it's supposed to be a completely new concept with a new writer/producer at the helm.

I'm not completely happy with the idea of a Buffy reboot, because of how much I love this show. I don't want anyone to mess it up and screw up what was, and still is, ground-breaking TV. But I'll bet there were comic book fans who were devastated at the idea of a Wolverine movie, especially after learning they were going to change so much, and so much of that movie contradicted what happened in the first X-Men movie.

But Wolverine was still a success and it still made loads of money and the brand made new fans because of it.

The same thing could, hopefully, happen with Buffy. And then we'll get new fans here and the site will run forever.

Sorry, B, you're not getting rid of us that easily, lol. (I'm still not used to calling you Darla, sorry, lol)

I was trying to think of other reboot movies, and my mind went blank! and lol, I keep think Buffy to!
I wonder will anyone from the shows be in the movie? Even a cameo. The money might win some over - god help them when the fans get them 😀. I'd like to see Charisma show up, just a little slap in Joss' face for the whole wrecking Cordelia and then firing her because she got pregnant. " Allegedly!" Yup, that would be fun - but I'm evil like that.
I still look forward to a relaunch. If it's done right, it really could be fantastic, as Black Eye Guy mentioned, I loved the new star trek and I'm a star trek nerd - so I'd love to see a new Buffy I loved. And if it sucks, meh, for me season 8 sucks, so I can deal with crappy Buffy.

That is the thing also; the movie came first (and while not a success it did have a cult following) then the series came which was about a 180 turn from the movie, and it was a success (with a little larger cult following depending on location) so the idea they are going back to the movie doesnt seem wrong at all.

I think the idea of doing a movie would be welcomed, regardless if it were the same cast or not, if Joss Whedon was involved. It would not be "SMG is Buffy not X,Y&Zed", it would be "well, I trust Joss.. Joss is the man, he knows what he is doing" So I dont think the fact the second cast (I almost said original) is not involved is a problem.

In all honesty, I look FORWARD to the movie. I have made it known that the comics and all the fandom fury that resulted from the comics sullied the franchise in my eyes, I hope the movie can revive it and I can look forward to watching an old episode again. I no longer trust Joss, so let someone else have a crack at it.

When it comes to superheroes and comics, there is no finite story to be told. There is a beginning, but how many have a middle and end? With TV shows it's a whole different ball game. The likes of The Sopranos, Buffy, Lost and The Wire..........these shows told the story that they wanted to tell. To the creators of those shows, the story is over, and there's no more to tell (not counting Buffy's Season 8/9 run).

I have to say, this is almost unheard of really when it comes to TV shows excluding Star Trek (technically it's not even a reboot). This whole idea of taking a TV show, rebooting it and making it a movie franchise....it's new ground isn't it? I'll hold fire because I'm not one to judge something before knowing the details. It could be a success.......but it could just as easily be a horrific car crash.

What about The A-Team? They rebooted that this year, and it's been very successful. Unless I'm very much mistaken, there's even a sequel being planned at the minute. Some of the original stars even had cameos.

I admit, it doesn't happen often, and most times it can be a disaster. But for every rule there is at least one exception...maybe this rebooted can be one of them.

Not at all.. just maybe for a 'drama'... look at all the 50's, 60's and 70's TV shows they basically rebooted for movies. Its not unheard of at all. I mean the Honeymooners FFS!! How further of a reboot can you get? Car 51 Where Are You.. Starsky & Hutch... Charlies Angels.. I could go on and on.

Aye, critically panned though. I'd be a bit sickened if the Buffy Reboot ended up being critically panned yet still end up being a success, cos that would mean I'd have to endure critically panned sequels. 😛
 
Oh, this made my day!!! I love Anthony...he's awesome and he's completely right about this. I hope this projects is gonna get thrown in the trash bin!
 
There has been plenty of remakes and reboots of shows. The only odd thing about a new Buffy is that it's technically a continuing series, in comic form. Usually a show is finished before a re-launch or remake happens and Buffy is still going.
Still, I welcome the movie. 🙂

Ah, you've got me there. 🙂 I dunno, it just feels weird to me, like rebooting Friends into a movie franchise.
