Anthony Head Slams Buffy The Vampire Slayer Movie Spin-Off

I don't know if this was posted in the buffy movie but:::

Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Anthony Head will refuse to watch the new movie spin-off of the hit U.S. show - because the first big screen Buffy outing was such a disaster.

The franchise began with the 1992 film of the same name, starring Kristy Swanson, and subsequently spawned the small screen series with Sarah Michelle Gellar in the lead role and Head playing her mentor Rupert Giles.

The cult Tv show came to an end in 2003 but is set to be rebooted with a new film featuring a brand new vampire slayer.

But Head, who was a big fan of the show's lead writer Joss Whedon and his storylines, is adamant he won't be supporting the movie - because Whedon's script for the first picture was changed beyond all recognition by director Fran Rubel Kuzui

He says, "I wouldn't want to see it, no. The Kuzuis didn't do a great job on the movie the first time around. It was Joss' script at the age of 19, but they changed a lot of it. They said, 'Look, we know best and we know how to make this movie,' and it became quite schlocky and high camp. It would be madness to do (the movie) without Whedon. It may be a bit like watching a car wreck." (c) WENN

And it's true...I would not watch it unless Joss had been involved with it...It's Joss or loss.

I'm bored of all the actors attacking this movie before it has even been made.

I WILL watch the movie if/when its made AND I will go in and accept it on its own merits, not because of who is and isn't involved.

I can make my own mind up, thanks.

Yeah, I'll probobly go see it but to be honest my expectations are low. Hopefully, they'll use this opportunity to make the film better than it originally was - not worse.

Still. People have strong feelings about Buffy. Especially people who worked on the show for years, like Anthony and James. They're entitled to their opinion.

No one is saying they aren't entitled to their opinions, the point is they shouldn't try to force it on the others.

Just because the original Buffy movie wasn't a huge hit (I actually still like the film) doesn't mean this one will be bad.
I got bored of SMG constantly using the original movie as a reason she wouldn't do it, and I get bored of these actors, who are probably more frustrated that they won't be involved (and better yet, their characters not even being part of that world) in what could potentially be the thing alot of these types of actors crave, that big successful movie.

I don't think that making a comment on it, which is all that ASH and James Marsters have done, can be considered as them forcing their opinion on any one. It's not like ASH said, 'if you're a real Buffy fan, then you won't watch it' is it?

And even though you got 'bored' of hearing about the first movie being the reason SMG didn't want to it, doesn't mean it isn't the actual reason! I also really don't imagine ASH being one of those actors that you think is only annoyed about not being involved; he's always been pretty successful. It's a bit of a cop out to try and dismiss someone's opinion because you think it shows they're being bitter.

And to be honest, so what if they are bitter! I'm bitter about it. If I don't want to see a show that I love being 'taken over' (for want of a better term) and made into something else so then I can understand why the people who were integral in making me fall in the love with the show, feel that way too!

The movie was the main reason I watched the show in the first place. I still enjoy it, it certainly hasn't aged very well, but it has it's moments.
I'll give the movie a go. And the actor's opinions won't have any impact. The way I see it, some cast members want to cling to the Buffy name, while others want to move on from it.
As for Joss, he tends to complain about most of his movie's being drastically changed. I like Joss, but he seems like the kind to blame others for his failings, instead of himself.
I'll give the The Kuzuis a chance. If it sucks, well at least it's not a continuation of the tv show.

By being so visercal in his comment, he is obviously pushing his opinion onto the fans of the show. Just because he doesn't outright say it, doesn't mean thats not whats happening.
Just look at the comments posted around the internet after an actor has this opinion.

SMG wanted to distance herself from Buffy - thats fine, but to constantly use the original film as a reason, when a new film wouldn't have had the same issues as the first, isn't a justified reason.
The problems that seem to be the issue with the first feature, the Joss script redone, Donald Sutherland, the high camp - would they have been involved in a spin off movie?
No because Joss would have more control, Donald Sutherland would be no more and the high camp would be tempered by the people involved this time, so, using the original movie is not a valid excuse when SMG was using it.

Also, ASH hasn't "always been pretty successful".
The only two things since Buffy he has done that have really been of significance is Repo, which wasn't that big, and Merlin.
Even his stint in Little Britain isn't that great.
Before Buffy, well his greatest hit is an advert for coffee!

Success in the acting field isn't just getting a job, its about developing a role, making it something that the people take to their heart and maybe even spend time thinking about.

As for the feeling bitter - big deal. The movie came first anyway.
You don't like the idea of it, don't watch it, no one will force you to do anything.

This another example of how you think that you're way of looking at something is the right way! You might have read into ASH's that way, but I didn't. I didn't get the impression that he was suggesting that. Maybe that's just what I want to see, but I think that you also want to see that he is being negative and trying to force his opinion. It's swings and roundabouts really.

I'm very much aware that the movie came first, I don't live under a rock! And thankfully I didn't watch it before the series came out. Because it would have really put me off.
And thanks, I decided myself that as I didn't like it, I wasn't going to watch it. That was kind of my point!

/me throws a bucket of cold water over EB to wake him up.....Flannie piees i think you're spot on with everything you've said!!

ASH didn't like the first movie and now he's just stating that he doesn't believe this one would be good either. I really don't understand how that's forcing your opinion on others. Do you think he should have lied about how he feels about it? Or perhaps told the website not to publish the story?

Also, I know negative karma can be used to legitimately disagree with someone but stuff like *yawn* just shows what the real reason behind it is.

Edmund Blackadder disagrees: Actually the disagree has to have something written in it now, otherwise it would have been blank. I *yawn* because there is nothing else to say!

If Buffy made that adjustment, don't you think she means that people are required to give a reason for disagreeing instead of just typing in something random?

ASH is voicing the opinion that seems to be decidedly in the majority among Buffy fans... that we'll never consider legitimate any "Buffy" movie made without the input, or at least consent of the man who created her and made her a success, despite the best efforts of the people now threatening to make this movie to spoil it. That seems to be the strong feeling among those people who care one way or another about the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" brand. Not an attractive development for the Kuzuis and Vertigo Entertainment if the brand becomes poison in your hand to the very people it's supposed to attract.

I don't worship Joss Whedon as a living god. But the only Buffy I care about makes her permanent address inside his head.

My reason is in my post, I don't need to further justify it.
I disagree with something, thats what I do - I don't have to write elaborate commentary on why.

You have an issue with it, complain to Buffy and I will do what she tells me!

Not that I don't think Anthony has a point about the last time the a Buffy movie was done, but I kinda have a soft spot for that movie. I like campy movies! I love Rocky Horror Picture Show, Headwig and the Angry Inch, and other campy movies like that. To me that was part of the first Buffy movies charm and while it wasn't the greatest movie ever, I still thought it was good and worth watching.

Having said that, I can see why the actors and a lot of fans would be angry. Joss Whedon did such an AMAZING job with the series on TV and this kinda seems like they are taking his vision and stomping all over it. Like those 7 years didn't matter. I know that is NOT the creators of the movies intentions, but I can see how to a lot of fans and the actors of the show it could be taken that way.

RHPS is not campy! It's frakking fantastic!

Exactly.

I know that is NOT the creators of the movies intentions,

No, their intention is to make a quick buck off someone else's work. That's nothing new in Hollywood, of course... but none today, thank you.

Im so glad some of the Buffy actors are speaking up about this because I think after all the years they put in to that show with the writers and Joss this is a joke. You can't make a Buffy movie without some input from the man who created it. Buffy is Joss's baby and to hear the people who helped make the shit movie are going to recreate it is pretty shocking as its never ever going to live to up to what Buffy was and still is now.

ASH has a right to voice his opinion because he's thinking like most of us, this is a train wreck waiting to happen already. Ok some are obviously going to give this a fair go and I say fair play to them but for most of us I think its a big slap in the face and I think ASH feels that a lot along with Joss and the other Buffy actors who have heard about this. I really do hope this new movie tanks.

Why ASH have to say anything like that? Would he like if someone publicly said that about something he was gonna be in?
Sounds like fans want Buffy to stay as it is forever, just the 12 seasons of Btvs and Ats! I'm a true Buffy fan and i love that its being brought back, but i'm not gonna diss the movie before its even been seen. Kuzuis taking the initiative, im happy somebody is.

I COMPLETELY AGREE!
I have mixed feelings about this. I would prefer if the shows cast and it's creator were involved but I guess it would come down to the trailer to decide for me wether it looks like a worthy flick to see. I'm old enough that I saw the Buffy movie when it was out in theaters and when I heard they were making a show of it I didn't watch initially because I thought it was going to be a rehash of the stupid humor the movie produced. So that was my loss. Because of this I don't see why I should judge the movie before I've given it a chance to prove my feelings wrong. However, I don't think that ASH or James were in the wrong to state their disappointment in the project. I completely understand where they're coming from. Besides, I see more opinion forcing here than I do in either press release given by said actors.
