Anthony Stewart Head Slams New Buffy Movie

ASH and James Marsters are as much fans of the show as us, and most fans aren't liking the idea. 😉

:angry0:I can't believe it! No SMG?! No Faith?! No Willow?! No Scoobies?! Probably go see it but I'm going to be hard to please! :angry0:

Yup, James did say it'd suck as well... he told me himself at the Fango convention... So it's good to know how some of the cast feels, and that they aren't afraid to hide it either.

ASH rocks haha.

I am interested to see who else will come out and say something.....

Go Anthony!

How can they make a movie anyway...doesn't Joss own the Buffy rights? I think he should sue if it goes ahead.

My problem with this movie is that it is taking advantage of something others did. If it swapped actors I would not mind, if it dealt with different characters in same world I also would not mind. But this has nothing to do with the series from what i heard...except name. If they going to have no connection with the series then why does Buffy have to figure in it? That is why this movie annoys me regardless how good or bad by any metrics it is.

As usual, I have many jumbled and conflicting views on this.

I will agree with EB that it's a little tasteless to have the actors of the series out there bashing the film before it's made. There are people who would simply say, "If Giles and Spike think it sucks, I'm not gonna see it" regardless of how good or bad it is.
Personally, I don't have a LOT of faith that it's gonna be earth shatteringly fabulous, but I probably will see it. Although, I probably WON'T go to the theater. Maybe if Joss was doing it, but it takes a lot to get me to go to the theater. But, I could do DVD.

On the other hand, I'm holding out hope that all these publicly tasteless comments might wake up these people to a few facts.
Like, I'd like them to be FULLY aware that although the movie wasn't evil, that the actors and fans know that the script was chopped all to heck and that the success of the show was based on the SHOW not because we all loved the movie to death and just kinda "dealt" with the direction Joss took with it.
As ridiculous as it sounds, the fact that they're even contemplating this movie makes me think they REALLY don't get that.
It was a cute, campy movie and the show was a little campy too. But, there is a difference. It's not really like people jumped on the show on the merits of the movie like they would if they did a show about Rocky Horror.
If anything, I avoided the show for years BECAUSE of the movie. And I kinda liked the movie on it's own. I watched it quite a few times on TV. It was a rather nice "Rainy Saturday Afternoon At Home Movie".

Anyway, if hearing the fans and the cast (because, let's face it, they're louder than us) groan about the old movie vs the new movie vs the show, perhaps they'll put some actual THOUGHT into the movie. Try to keep it in keeping with the show (especially if it's a prequel) and in their own way, try to keep it up to quality. If it makes them put more thought into it than just throwing a script and cast together because they think anything Buffy will make them money, then I can handle tasteless comments from the cast.

Mainly, the LAST thing I want is a movie that is WORSE than the first or gives Buffy a worse "that's a stupid teeny bopper show with no merit" name than it already has out in the world outside the Buffyverse and it's friendly folk.

That's all, decode it if you can! 😉

First of all, and I know I keep stressing this, but the TV series came second!

Secondly, Joss couldn't make this film, not now.
If he made this movie he would have to make it accessible enough for far too many people.
1) The people like us, the neurotic fans.
He would need to do a story that would be a continuation to the story that we already know - plus he would have to juggle with the comic book.
2) The TV fans. These guys who never read the comics and have no idea what is happening in them.
3) The casual viewers. The people who know a little about the show from watching it but not really whats going on.
4) New audience.

In 10 years time, that would be fine but now, no thats a nearly impossible feat even for the 'wonderful' Joss Whedon.

So, if he isn't involved, well none of his characters should be either.

Just because someone else is giving their interpretation of the story doesn't mean it will be bad - on the contrary, these guys will be acutely aware of what they are up against and if they choose to do it, they will get the best people involved.

This was a point I made to the hubby last night. Wether we like it or not the show we've come to know and love with all of it's wonderful characters and plot lines did in fact come second to the movie. So even though it would seem that we need to carry on with where the show left off I have to agree that there are many reasons it would be quite difficult to do so. Besides, nobody says that somewhere down the line the movie we all hope for won't be made. Until then, I'm down with seeing it...even if I very well may be hanging my head and weeping through most of it. I just hope they take a more serious approach this time.

Good in theory, but doesn't always work in practice. Hollywood has a tendency to screw up these things.

Also, they don't have to contend with the comics. How about doing a movie FROM the comics. Like take the first three, first four or whatever and make that into a movie. Sure, people who have read further than that would know what is to come, but they'd probably still go just to see what they read into action and see the actors again. I think that would take all the worries about the comics out of the way. Granted, its not technically new, but I would SO go to see the comics played out in the theaters.

Well that same argument could be used if Joss was making the movie, its already made by some fans over the comic, so I don't buy it as anything more than fans trying to justify their 'hate' without having to give a proper reason.

This movie has an enormous amount of pressure on it, thats fact, but if the people who make it simply get the best people (outside of the Whedonverse) involved, they figure out what made 'Star Trek' so good, they could have a winning formula.

Umm, if they make a film about the comics, they still have to contend with them.

You have missed the point completely.

The point is that Joss would want to continue his story.
OK, fair enough, but how does he attract a new audience?

The previous Star Trek films of the 90's, the X-Files movies, Serenity and pretty much every movie based on a TV show that is deemed a continuation of a story makes some money, but thats largely the devout fans.
They rarely get the mass audience.

If a Buffy movie is to be made, it has to be as far away from the TV show as possible so it stands a chance of gaining the mass audience.

You make a movie for the fans, only the fans will watch, you make a movie for the mass audience (provided its good) and you get both audiences.

The end of the day, the movie will or won't be made based on decisions of people who have very little interest in what we say on here.
We can bitch as much as we like, we can even refuse to see it, but we won't stop the movie being made.

However, as I said before, we do have a little bit of power in the fact that if there was a big enough fan outcry for something to be included in the movie, the execs would listen because it would only benefit them to have us onside.

OK for the record I am not "justifying" the "hatred" towards the movie as you seem to imply. I never once said that I am not going to see the movie or that I hate the movie because Joss Whedon wasn't involved. I was simply trying to make that point that just because it is a "new take" DOESN'T mean that it will be a good movie nor does it mean that the masses will go see it.

You make a movie for the fans, only the fans will watch, you make a movie for the mass audience (provided its good) and you get both audiences.

I'm not sure this is true. You risk pissing off a lot of the die hard fans when you do something like this whether YOU EB think it is fair or not, it can and will piss people off. A lot of those "die hard" fans will resent what is being done and not go to see it. Some of them will still maybe, but I'm willing to bet a lot of them wont. Yes it worked for Star Trek, but that in no way means it will work for every other movie. Also, the way I understand it, the Star Trek movie was a prequel. A lot of the reason that movie worked is because of that, not because it was a new take, but because it is basically star trek the early years.

The end of the day, the movie will or won't be made based on decisions of people who have very little interest in what we say on here.
We can bitch as much as we like, we can even refuse to see it, but we won't stop the movie being made.

Pretty positive everybody knows this. People are going to bitch because they want to. I really doubt they are expecting to change anybody with powers mind. They just want express their opinions on Buffy board and get the word out to other fans. Whats wrong with that?

We could go around and around like this forever, but the simple truth is the arguments people are using as to why they think this movie will be bad is some misplaced loyalty to a person, not to the story.

People like to pretend that they are openminded, but the fact that you, along with others, have already condemned this movie, shows an unwillingness to give something a change.

Amusingly, I was attacked because I did not intend to give Dollhouse a chance (even though I did - and was still attacked for my opinion) and here people seem to be doing something similar.

Simple truth is, a film will be made - watch it or don't. You have lives that apparently don't revolve around this, so why bother spending so much time anonymously attacking something that is in its very early stages.

Well you see I can use something recent to back my claim up - can you?

When it was announced that Star Trek was to be rebooted and that JJ Abrahms was to direct, there was a large part of that fandom that was annoyed, particularly as he promised to make the movie more mainstream and accessible.

That movie has since gone of to win both critical and audience acclaim.
Granted no film will ever get 100% of the audience to love it, but this film managed to appease MOST of the hardcore fandom that had an issue - I should know, I am one of them.

The fact is, the mass audience is far bigger than the fandom audience and the simple truth is, most of the people on this forum would go see it IF the mass audience liked it.

The problem is that its a waste of time and people begin to sound like pathetic little children, particularly if their arguments are as weak as the ones we are seeing.

For so long being a fan of Buffy has been some what of an elite club, there is a real feeling amongst alot of fans that they are better than the rest of the population because they 'missed' something that the fans understood.
Many posts on this forum come across as members believing their own hype that they are intelligent while the rest of the TV watching community need to be fed their entertainment in the form of reality TV.
You like to feel superior, you like to feel better and if this movie is being made and the mass audience love it to the point of it being a huge hit, then you're not special anymore.

Once again I. AM. NOT. CONDEMNING. THE. MOVIE. I'm simply trying to get YOU to see it from another point of view, which you seem to be unable to do. So, after this I'm pretty much done with this thread.

Because they can. Because they have every right to do so on a public board. And because they want to. And you think it is a waste of time, fine! Doesn't matter, people are still going to do it. And you have ever right to argue that people are wasting their time.

The problem is that its a waste of time and people begin to sound like pathetic little children, particularly if their arguments are as weak as the ones we are seeing.

So don't read them! You have a choice in how you handle this you can either take them as what you think they are and just blow them off, or you can take them seriously and attack them. You seem to have taken the latter. Like it or not EB you can't control what people do, NOR CAN I, and if you really think that going on and arguing against doing that will stop that, well be prepare to be disappointed.

I am sure that this is true for some, but I willing to bet for the vast majority it isn't true. Once again, I am yet to declare whether I think this movie is a good idea. I am simply trying to get you to see ANOTHER point of view. Trying to get you to see where others are coming from. And apparently failing.

Trust me when I tell you, that I see your side as well as the other. I am open minded in most everything I do. I weigh both sides and try to see where they both are coming from. You don't seem to want to do that in this case. You seem to believe that your word is truth and that everyone else is a "child". You want to think that I'm against this movie? Fine go ahead, but in truth I am personally very undecided as to whether this is a good idea.

Because you've shown yourself to be able to view it from another point of view?
Why should I change my point of view that is one of giving this a fair chance on its own merits, rather than attack it before its even been confirmed?

This isn't a matter of it being someones right, its a matter of it being a futile endeavour.
Your point is wasted because to be honest you don't seem to have a clue whats going on here!

Do you even have a point?
I haven't said I want to control anything, I have merely pointed out the actual fact that posting comments on a forum is futile.
I will read the comments and even point out why that stance is wrong because obviously people agree with me - look up and you'll see that.

Failing miserably because where I come from, having an open mind and judging something based on its own merits is deemed a good thing!

I have to question why I should 'trust you' when you say that because your entire stance in this conversation has been weakly attached to the opposing view anyway.

You can sit and make assumptions if you like, to be honest I don't care, but I have attained my opinion and I will keep it as it is until the time I see something official and then I will use that to further weigh my opinion, NOT what some anonymous people on a forum who have absolutely no clue tell me.

You really ought to read my comments before you make some of the comments you have made because it shows utter ignorance on your part of what I have actually said.

While I do feel a sense of loyalty to JW because of the enjoyment he's brought me over the years, and the fact that I think he's one of the best storytellers out there, my opposition to this movie is based on a basic belief that the person who created a character and spent 12 years telling her story (to great acclaim) has acquired the ethical right to guide that character's story as he wishes.

For me, this all comes down to one question: do the Vertizui's intend to have Buffy be the star character of this movie? If not, there is no problem. Telling an original story, with an original character, in a borrowed world is okay with me.

But Buffy is Whedon's creation. He invented her, he guided her story to the present day, he oversaw everything that made her a worthwhile character. Yes, he did it in collaboration with good writers, good actors, good directors... all chosen by him to help him carry out his fundamental vision for the character. Buffy is HIS character... by ethical right, if not legal right.

The Kuzuis bought JW's original script, muffed it, and then sat back and collected a paycheck for 12 years off the creative labors of other people. For them to now suddenly claim the rights to Buffy is unjust.
