Anthony Stewart Head Slams New Buffy Movie

As a Star Trek fan, I went into the movie assuming I was going to hate it. BUT I was pleasantly suprised that they did a fabulous job on it. So I'm using what I learned from that experience to inform not hating this movie before I know anything about it.

Not going to keep repeating the same arguments over and over again.

I seem to be in the minority when I say that the only real Buffy comes from Joss. So be it. Whenever I find myself in the majority I start to worry.

It seems we've reached the point where branding is more important than quality, with everyone saying they're going to see this movie just because it says "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" on the poster. So, whether it's a good movie or a bad one, it's going to be successful. I guess that's just the way it works now that all the world's stories have already been told.

There's no point in railing about how the world isn't the way I want it to be. I just hope that when the time comes, there's a forum somewhere where we fans of Joss's Buffy can talk about it without having to wade through thread after thread about how awesome this new one is.

I've got my Buffy, thanks. There's plenty of life left in her, and I'm not in the market for a new one.

WOW, this comment 100% backs up my comment

For so long being a fan of Buffy has been some what of an elite club, there is a real feeling amongst alot of fans that they are better than the rest of the population because they 'missed' something that the fans understood.
Many posts on this forum come across as members believing their own hype that they are intelligent while the rest of the TV watching community need to be fed their entertainment in the form of reality TV.
You like to feel superior, you like to feel better and if this movie is being made and the mass audience love it to the point of it being a huge hit, then you're not special anymore.

Its amazing, its only really people who love movies or love Buffy (and lets face it, thats gonna have a huge crossover) that know or care about this, and if this forum is anything to go by, then the people willing to give it a go on its own merit, who haven't outright condemned it aren't in the majority, yet you, Andrew Crossett, still need to feel part of that elite club.

Fine. Put me in an elite club if that's what you think you need to do.

The way I feel is the way I feel. I think I'm entitled to that, just as you are entitled to go see a movie based on any criteria you like.

I think another issue may be that a Cheerleader turned Vampire Hunter is a stupid silly idea. That's not the reason the show has a following, it has a following because the concept was executed extremely well with a great ensemble cast.

The only thing the movie will have in common with the show is that stupid concept. No Willow, Xander, Giles, Spike, Angel, etc. I've heard they can't even use Joyce, since Joss lays claim to her.

I'm going to watch it, but I'm going in knowing that if it is good, it'll be for completely different reasons. It'll be like the Star Trek thing, I get the impression that the hardcore fans like it far less if they went in with expectations. I liked that movie, maybe because I'm not a fan of the series.

The concept of the Buffy movie isd no sillier than a hundred movies that have been made and are successful.

Most comic books have a similarly silly base idea and none of them had 'Willow, Xander, Giles, Spike, Angel, etc' to make them good - no, what they had was a good writer who took the story and made it entertaining.

Ohh and as said before, if you're gonna make new claims, you really should post a link to something at least official sounding because I am sure many people here would like to know where this 'No Joyce' has come from, especially as her parents were in the movie.

I don't need to do that, you're the one doing that with comments like "I just hope that when the time comes, there's a forum somewhere where we fans of Joss's Buffy can talk about it without having to wade through thread after thread about how awesome this new one is."

Because I don't want to talk about that Buffy. I want to talk about this one.

Sorry, but being a fan of one specific thing rather than another doesn't make me an elitist. Not that that term has any meaning anyway... it's just a nice perjorative-sounding word people use to mean "someone who values different things than I do."

Buffy's parents were in the movie, but they had no names. The names "Joyce Summers" and "Hank Summers" were specific to the TV series, as indeed was the name "Summers." (Buffy had no last name in the movie.)

I am glad Joss is being so noble and taking the higher ground with his comments so far. He's being much more calm about the whole thing than I would be if someone stole my idea and tried to capitalize on the sucess of something I had worked so hard on. But ASH and James don't have to be so tactful with their comments because they were not the creators of the show and therefore can express the disgust that many of the fanbase feels about this. Their comments seem meant to support Joss rather than to try to force their opinions on the fanbase.

I think it's great that many fans are going to see the movie and give it a fair chance. I won't be one of them. Hollywood has released too many strings of sequels and remakes that were a waste of my time and my money. I'm jaded, I admit, but for a reason. The Kuzui's have an even worse track record than most Hollywood producers. Why can't they do something new? I wouldn't be the fan of Joss's that I am if he hadn't ventured outside of the Buffyverse (Firefly, Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible, etc.).

I'm still not sure that this movie will even get made. With so many fans, like me, who have no desire to see another Hollywood remake, especially with no Sarah or Joss, I can't imagine a studio going through with the project. Look how long Wonder Woman was in limbo before getting axed. But if it does get made I too hope that I'm wrong and "it's cool."

I'll be surprised if it happens in general...but its one thing to have none of the original cast from the show...but to not have Joss Whedon backing it is a big no no. Im not going to lie. If it does happen, i will watch it, give it a chance, and then mock incessively when it sucks the big one. and whats this BS about Megan Fox. I might boycott if that goes down. lol

But... they killed Spock's mum. Fundamental booboo that I just couldn't get over ('and don't think I didn't try!'). They didn't even have the basic manners to use time travel to restore her to life. It's like, 'oh, let's have a young Columbo movie, and kill off his wife'. No! Bad producer!

Agree with not hating a movie until given cause, though. If only because the expression 'haters' is being done to death in critical circles, being handed out to anyone who registers even the slightest reservation about a film or an actor.

New buffy movie?

Did i miss something?
A new buffy movie, without the original cast?.Or did i get it
wrong.Someone fill me in on this.::huh1::

---------- Post added at 04:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:46 AM ----------

If this proposed movie goes ahead,it wil be a new start.
I will not judge it on past failings,or successes. Its just a new
begining for the character/s
Startrek have done it recently, and the film rocks in my opinion, and i loved the original cast to death.
I was like'dont fix whats not broken'.
Now i'm glad they did.
The trouble is some people dont like change(me included),especially when it comes to much loved characters and shows, but with this i think to myself
who cares,i'll still have our favourite version, let this film
have its time.
Besides joss wasn't interested before this as far as i know.
He kept saying'I love these characters,i love these characters',then firefly came along(thankfully,it filled a void)and doll house, yeah he really loved 'em didnt he.Maybe once he did,or maybe he thought he'd go back but missed the boat?

At this stage, I'm still annoyed about the idea of the Kuzuis thinking of doing a remake--I get the impression that they're trying to bank off of the success of Twilight. (Vampire "saga" hitting big with teens + Kuzuis having some sort of rights to the Buffy franchise = duh).

It peeves me that, as far as I know, the Kuzuis had nothing to do with the show... yet they got an EP credit every episode.

Anyway, I'm in agreement with ASH. Making a movie because it has franchise potential doesn't exactly sound like the best idea to make a movie, and doesn't sound like the kind of Buffy I want to see. I want to see Buffy because Joss has new stories he needs to tell, and what not.

I'm not ruling out watching a new Buffy remake sans Joss, I just wouldn't looking forward to it the way that I would look forward to a new Buffy movie that followed the TV show.

Just a little rant

I agree on the fact that hollywood keep on making crappy remakes of favorte films(The day the earth stood still, journey to the bottom of the barrel, and more recently the land of the
lost, which in my opinion should have stayed lost.
And now,on the back of these spectacular flops, what do fran and rubel do?
They go and remake one of the most iconic and loved shows ever into a film.I mean why?
Because vampires are back in the loop again.I know certain people on here will say"They've never left the loop",but because of twilight, moonlight, and true blood, film makers must have been rubbing they're sweaty hands saying,"Vampires, thats a popular subject, lets make a film"
"Sod the script,i'll just bung three or four earlier films together
an'see what we get."::grrr:::fuming::complain:😡
Crap thats what you get(usually).
Leave the bloody stuff alone, and get your own ideas.
I know i said i wasn't bothered before,but i've changed my
mind since then.
RANT OVER

The day the earth stood still is sooooooooooo crap
Yeah!

What's with remakes Like Batman Begins. Weren't the 1940's serials good enough? Or the 60's movies and tv show? Or the 80's versions? Come on, how many times is it going to be remade.

Wasn't the classic 1925 version of Ben-Hur good enough? Did it really need to be remade in the 50's with Heston?
Speaking of Heston, was a remake of Vincent Price's The Last Man on Earth really necessary? The Omega Man? Really? Only remade a mere 10 years later? I am Legend? Was this really necessary for a new generation? Sad, sad.

The Magnificent Seven. An unashamed remake of Kurosawa' film The Seven Samurai made only 6 years earlier.
And for Kurosawa (who seems to get ripped off a bit) there's remakes of his Hidden Fortress (Star Wars), Yojimbo the Bodyguard (A Fistful of Dollars) as a couple more examples.

Cameron remade The Thing? Whatta hack.

Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2. Isn't this the same freakin' movie? By the same director? WTH?

Oh wait... Hitchcock did that too with his 1956 remake of his earlier 1934 Man Who Knew Too Much.

Hollywood... so many remakes if you look closely over it's nearly 100 year history (without the rose colored glasses). Far too many to even list properly.

And what's with this Buffy remake thing? What difference is it that Whedon or someone else makes it?
It was already a movie and tv series. Why would Whedon want an older Buffy on screen? Or was it supposed to be a remake younger version? Can't the guy get an original idea instead of regurgitating his earlier works for "continuation" (fan speak calls this "Milking it for all its worth" and "Studio cash-grab" and other colorful euphemisms) or "updating" (fan speak calls this "Raping my childhood memories")?

And I keep hearing things like brought up like a Giles spin off, or a Spike spin off or a Faith spin off or a Willow spin off. Ugh. Can't anyone have some originality? We've seen these characters already; for years. Get a creative bone already.

Oh wait, that's what fans want isn't it?
Remakes, re-dos and re-runs.
Throw a DVD in the player willya?
Time to watch this for the upteenth time.

Buffy film?Sounds like extracting more milk from a long dead cow.
I love old films, and must confess have a vast collection on video(Before those new fangled vdd's came along),and
especially like old horror/science fiction matinee's,and hate,no
detest it when they destroy them with garb like"The fly"with
jeff goldblum. Not a patch on the original thanks.
Then next in the bilepit of remakes is the avengers.
Uma thurman as emma peel, huh, thats laughable, but more
laughable than that is who played steed.
I could go on and on about "The house on haunted hill, and
lost in space, but i'll spare you all that.

This thread is still going I see, anyways my stance has not changed.

Concerning EB -- I know movie was before and I also saw it before. However, it still does not change my perception it would be using the series fame for it instead of movie itself. Also, i am no particular fan of Wheldon. It is just in my view it is taking advantage of series fame combined with success of twilight and it probably is reboot instead of continuation because they do not have rights to those characters.

It does not mean it would fail or I would not watch it, I am just bit annoyed over it.

I don't see the point in making another Buffy film. And without Joss and all the cast it just wouldn't be the same. I might watch it when it comes out though, just so I can properly cast my opinion. Sigh.

I don't see the point in making another Buffy film.

For the filmmakers the point will be to make money and since vampires now are in they hope this will bring them loads. They won't care if anyone else see the point of it. I don't see the point of a lot of tv-shows but they're still being made. 😛
