The actor Anton Yelchin, primarily known for his role as Chekov in the Star Trek reboot has died, age 27.

Star Trek's Anton Yelchin dead at 27 after being run over by his car

He appears to have been hit by his own car and pinned between the car and his mailbox. 😱 Such a tragedy. I enjoyed quite a few of his movies and he seemed to have a promising career.

RIP Anton.
 
Oh my word! I really liked him. Odd Thomas, Fright Night, Charlie Bartlett, Wow. How tragic.
 
Was just reading about this. It seems like a terrible accident, his drive was sloped and it seems like the car just slid backwards. Only 27 years old. Very sad.
 
I was going through the cast list of Only Lovers Left Alive on IMDB earlier today, and I forgot he was in that movie. I thought he was good in the Fright Night remake too and was one of the highlights in Terminator Salvation. It does just sound like a terrible, unfortunate accident. It's so sad.

I just watched Fright Night again last week. Glad I did it then and not now.
Oh no! This is terrible! I really liked Anton Yelchin! Ever since Alpha Dog. I even liked him in Burying the Ex. I thought he was a bit older, he's too young to have died. This is so sad, and what a terrible way to die. I'm kind of sad now about the new Star Trek movie, knowing this is his last time as Chekov. 🙁

Yeah, I forgot he was the little kid in Alpha Dog. There were just so many stars in that movie.

It's not a good movie, but it is enjoyable.

I would imagine they will. They kinda have to. I just wonder about recasting and how odd that will be.
 
Well, they've not announced any follow up to Beyond; they may just stick with a trilogy (though if the movie does well and people are contracted, this is unlikely). I think if they did another, they would explain Chekov's absence in some way, rather than re-cast the role as a mark of respect....

But this is Hollywood, so who knows....

Do you think going forward they will recast Chekov or just create a new character to do his job? I fine with it either way.

I can't imagine they would create a new character. I mean, Chekov is part of Star Trek. I think they have to recast for fear of alienating even more of the Star Trek fans.
 
I can understand them recasting a character like Albus Dumbledore.... they had to. Richard Harris only starred in the first two movies before he died, and he was a main character, integral to the plot. Chekov is part of Star Trek, but he's no Kirk or Spock, strictly speaking they could get away with not having the character in the next movie, if there is one, by explaining his absence in some way.

I certainly don't think they'll be making any formal announcements over the future of the role any time soon, out of respect for Anton and his family.

I agree. I think they could get away with not having a Chekov character in the next movie. I'm pretty sure the Star Trek fans would understand. Maybe give the character a break in the next movie before recasting. Or just say the character was reassigned to another ship and bring in a new character. I'm not a huge Star Trek fan, but I really liked Chekov in the movies, so it will be sad to see Yelchin play him for the last time in ST:Beyond.
 
I'd be offended if they, in essence, 'killed off' the character. Chekov remaining and continuing could be a testament to Yelchin and his importance to the movie/role.. it was his last role, it should carry on to help preserve his memory.

He'll obviously be in the soon to be released "Into The Darkness" installment, then, the simplest thing to do would be to just refer to Chekov being on detached duty somewhere (they could even probably reedit some stock footage that they have, showing him leave) in the next movie, then recast for the 5th in the reboot series, assuming that there will be one. With that long a time gap, the change in actors won't be all that noticeable.
 
It's really tragic, I was always big into star trek and Chekov has always been my favorite character TOS and movie verse. I was involved in the LJ community and why I wasn't as big of a fan of some people, it still hit me really hard. He was really young and had a great career ahead of him.
 
What a freak accident! Poor guy 🙁 I thought he was older as well - another 27 club member?
 
Oh that's so sad, I just watched him in Only Lovers Left Alive the other day. For me he was always Nathan Harris from a favorite episode of Criminal Minds. Great actor even when he was that young (that part must've been ten years ago by now). Very tragic accident. 🙁
 
Oh wow this is horrific. 🙁 Not being a Star Trek fan I'd only ever seen him in Terminator Salvation.
