Any confirmation on how to say Melaka?

So, I just watched the second motion comic of Time of Your Life. In the episode they refer to her as Melaka, pronounced Ma-lah-ka. I've been calling her Melaka, pronounced Mel-ee-ka, since...pretty much Joss created her. I could have sworn my way was the correct way. The motion comics have already had mishaps like callying the scythe a sith. So, is there any confirmation anywhere of how to say her name? Like is there an interview or something on youtube where he clearly says it?

I called her Meleka for the longest time, too! mostly because I kept reading "Melaka" as "Meleka" xD
I play for a Greek soccer team and I'm sure I've heard the boys say something very similar which means something really rude. Interesting. Sorry, that was a bit unhelpful wasn't it?!

Yeah I thought it was a reference to the Greek cuss word too. I laughed hysterically because I know what it means and I felt proud of my Greek heritage. *sigh* Oh to be Greek.

BTW in Greek the term is pronounced "Mah-la-ka."

Are you guys saying "la" like "lay" or "lah"? I always read it like "me-lay-ka", but I have no idea if I'm right!
 
I've always thought of it as Meh-lakka. Though I'm sure none of the above are wrong. Or right, for that matter 😉

In "Fray" there's a scene where Gunther (the fishy crime lord) says her name and it's spelled out phonetically: "Me-LAH-ka."

I stand corrected.
I'll have to double-check in the book when I get home, but I believe the first syllable should be pronounced "meh" rather than "mee," and the stress should be on the second syllable. (Though personally I think it would flow better with the stress on the first syllable, like MEL-uh-kuh... especially since she's called Mel for short.)

The scene where they are in the bar...the lines go like this:

Dino: Hello, pretty lady. Tell me something, what's a beautiful braud like you doing with a malaka like this, huh?
Lisa: It's purely sexual.
Dino: No shit.
Gary: She's into malakas, Dino.

They pronounce it Mah-Lah-Kah
 
OK...but the question was about pronunciation not spelling.

With the new spelling it would pretty clearly be pronounced Meh-Lah-Kah with the emphasis on either the first or second.

Yes, but Malaka is a different name. The question is about how to pronounce Melaka. That was my point.
 
I'm sensing a little tension here so I'll go ahead and concede that you are obviously a better speller than I am...well done!

My point was in regards to the question asked.
 
I looked on youtube for a video where he mentions, but haven't found anything. Is Fray like the bastard child of Joss Whedon? lol

In Fray, when Mel first goes to see Gunther, he says to her:
"Melahhhka! I gave you three ssssil for the amulet and you want more?"

And again in "Time of Your Life" when she takes Buffy to see him, he says:
"Melaaahhhka... you brought a friend."
